Sheer Stuff Turns Us On - Tip of the Day!

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Demi Moore, Ashton KutcherThe spring 2009 runways schooled us on just how seductive sheer can be. If done correctly, it perfectly channels a subtle sex appeal that is as mysterious as it is romantic. If done incorrectly, it looks like, well, Gerri Halliwell mooning a room full of children (had to!). Here are a few tips to ensure you don't pull a "Gerri" and some celeb inspiration for all ages.

Helen Mirren: sheer matching magic

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

With Helen Mirren, it's all about nuances. Here she matches her nails to her dress, but in a way that says "pulled together" instead of "matchy-matchy." Her secret? The color is in the same family as her dress, but it's a lighter shade, a small but important distinction. Also the sheerness keeps it from being to heavy. If you're all about the subtle details, like Helen, then Essie Sheers are your nails' best friends.

Wimbledon is fashion central, at least for tennis

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Maria promised to change up her Wimbledon outfit, and and she came through. Her "menswear-inspired" Nike outfit is a decidedly sexy, sheer top with a tudexo "dickie" embellishing the front. With the matching white jacket and white shorts, she could as easily be on her way to lunch as to a championship match.

Players frequently blend in at Wimbledon, where everyone is required to wear white from head to toe. A few, like Sharapova, manage to stand out despite this restriction.

Five-time champion Roger Federer, also sponsored by Nike, does it with a surprise look each year. Others, like Rafa Nadal and his manpris, have their own unique and consistent look that they bring to every match. Not to mention regular fashion notables Serena and Venus Williams, who are almost as well known for their fashion off the court as they are for winning on the court.

Stila review: long wear lip color

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

Our second Stila product for review was Long Wear Lip Color. We've admitted before that we're lazy about reapplying lip color, so we were excited to try one that purported to be a soft-on-the lips hybrid gloss, with serious staying power.

We rotated the three colors over the course of a week:
  • Serenade -- golden red (weekend brunch color)
  • Coquette -- pink mauve (tasteful day wear)
  • Rendezvous -- brown reddish (dramatic night out)

5 fashion trends for 2008 as picked by Fortune

Now that 2007 is quickly coming to an end, it's time to cast your eyes on 2008 -- after all, you don't want to suddenly find yourself stuck with a closet full of last year's looks!

According to Fortune magazine, there are five big trends to keep your eye on next year. I wouldn't normally turn to Fortune for my fashion advice -- it's a financial publication, after all -- but their picks makes sense. Grown-up, sophisticated, and right where mainstream style has been headed ever since we dumped that 80s resurgence once and for all.

Here's what you'll need in the New Year:

Dress of the Day: Rory Beca Lupe Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

rory beca tunic dressWe're barely through Fall and we're already tired of cashmere sweater dresses.

Okay, that's not true, but there are only so many sweater dresses a girl could have before she feels a little stuffy.

Rory Beca's Lupe Tunic Dress is just the break we need (for now). The very short minidress (that can be worn for what it is -- a tunic -- over jeans or leggings) is 100% silk that's sheer on the three-quarter length sleeves. The dress shown is fuschia on gray, but also comes in a black/gray print, as well as a gorgeous orange on navy.

Available from Revolve Clothing for $297.
