Gossip Girl Doing 80's Spinoff Show

Kelly Rutherford at Gossip GirlNo way! Gossip Girl is doing a spinoff -- based on their two most boring characters -- Rufus Humphrey and Lily van der Woodsen. *Snore. The new show will be going back in time chronicling Lily in her teen years up to the point where she meets and falls in love with Rufus. It's set in Montecito and San Fernando Valley.

Ugly "Wudi" Only Loves (Sponsored By) Dove Products

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

The opening credits for Ugly Wudi

Sure, all shows do some product placement. 30 Rock even makes a big joke of it, building it into the storyline. But Unilever has taken it to a ridiculous level in China. They aren't just doing product placement -- they own a whole show!

Unilever is the parent of Dove products, which were selling poorly in China under the "Campaign for Real Beauty." Rather than try a new campaign, their agency came up with the idea of producing a Chinese version of Ugly Betty -- Ugly "Wudi" -- who becomes beautiful by using Dove products.

(Wait, isn't the point of Ugly Betty about internal beauty?)

Anyway, as the exclusive sponsor, Unilever owns all of the commercials, all of the product placement, and even the script!

The show's star, Lin Wudi, gets gorgeous when, inspired by the ad campaign she is creating for Dove products, starts using them. The marketing team from Unilever managed to get 3,300 seconds of Dove brand into the first season of the show.

So what is this? A season long infomercial? Some kind of hybrid ad-tertainment? Genius marketing? Or an evil melange of all three?

Or is it just the future of ads and network television?

People Tree's ethical runway show

Filed under: Runway Trends, Clothing, Green Fashion

People Tree, a pioneer in the world of eco-conscious fashion, held a swanky runway show in the hip London club Whiskey Mist at Zeta last night, and it wasn't only the clothing that was held to ethical standards. People Tree chose to use models from Quintessentially Models, an agency that "takes an ethically-based approach to model management refusing to represent any 'size zero' models."

Don't think for a second, though, that this was a bunch of chubby hippies looking at tie-dye t-shirts. People Tree's Autumn/Winter 2008 is full of trendy dresses, tops, and capes. Check out the gallery to see a sampling of styles.

Posh to show without a show at New York Fashion Week

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

Victoria Beckham's new dress collection won't be shown on the runway at New York Fashion Week, but that doesn't mean Posh will be a no-show. She's taking a different route -- allowing pre-approved editors and buyers to fondle the frocks "by appointment only over a several day period" during Fashion Week.

Prostitutes in Spain put on fashion show

(Click on the image to see more photos from the show)

Fashion shows are always interesting and cultural experiences -- especially when they're put on by prostitutes. In Spain, where prostitution is not legal, but largely tolerated, the ladies of the night put on a little runway show in order to draw attention to their quest for rights.

Rock the 30 Rock

If your favorite show on TV is MILF Island, then you are in luck. Don't let the fact that the show doesn't actually exist, yet, keep you from showing your support. We understand that there is also talk of a potential, and equally fictional, spin-off.

Tyra continues plans for world domination

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

You've got to hand it to Tyra Banks. The girl rocked the modeling world, jumped into reality television with America's Next Top Model, and has yet to take a break (I mean, she did just rip her pants off on national TV to raise awareness about ... something or other. Maybe herself? She never rests!).

Tyra is launching a new series that hearkens back to her fashion roots, reported to to be a combination of The Devil Wears Prada and The Assistant (does anyone know what The Assistant is? I don't!). The eager contestants will be given the opportunity to take on responsibilities at a fashion magazine, and will be eliminated Apprentice-style.

Could we mix in any other shows or movies? How about we put the contestants on an island with sexy singles and roast the ones who succumb to temptation on a spit for dinner? Has anyone come up with that one yet?

Still, I'm rooting for Tyra. I've got to love girl who doesn't run away from the fact that she's got some more curves than she had a few years ago. I mean, seriously, who can't relate to that? Hey Tyra, maybe that's another show idea -- help a bunch of women accept their weight, and then they could become your army when you finally take over the world!

Fashion Week's soundtrack

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

As Cathy Horyn reports in the New York Times, the MisShapes are absolutely hot right now. So hot, in fact, that they're providing the tunes for the shows and/or afterparties of Calvin Klein, Tory Burch and L.A.M.B. (the inimitable label of Gwen Stefani).

The MisShapes is a trio of DJs: Geordon Nicol, Greg Krelenstein and Leigh Lezark. They've emerged as the musical must-haves of the fashion set, and indeed Ms. Horyn invokes the comparison to Andy Warhol and the Factory. Am I wrong here, or didn't Andy Warhol make the famous remark about having fifteen minutes of fame?

Well, alhough Ms. Horyn's article is titled "Cool, at Least for a Few Minutes," here's hoping the MisShapes will be cool for several hours at a minimum!
