Dress of the day - Buttercup by Simple Silhouettes

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

Sometimes a well-constructed but "simple" dress is all you need to glam it up. This design by Simple Silhouettes in cement grey satin is a timeless piece that you can make your own with a few accessories. Pair it with glittering jewelry - like a tennis bracelet and diamond studs - for an upscale look; or add pearls and a cardigan if you're looking for something more preppy. An interesting brooch or tying a scarf at the waist would dramatically alter the look - the possibilities are endless! Every closet needs a piece like this - and it doesn't have to be black to be versatile.

Dress of the day - Carmen Marc Valvo red sateen belted dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

Cocktail party season will soon be upon us (and just between us, we can't wait!) so it pays to make like a Boy Scout and start your shopping now. Of course, it's not like this is such a terrible chore - especially with the abundance of sophisticated retro-inspired pieces in the market right now - like this seductive red-satin number by Carmen Marc Valvo. It's something we could imagine Joan Holloway wearing to the annual office party, which makes it a winner in our book.

Tip of the day: Neiman Marcus' magnificent seven

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Though we love to scout the runways for trends on our own, we were totally inspired by Neiman Marcus' "Fall's Magnificent Seven" ad campaigns that have been flooding our inbox all week.

Shoes of the day - Loupe by Kate Spade

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

Oooh, these sandals are the perfect party shoe! Can't you just imagine dancing away while perched atop these delicate gold-toned heels? We can! And we love them in pink because it brings out the softness of the fabric - they look deceptively comfortable, but are definitely meant for dress-up nights.

You'd wear these at a formal event, of course - but we think these would also look amazing peeking from underneath black pants or dark wash jeans when paired with a dressy top.

(They also come in black, if pink isn't your thing.)

Cool secret: Scunci plastic headbands

Our cross to bear is a tiny, pointy head. No amount of crying or squeezing or adjusting will make most of those cool $50 headbands, in tortoiseshell and grosgrain and satin sit right on our small noggin.

You'd think those neat-o, sporty, elastic headbands, the kind that are all narrow and stretchy would be the solution, but those slide off in a matter of seconds. Little barrettes and bobby pins have been our only bangs control options for years.

So, we were beyond thrilled to find, in the hair accessory aisle of our local Walgreen's, something that fit: Scunci plastic headbands.

Dress of the Day: Derek Lam Satin Smock Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

derek lam satin smock dress, redI know that after Valentine's Day, the last thing you want to see is another red dress, but I couldn't resist this gorgeous thing.

The Satin Smock Dress from Derek Lam is a made of red hammered satin (it also comes in black). The tunic style with pintuck detail at the bust makes it easy to wear and totally forgiving for all figures. Three-quarter length sleeves are functional -- they stay out of your way if you're working away at your desk (dress down by wearing it over a pair of leggings), or having lunch with a girlfriend (dress up with patent peep-toe shoes and clutch).

The dress is $1,090, available at net-a-porter.

Shoes of the Day: Giuseppe Zanotti Rose Bud Satin Mules

giuseppe zanotti rose bud satin mules
If this pair of shoes weren't made for all the holidays and events in February, I don't what is. Party into the night for Mardi Gras? Romantic dinner out on Valentine's Day? Okay, so maybe the red and bright fuschia color combination isn't right for the Super Bowl (both the Giants and Patriots are shades of blue and red).

Giuseppe Zanotti's Rose Bud Satin Mules have a fuschia satin upper and a matching color patent leather heel that stands at 4". Of course, the best part of the shoe is the enormous red satin rose. These are a great pair of sandals to "wow!" with a simple back dress, or add to an already colorful dress.

Available from Intermix for $595.

Shoes of the Day: Giuseppe Zanotti Black Satin Platfrom Pumps

giuseppe zanotti black satin platform pumpThe perfect party shoe to ring in 2008 is the one that you can wear around the house as you entertain your guests, and wear downtown when you make a short appearance at the black-tie ball, and hold up the rest of the night as you dance into the morning at the club.

Giuseppe Zanotti's Black Satin Platform Pump is just that one. A sweet, rounded peep-toe lets it work the living room at your home cocktail party, the sparkling crystal brooch dresses is up for the black-tie affair, and the 4¼" heel is slightly offset with a ½" platform in the front so it won't be backbreaking when you're letting loose on the dancefloor just past midnight and beyond.

Available from Bluefly for $500..

Dress of the Day: Vivienne Tam Kimono Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

vivienne tam kimono dressI have to admit, I have been a little unfair in my daily pick of a dress. I have knowingly excluded a certain type of dress, and not just once. I'm not exactly sure what it is about the dress or why I am so exclusive, since I have never even worn one.

But today is the day I let the Kimono Dress into the club. I still won't wear one, but that shouldn't stop anyone else from slipping into the 100% silk brown and tan floral print kimono dress by Vivienne Tam. I think I am okay with this dress because the print is far more subtle than the bright red and pink cherry blossom prints I'm used to seeing. The dress features solid black satin trim on the short sleeves, empire waist, and the deep V-neckline. Perfect for matching black shoes -- I am thinking you should definitely stay away from white tube socks and flipflops on this one.

The Kimono print dress is on sale at Neiman Marcus for $244.
