Avril Lavigne: classic black

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Once the territory of only the most hardcore punks, black nails became very mainstream for a few years. The trend is now receding, but you'll continue to see it on skater chicks like Avril Lavigne. If you love the classic, serious look, then black is your color of choice, skip the glitter and funny tips. You can find black nail polish almost anywhere these days, but for on-the-run rockers the Sally Hansen quick dry nail pen in black is convenient and inexpensive. Perfect for the low tech punk aesthetic.

Beauty for dummies. And smarties.

We're getting addicted to the Stylelist how-to slide shows. Today our sister site is showcasing a slew of easy to use make-up items and there are a couple of killer finds in there.

At first we felt a little, well, superior. After all, we have mad make-up skillz, earned through years of clown faced experiments. And the first item in the gallery was that Sally Hansen nail pen we posted about a month ago. Um, yawn.

But then we were very pleasantly surprised by the rest of the products. Not just easy to use, they are also cool!

Sally Hansen nailpolish pen: Safety first

I like to be prepared, so I carry a lot of random stuff in my bag. But nail polish? That's an unfixable accident waiting to happen. If you think it's hard to scrape rogue Junior Mints off credit cards, imagine the mess lurking in a bottle of Chanel Midnight Red.

What's a mobile, well-manicured-wanabee to do?

Sally Hansen Color Quick Fast Dry Nail Color
to the rescue! This cool pen comes in eight colors, including a surprisingly au courant dark blue. It has a screw tight cap that even most paranoid gal -- or dude -- can feel safe stashing next to a cell phone.

It's easy to use. And quick drying like the name says. On the down side, the brush is brutishly thick and ungainly. But hey, this is for touch ups and last minute pedis in the car, not to paint daisies on your thumbnail, right?

Pick it up at Walgreens for the bargain price of $7.99.

Beauty products that they DON'T recommend

Filed under: Hair Care, Cosmetics, Skin Care

bad beauty productsMost of the time, we find ourselves asking one another what we use for wash our faces, moisturize, get ride of zits, erase fine lines. Very rarely do we ask the opposite question, "What do you not use?" Why would we? We don't need to know about something we'd never buy and try. Still, TotalBeauty put together a list of the 12 beauty products that earned the lowest ratings from their editors. I guess the best way to use this information is to watch out:
