Frederic Fekkai Salon Glaze Clear Shine Rinse: yay or nay?

Filed under: Hair Care, Product Reviews

I'm not the biggest beauty junkie, but I do like trying out products when all the magazines are touting them as the next miracle creation. Most of the time, I'm less than impressed, but when I do find a new addition to my makeup bag or medicine cabinet, it's so worth it. (I will never regret the $17 I spent on my Shu Uemura eyelash curler.)

So I decided to give Frederic Fekkai's Salon Glaze Clear Shine Rinse ($28) a whirl after reading about it seemingly everywhere this month. The silicone-based treatment promises it "binds shine, recharges color, and adds silkiness to the hair." Kind of like a DIY glossing treatment--which was just what my blonde highlights needed after a long summer.

Eyebrow expert Kristie Streicher's grooming dos and don'ts

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day, Get the Look, Beauty Tips

I've always plucked my own eyebrows, but a few months back, I realized they were looking a little sparse. (Okay, I had accidentally tweezed them into oblivion.) So when I was given a gift certificate to the Warren|Tricomi salon in my Los Angeles neighberhood, I decided to make an appointment for an eyebrow shaping and tinting with Kristie Streicher and see if she could help.

Kristie--who herself looks like she belongs walking the red carpet--has worked with celebrities from Julia Roberts to Molly Sims in her ten years as an eyebrow specialist. Still, I was surprised by just how polished I looked after she tinted, tweezed and trimmed my brows. Now, I'm happy to say my eyebrows are no longer in critical condition. In fact, they're pretty much perfect.

We gave you the step-by-step on the perfect pluck a while back, and now Kristie has been kind enough to exclusively share her list of expert eyebrow-grooming dos and don'ts with the Stylelist crowd.

Mani-pedis cost even more than you thought

In a report released last week, the YWCA said that women and girls are way too worried about being beautiful. For example, more than 80 percent of the women polled said they were unhappy with their appearance. And our obsession with looking good isn't only costing us our happiness–it's costing us money.

Among the make-you-think statistics the report included was this tidbit: if women put the average $50 that monthly manicures and pedicures cost into a retirement account once a year, they'd save almost $10,000 in a decade. Shocking number, yes. (Personally, I'd rather give up my three-day-a-week Starbucks habit, though. It would save me about the same amount). I'm curious: which $50-a-month beauty fix could you go without for ten years...if the reward was ten grand?

Go longer between highlights with this

Filed under: Hair Care, Steals and Deals

I'll be honest with you -- I have seriously botched my hair color with at-home products. I've turned it green and I've turned it brassy gold, and I've definitely learned that hair color is something to leave to the pros. Most of the time.

With summer coming up, many of you will be heading to the salon to get some highlights, and chances are it won't be cheap. Personally, I love the look of subtle highlights, but I'm not into roots, and I hate having to spend $140 every six weeks. And so, I've found a great solution -- Clairol Natural Instincts semi-permanent hair color.

Natural Instincts has loads of shades and it's easy to find the right one for you -- their Find Your Shade function is excellent. It actually gave me the exact three colors I switch between (Amber Shimmer, Toasted Almond, and Navajo Bronze, depending on time of year and how light my highlights are). What makes this product even better is that it smells great, cleans up easily, only takes 10 minutes, and leaves my hair feeling really soft.

Of course, if you're preparing for an event and your hair has to be just right, see a professional or at least try the product out months beforehand to make sure you'll get the result you want. In my experience, though, Natural Instincts is a huge time saver, and, at under $10 a box, it's a big money saver, too!

Do you have an trick to extend time between visits to the salon? Do tell!

Fashion disaster: Woman leaves stylist with chemical burns on her scalp

So here we are, on the brink of a brand new year -- what better time to try a new look? That's what Kareim Ugarte was thinking when she stopped into her local salon, and asked to have her hair color changed from brown to blond.

Only that's not what happened. Instead of the blond locks she was after, Ugarte wound up looking like a junior high kid with a bad bleach job, complete with an orange and yellow coiffure. Oh, the humanity! But what's worse, way worse, is that she also wound up in the emergency room -- with chemical burns.

Ugarte told a local reporter that "It was with blisters and a lot of liquid coming out of the areas," which probably looked about as gross as it sounds.

The culprit was a JC Penney's Styling Salon -- who not only injured their customer (allegedly), but then charged her $150.

I smell a lawsuit.

Foxy Brown's beauty shop catfight

Filed under: Style in the News, Hair Care, Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Did you know that rapper Foxy Brown has a history of beauty shop assault?

It's true. The first incident of her salon-related crime took place in October when Brown attacked two staff members in a Bloomingdales' nail salon.

As the saying goes, if one time is a fluke, then two times is a pattern. And following a recent incident in Florida, Foxy has gone from a woman with an anger problem to a repeat offender.

Brown was allegedly applying hair products to her coiffure when a store employee told her it was closing time and that she would have to leave. Not one to take directions from a lowly shop boy, Foxy reportedly threw glue at the employee and then spat on him.

When the police arrived, Foxy Brown allegedly resisted arrest and forced an officer to apply a "take-down maneuver". The rapper later spent the night in jail for charges of assault and battery and obstruction of justice. Eventually, Brown was released on a $1500 bail.

I hope that any salon employees out there will take note of this warning -- if you see Foxy Brown in your store, leave her alone.
