Dress of the Day: Lacoste Gab Shirt Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

lacsote shirtdressI'm just way too lazy to have to think about putting entire outfits together, so Spring's dress trend couldn't be any more perfect for little ol' me. Of course, there is the issue of shoes, but we'll save that problem for another day.

I am absolutely wild about Lacoste's Gab Shirt Dress in color cream. It's so perfectly casual for the right kind of California casual office, or for running out to meet The Girls for lunch and shopping. Like a traditional shirt dress, it has a button placket, but this dress has the ease and comfort of a dropped wait (we did say "lunch" right?), as well as the convenience of pockets at the hip. Keep it casual with a pair of tennis shoes if you'd like, but I think this dress absolutely calls for a pair of platform wedge espadrilles.

Available at Urban Outfitters for $155.

Dress of the Day: J. Crew Black Ruffle Shirt Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

j crew black ruffle shirt dressIf you've been anywhere near a clothing store in the last few weeks, you know that pretty little Spring fling things are hitting the shelves. However, the weather, even here in LA, is most definitely not appropriate for a bright yellow sundress (and if you ask me, no weather is appropriate for a bright yellow dress). We've got at least a month of wintry weather, and sweater weather beyond that.

I'm tempted, y'all, to start shopping the resort lines, but I'll resist. I suppose it isn't that difficult if the dress is a silk twill pullover shirtdress with button-front closure and ruffle embellishments at the collar and cuffs from J. Crew. I never thought that they'd actually start using the term, but this dress does indeed have "bracelet sleeves," and falls to a just past modest midthigh. This is part of their Spring collection (the dress is unlined), but with a slip underneath and a jacket on top, it can pass for January.

The dress is $175.

Dress of the Day: Mossimo Tunic Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

mossimo tunic shirtdressIt's back to work, Boss Lady.

Of course, we're also counting down to the Holidays, which means work and life are hectic and you certainly have the freedom to be a little more comfortably casual in the office (at least, that's what I'm doing until I get an email from HR).

The Tunic Shirtdress by Mossimo from Target is probably a little bit too short at mid-thigh to wear by itself, but over a pair of thick leggings, it's perfect. If your office is casual enough, you could even do it over a nice pair of "work jeans." The dress is made of 100% cotton poplin, has a loose fit, and and the 3/4-length sleeves are perfect to give you the agility at your laptop. (I hate sleeves that get in my way when I'm working.)

The dress is only $15.99 at Target and also comes in Caffe Latte, Blue, and Black.

Dress of the Day: Colette Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

eva franco colette shirtdressOh, you want to stay curled up in bed this morning because not only is the air a little chillier than usual, but you have the beginnings of a mild hangover. Shake it off! Have you forgotten you've got a Sunday brunch date?!?! Designer jeans tucked into knee-high boots and a leather bomber jacket would be okay if you were meeting up with your boyfriend, but this is a date with your boyfriend's parents. Yikes. This orange plaid knit shirtdress from Eva Franco is perfect because it shows you have more imagination than a boring black dress, and though it's orange, both "plaid" and "shirtdress" say "nice and conservative."

The Colette dress is $425, but $255 at Bluefly.

Dress of the Day: Free People Dotted Mesh Empire Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

free people dotted mesh empire dressI guess when I get something stuck in my head, it's stuck in my head. Yesterday, it was the ABS Vintage Lace Shirt Dress, and today, I'm still loving the look of sheer black with this dress from Free People. In fact, this dress is like the shorter, sassier version of yesterday's dress. The dress is a babydoll because it has that high empire waist, but doesn't get too cute-sy with too much pouffiness of ruffles. In fact, though the dress is fairly short, it keeps it real with a tab collar and button placket. Unfortunately, the dress is not sold with a slip, so you'll have to find your own.

The Free People Dotted Mesh Umpire Dress is $88 at Urban Outiftters.

Dress of the Day: Halogen Mandarin Collar Shirt Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

halogen mandarin collar shirtdressIf last week was the week of the turtleneck sweater dresses, then this week is unfolding into the week of belted shirtdresses.

This shirtdress by Halogen is made of a woven blend of rayon and cotton and comes in both black and tamarind (which is a dark purplish brown). The dress buttons up the front, has chest pockets, and rolled short sleeves with a button detail, but the highlight of the dress is the little Mandarin collar. It comes with a matching belt in the same color, but I'd throw that little tie on the closet floor and go for a belt with a buckle that matches my shoes.

The dress is $98 at Nordstrom.

Dress of the Day: Morphine Generation Black Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Fashion Week, Must Haves

morphine generation black shirtdressI swear I have no connection with Morphine Generation whatsoever, but as I was browsing their site after seeing the Spring 2007 Collection, I fell in love with this 100% cotton black button front shirt dress from the Fall 2006 collection.

First of all, I pretty much have no will power when it comes to shirtdresses. Secondly, I just love the almost military look of the dress with the tab epaulets, the gold-embroidered crest over the heart, belt, and distressed back seams. Best of all, the dress has pockets. Pockets! I am loving dresses with pockets this season.

The dress is $209 at Revolve Clothing.

Dress of the Day: J. Crew Corduroy Shirtdress

j. crew corduroy shirt dressRemember when you had corduroy pants in every color? To match every color of rugby shirt you had from J. Crew? Ok, so maybe that was just me, back in my prep-ster days in high school. But I never wore corduroy in a dress because it only ever reminded me of...jumpers. I'm sorry, but I have yet to embrace the jumper. But until the day that jumper does not equal "Osh Kosh B'gosh" for me, I can only do corduroy in a shirt dress, like this one from J. Crew that comes in a deep espresso color.

The dress is cotton, with a fitted bodice that buttons up the front and has a full skirt. I like the way it is paired with boots, but I'd love it more if the boots were a little lower -- to show some knee. Regardless, the dress will be cute no matter what shoes you wear.

Dress of the Day: AKA New York Shirt Dress

aka new york shirt dressCan you tell I have a momentary obsession with shirt dresses? Perhaps it is the fact that they are roomy and comfortable. Perhaps it is the fact that there is something hot and mysterious about a woman's figure underneath an oversized, boxy menswear shirt.

Whatever the reason, my fascination plays out again here with this bright sapphire silk/stretch shirt dress by AKA New York. This dress in particular really looks like a shirt dress because of its sleeves with cuffs and the classic shirt hemline with 6 " vents. The dress is meant to be belted and comes with its own sash to tie, but to really play up the "meanswear" look about this dress, you could grab a matching tie from your man's closet and tie it around your waist!

The dress is $335 at girlshop, and also comes in a moss green color.
