Is watching Project Runway a family affair at your household like it is around ours? (Okay, around here family means a boyfriend and a dog, but still...) If so, and you just happen to have some budding young designers in your brood, then these Project Runway playsets will be right up your alley!

Look for Less: Ruffle Vest from New York Fashion Week

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Videos, Fashion Week

So you've always wanted to wear the hottest runway looks but don't want to break the bank to do so? Maybe you've got the itch to just do it yourself? Well, my awesome friends over at Threadbanger are here to help you out. Their weekly video podcast is full of great tips and tutorials on DIY fashion, as well as the scoop on plenty of underground independent designers.

In the most recent episode, they travel to New York Fashion Week and chat with Malan Breton of Project Runway season 3 fame, check out a fashion show by punk rock indie design house New York Couture, and finally give you a video tutorial on how to make a fabulous ruffle collar, based on one seen in James Coviello's Fall 2008 collection. There's also a tutorial on their blog, if you're not into video. It's a really simple sewing project, and the result is amazing! Who said you need to spend thousands of dollars to get an fresh-from-the-runway look?

Built By Wendy is built by you

Built by Wendy's Built by You sewing patternsBuilt by Wendy is a line of fun, whimsical and very unique clothing for men, women and children. For example. I just saw a dress in her online store featuring giant penguins around the hemline of a shiny dress. The creativity behind the designs come from Wendy Mullin, who learned to sew at a very young age while growing up ip Chicago. She now designs and runs her own stores in New York (2) and Los Angeles (1).

If Wendy's designs inspire you, now you can make them yourself. The designer has teamed up with Simplicity and is offering some of her patterns so that Built by Wendy is Built by You! I am particularly fond of the coat and jacket, and though I am not in love with the fabrics that are shown, the patterns are a great place to start for great lines and shapes. Once I dust off my old Singer, I just might have a new winter jacket!

Built by You patterns are available from the Built by Wendy website and run around $15 each.
