Lookbook.nu gives stylemakers a fashion diary

While we do love million-dollar fashion spreads in magazines, they're rarely as inspiring as shots of street style. (Without the benefit of A-list photographers, fussed-over lighting and a team of professional stylists, plenty of people dress quite well in day-to-day life, thank you.)

Lookbook.nu offers an ode to just those individuals. The online style diary, where members (like Lina, pictured above) upload their DIY fashion pics, recalls a cheekier, younger version of The Sartorialist. Populated by self-described artists, students, lovers and nobodies, Lookbook's San Franciscan founders call it a "social experiment in style." (We call it completely addicting to browse.)

With trendsetters from Estonia, Berlin, the Philippines, and Stockholm--among others--featured, you might even learn something about geography while you're at it.

The return of The Sartorialist

Filed under: Style in the News, Men

Style impresario Scott Schuman (also known as The Sartorialist) is back.

The blogger will be doing what he does best during New York Fashion Week: snapping a select few on-the-street looks that catch his eye.

With his penchant for relaxed but sophisticated style, Schuman's photographs are just as inspiring as anything that comes down the runway. (And they always leave us wishing we could pull off the effortless chic of his Parisian subjects.)

Check out his latest picks here. Just don't blame us if you're struck with the sudden urge to buy an all-new wardrobe.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art's street style exhibition

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Style in the News

In 1973, the LACMA unveiled "LA Flash." The exhibition featured photographs of 400 of the city's most stylish residents, collected by a handful of shutterbugs who wandered different neighborhoods, capturing the best of L.A. street style. Now, on its 25th anniversary, the museum will re-launch "LA Flash," which originally ran for three months, for one night only. The photos, according to The Los Angeles Times, are still a fashion inspiration: "Many of the original images, which have been digitally enhanced for the new showing, could have sprung from the latest issue of Vogue."

There's no doubt that "LA Flash" was a precursor to the ubiquitous girl-on-the-street magazine pages and blog features we see today. With that in mind, the museum will offer a modern spin on the idea by starting a new, street-style blog to celebrate its anniversary.

Loving the Sartorialist in Paris

We are obsessed with the Sartorialist! His take on fashion is unique, his photographs are exquisite, and the discussion amongst the fashion minded on his blog is fascinating. And we are especially fans of some of the pictures he took while in the fashion capital of the world. Because we all know, nobody does Springtime like they do in gay Paris.

On the scene: $91,000 for a naked French lady

Filed under: Style in the News

We have no idea why anyone would pay $91,000 just to see Nicolas Sarkozy's supermodel wife posing sans clothing, but that's what some Chinese guy paid to own a photo of her in the buff. Oh yeah, it's art. Sure dude. [Guardian]

Argh! What the hell is that mustache doing invading William H. Macy's face? [She Knows Best]

Donatella Versace and her big, fat, important lips got invited to the White House Correspondents Dinner. [Jezebel]

How to really dress up

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing

Every year in New York there's an Easter Parade in celebration of our favorite candy-laced holiday, and it draws some impressively-adorned citizens -- decked out their high-class threads. Not surprisingly, my favorite street fashion photographer, the Sartorialist -- who I've mentioned maybe 8 million times before -- was on the scene, snapping photos of the well-dressed amongst the crowds.

These two shots should be in the dictionary next to "Style badass." Bowler hats, wing tips, canes, white gloves -- need I say more? I feel like I'm looking at a scene straight out of The Great Gatsby.

It's one thing to look nice. It's one thing to wear a costume. But to do both so shockingly well is a skill worth noting.

What a fun Easter tradition!

The Sartorialist looks at kids

Filed under: Style in the News, Kids and Babies

sartorialist kidsOne of the more popular fashion and style blogs out there is The Sartorialist, based in New York. The Sartorialist is known for snapping photos of people in their natural, fashionist states, on the street. A few days ago, The Sartorialist posted that he will be contributing to Cookie, the InStyle/Lucky-style magazine for kids and babies. His contributions will be called "Sartorialist, Jr." with the same sort of "street-style" capture, but instead of regular-sized people, his subjects will be of the smaller set.

From BloggingBaby, we get this random side note: "if you'll read the post, you'll find that The Sartorialist used to be a stay-at-home dad." Now who knew a stay-at-home Dad could have such an eye for style?

Street fashion photographer nearly arrested!

The last two years have seen a seemingly endless stream of new street fashion blogs 'round the interweb. By far the most respectable one of the bunch is The Sartorialist, based in NYC. He was already a runway fashion photog before he started snapping photos of "inspiring" looks on the streets of New York, Paris, London, or wherever else he happens to go for work, and it shows -- the man has a great eye.

Recently, The Sartorialist was in Antwerp, where he was almost arrested! It's not like he was covertly snapping photos of Belgium's secretly documents (or whatever) -- but merely crossing the street. Used to the pedestrian free-for-all of NYC, The Sartorialist crossed the street against a "No Walk" sign, which led to an on-the-street interrogation by local authorities, demands for his passport, and a policeman who was "so mad he was shaking."

Whoa. Note to fashion photogs -- keep your eyes peeled in Belgium. They're gunnin' for ya.
