Nicole Kidman at the Paris 'Australia' Premiere - From Red Carpet to Your Closet

Filed under: Dresses, Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

Nicole Kidman doesn't have to try too hard to look stunning on the red carpet. She's tall, thin, and poised, and that takes care of quite a bit of it. However, when she takes a bit of a chance, as she did here for the Paris premiere of her newest film, "Australia," she makes a major impact.

The Limited now knows no limits

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing

We've been shopping at The Limited for years. They tend to have something for everyone -- from casual to dressy, modest to va-va-voom. However, the only way to purchase their clothes was to go to the store. Seriously -- The Limited didn't have ecommerce available ... until now.

You can now go online and shop to your heart's content. Look for versatile pieces, like this ridiculously cute Ruffle Shirt Dress (wear it now with peep toes, in the winter with boots and a cardigan, and again in the spring with strappy heels). It's just $69.50, so not only will you get plenty of opportunities to wear it, but you'll have money left over to accessorize (and we've got the accessories you need from The Limited in the gallery!)!

Flatter Your Figure - The right shirtdress for your shape

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Flatter Your Figure

Shirtdresses have a lot going for them. They can easily go from one season to the next with a simple change of footwear and possibly the addition of a sweater, and they can be worn casually or glammed up. And, the right shirtdress can be seriously flattering. However, the wrong one? Bad news, darling.

We've got some tips from InStyle on how to rock the shirtdress trend (as well as a few of our own), regardless of your shape. And remember, the key to finding something that flatters your figure is always to try it on -- you'll never be able to tell how it fits from the hanger. Trust us.

Dress of the Day: Samantha Pleet Dandy Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

samantha pleet dandy dressThere's nothing simpler than the shirtdress, and the Samantha Pleet Dandy shirtdress is certainly no exception. The striped cotton that comes in either green or red even comes "accessorized" with a wide sash that ties at the neck. The dress buttons all the way down the front, ends in shirttails, has ¾-length sleeves. If you've been thinking about trying the menswear look this fall, this shirtdress with "necktie" is a good way to ease into it.

Available at Refinery29 for $290.

Styles that Stick: The Shirt Dress

Girl-i-fying menswear trends has long been a style staple. There is something mysterious and sexy about dressing in clothing inspired by the opposite sex. From high-waisted trousers to a simple white button-down, there are plenty of ways to add some "dude" to your closet. There is one menswear style that has a little more femininity infused in it, and that item is the shirt dress.

The shirt dress is always a classic and is an office must have. The simplicity of the design makes it easy to add accessories to change your look to match the fashions of the moment. Take it a very safe place with ballerina flats and an over-sized business tote. Or sex it up by making it look like you just rolled out of bed with a one night stand, threw on some stiletto heels and hurried out the door.

No matter how you decide to wear your shirt dress it will always be in style. The great thing about the shirt dress is that you can get away with purchasing an inexpensive version because we all know how long we can keep white garments clean. The Gap is selling this ruffled shirt dress for a cool $69.50, which also comes in black. For a more classic (non-ruffled) version check out ShopIntuition.com, they have a great one on sale by Steven Alan which comes in a variety of colors.

So take your business casual self to the store and stock up on shirt dresses because this style isn't going anywhere.

Dress of the Day: Lacoste Gab Shirt Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

lacsote shirtdressI'm just way too lazy to have to think about putting entire outfits together, so Spring's dress trend couldn't be any more perfect for little ol' me. Of course, there is the issue of shoes, but we'll save that problem for another day.

I am absolutely wild about Lacoste's Gab Shirt Dress in color cream. It's so perfectly casual for the right kind of California casual office, or for running out to meet The Girls for lunch and shopping. Like a traditional shirt dress, it has a button placket, but this dress has the ease and comfort of a dropped wait (we did say "lunch" right?), as well as the convenience of pockets at the hip. Keep it casual with a pair of tennis shoes if you'd like, but I think this dress absolutely calls for a pair of platform wedge espadrilles.

Available at Urban Outfitters for $155.

Dress of the Day: J. Crew Black Ruffle Shirt Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

j crew black ruffle shirt dressIf you've been anywhere near a clothing store in the last few weeks, you know that pretty little Spring fling things are hitting the shelves. However, the weather, even here in LA, is most definitely not appropriate for a bright yellow sundress (and if you ask me, no weather is appropriate for a bright yellow dress). We've got at least a month of wintry weather, and sweater weather beyond that.

I'm tempted, y'all, to start shopping the resort lines, but I'll resist. I suppose it isn't that difficult if the dress is a silk twill pullover shirtdress with button-front closure and ruffle embellishments at the collar and cuffs from J. Crew. I never thought that they'd actually start using the term, but this dress does indeed have "bracelet sleeves," and falls to a just past modest midthigh. This is part of their Spring collection (the dress is unlined), but with a slip underneath and a jacket on top, it can pass for January.

The dress is $175.

Dress of the Day: Nanette Lepore Printed Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

nanette lepore shirtdressOh, it's humpday, but since this a short week with only four days, technically, there is no humpday. Thank goodness. Tomorrow, we're already heading into the end of the week.

But until then, we're going to put on the cutest little Printed Shirtdress by Nanette Lepore and bang through the week. Nanette Lepore's Printed Shirtdress is 100% black silk with tiny ivory polka dots. It has a sassy spread collar, buttons up the front in typical shirtdress style, has long sleeves with button cuffs, and a full skirt with front pleats that forgive you for already givign up on your New Year's resolutions.

The dress was originally $320, but thankfully, is part of the sale collection at Neiman Marcus, $160.

Dress of the Day: Colette Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

eva franco colette shirtdressOh, you want to stay curled up in bed this morning because not only is the air a little chillier than usual, but you have the beginnings of a mild hangover. Shake it off! Have you forgotten you've got a Sunday brunch date?!?! Designer jeans tucked into knee-high boots and a leather bomber jacket would be okay if you were meeting up with your boyfriend, but this is a date with your boyfriend's parents. Yikes. This orange plaid knit shirtdress from Eva Franco is perfect because it shows you have more imagination than a boring black dress, and though it's orange, both "plaid" and "shirtdress" say "nice and conservative."

The Colette dress is $425, but $255 at Bluefly.

Dress of the Day: Halogen Mandarin Collar Shirt Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

halogen mandarin collar shirtdressIf last week was the week of the turtleneck sweater dresses, then this week is unfolding into the week of belted shirtdresses.

This shirtdress by Halogen is made of a woven blend of rayon and cotton and comes in both black and tamarind (which is a dark purplish brown). The dress buttons up the front, has chest pockets, and rolled short sleeves with a button detail, but the highlight of the dress is the little Mandarin collar. It comes with a matching belt in the same color, but I'd throw that little tie on the closet floor and go for a belt with a buckle that matches my shoes.

The dress is $98 at Nordstrom.

Dress of the Day: Morphine Generation Black Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Fashion Week, Must Haves

morphine generation black shirtdressI swear I have no connection with Morphine Generation whatsoever, but as I was browsing their site after seeing the Spring 2007 Collection, I fell in love with this 100% cotton black button front shirt dress from the Fall 2006 collection.

First of all, I pretty much have no will power when it comes to shirtdresses. Secondly, I just love the almost military look of the dress with the tab epaulets, the gold-embroidered crest over the heart, belt, and distressed back seams. Best of all, the dress has pockets. Pockets! I am loving dresses with pockets this season.

The dress is $209 at Revolve Clothing.

Truly in love with taffeta

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Ever since I saw Lily Tomlin portray the existential detective Vivian in "I [heart] Huckabees", I've had "a thing" for taffeta shirtdresses. At least "a thing" in theory, because, in practice, smart-looking black taffeta shirtdresses are pretty hard to come outside of New York. However, today as I logged onto Nordstoms.com, what should greet me but the *most* perfect taffeta shirtdress in a truly luxurious black!

Teri Jon's wing-collared shirtdress has a slightly gathered bodice with a full skirt which sweeps just below the knee (the perfect length for a skirt according to Coco Chanel). Fitted at the top and full at the bottom, this shirtdress has so much going for it -- the cut, the color, the fabric, the bow. To be honest, as much as I like this dress and love the idea of wearing it myself, I think it work much better on an older woman. Something tells me that Paris Hilton -- my contemporary -- simply doesn't have the life experience to pull this look off.
