Wal-Mart Worker Killed by Black Friday Shoppers

Filed under: Style in the News

ShoppersToday at Green Acres mall in Nassau County, New York, tragedy struck when a 34 year old Wal-Mart worker was killed by shoppers who physically broke down the doors and rushed the store.

Is it the financial crunch that makes people so excited to shop at Wal-Mart? This is insanity. The man who died was a part-time, temporary worker, just doing his job. Can you believe that shoppers were this voracious?

DesignerLaundry, Part One

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Interviews, Style for a Cause

This is Part One of our interview with Patrick Robertson (CEO), Christina Angelacos (whose role ranges daily from Marketing to Sales to Operations to Customer Care), and Joselle Yokogawa (Fashion Director),
the folks behind DesignerLaundry, a high fashion online boutique that sells designer clothing donated by celebrities, stylists, and others and donates a portion of the proceeds to one of several charities.

Often, people try to see the world in black and white. Either you love fashion and crave designer clothes like Colin Farrell craves a cigarette, or you're more charitably-minded and wouldn't dream of spending that kind of money on clothes when you could be feeding a child or building a home with it.

Celine Dion has an addiction: Can you guess what it is?

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

Celine Dion has a confession to make: She is an addict.

She loves to shop, and, as a result, now owns "between two and three thousand pairs of shoes," and is addicted to shoe shopping. Think about that for a second -- that was her quote. She has so many shoes that she doesn't even know which thousand she's closest to!

Ban T-Shirts with a message

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men

No, I don't want to ban t-shirts with a message, unless it is something I disagree with. Why would I want to read that? Ban T-Shirts is the name of the company and their shirts have some very strong messages, most of which I wouldn't dream of banning.

The shirts are designed with progressive messages that concern the issues of the day: the environment, democracy, freedom, war and peace (not Tolstoy). Most of the designs are printed on organic cotton American Apparel shirts and none are made in sweatshops, although I can't guarantee that sweat was not present at some time during the process.

The company is proud of its righteous attitude and claims to be deconstructing society, shirt by shirt. They also make no apologies about not providing all sides on the issues. They feel that the right is wrong and only make shirts with messages that they believe in. That's called not selling out. Besides, who the hell wants to wear shirts that are anti-environment, freedom and peace? Don't answer that. Ban it.

How do you shop?

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

The Budget Fashionista wants you to take the TBF Annual Shopping Survey. It only take about five minutes (seriously -- I just took it and you didn't even miss me, did you?) and is anonymous, so you can tell them the scariest shopping secret in your whole closet and nobody will know that it's you.

Last year over 2500 folks took the survey, which not only helps TBF in determining certain elements of the site but also lets you see how you compare to other shoppers. The questions range from how often you shop to where you shop, and go on to ask what you think is a reasonable amount (or how much you'd be willing to spend) on certain items.

The results will be posted on The Budget Fashionista so you can see how others answered those same questions. Or, if you have any really interesting answers, leave them in the comments!

This is truly discount code heaven

This is one of those sites that I wish I had discovered earlier, sparing myself hundreds of frustrating hours trying to dig through discount codes in my Inbox. Retail Me Not is an online, user-submitted collection of discount codes for various online stores, from Papa John's to American Eagle to Walgreens. Although the success rate of each code is rarely ever 100%, there's no telling how much you can save if you just give the codes a try. I just tried this out with a test shopping spree on the Victoria's Secret and I could have bought an alarming amount of underwear and lipgloss for next to nothing (by lingerie standards).

This is definitely one of my favorite finds of the year. Also check out another site from the Retail Me Not creators: Bug Me Not. It's a huge collection of usernames and passwords open for public use on websites that usually ask you to register to see certain material (like the New York Times and YouTube).

Virtual shopping for fun and prizes

In the mood for a little virtual shopping? Shop.com has come up with a contest called Cart Me Away that challenges you to virtual shop for a chance at a $1,000 shopping spree. Each day players are given a daily spending amount and have to pick winning combination of products from a list of products that best fit that day's installment to the story. Each day has one right combination of products and players get three chances to make a perfect match. Winners receive instant shopping offers and are entered into a weekly drawing for a $1,000 shopping spree. The game runs from now until May 26, 2007 and each week has a new theme with a different storyline.
