Flatter Your Figure - Sweaters for all shapes

Filed under: Clothing, Flatter Your Figure

red sweaterIn some parts of the country, it's turning pleasantly cool, while in other areas, it's just flat out freezing. And while the cold weather might not bode well for those killer peep toe stilettos (unless you're very, very brave and have an uncanny knack for balancing on icy sidewalks), there is a warm, fuzzy lining -- you get to wear sweaters!

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Kate Winslet is one of our most favorite actresses in the world. (Kate, next time you're in San Francisco, lunch is on us. Seriously -- we'll take you for a lobster club at Neiman Marcus that will change your life!) So we're firmly on her side in the "Vanity Fair Photoshop or not" debate.

Actresses and models use shocking tactic to stay thin

Nicole Richie used to send emails to people saying nobody over 100 pounds would be allowed into her parties -- and there would be scales at the door. Coco Rocha said that designers would tell her, "The look this year is anorexic. We don't want you to be anorexic, we just want you to look it." And just recently, sources reported that the CW network sent out a memo saying that the girls on the new 90210 need to stay under 110 pounds. So, the girls of Hollywood have had to come up with a new method to stay on top of this sick trend.

London ditches initiative to ban 'size zero' models

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Vintage and Retro

Despite the fact that men prefer size 10, the idea that skinny models = tons of women with body image issues has been a hot topic for crusading do-gooders for decades. But with all the outrage over the supposedly sickly-looking models, nobody's ever been able to put a stop to the anorexic reign of size zeros. Even now, the UK's best chance at banning "unhealthy" models in the looks like it's wilting away.

The British government has been eyeing new regulations that would require catwalk models to pay for a £500 ($933) health exam and certificate before they could do any work on the runway. While we think that seems kinda steep, it actually gathered a lot of support. Now, without similar bans in major fashion cities like New York or Milan, London is worried about all kinds of negative fallout -- especially at London Fashion Week.

Other, less-severe measures are being put in place to protect the health of British models, like promoting a drug and alcohol free backstage environment. Why alcohol-free?

Rachel Zoe's coffee and grapefruit diet

Stylist to the stars Rachel Zoe is best known for turning her clients into bobble-headed stick figures, most notably Nicole Richie, but she's also had Keira Knightly and Lindsay Lohan as clients. Zoe recently admitted that she doesn't always eat (gasp!) because she is her last priority.

She explains that, on a busy day, it can get to be 7:00 at night and she'll realize that she's only eaten a grapefruit and some coffee. Still, she claims, "It's not that I don't eat. I eat." You know, when she has the time. Which she never does.

We got your murves right here, ladies and bear-lovers

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men, Celebrities with Style

We always talk about women and how thin or "curvy" they are. As nice as it is to remind folks that women come in all shapes and sizes, we're tired of hearing all about what straight men like.

It's parity time. Here's the scoop (it's certainly not the skinny) on man shapes: sure, we like our men with "murves" but not so much that they can't fly on commercial airlines.

Really! Everyone likes Christian Bale better Batman Burly than all manorexic for The Machinist. And calling Colin Farrell: time to pound the Guinness and get manly again! It's important to have some meat on your bones. Looking like you can survive a little hibernation can be downright sexy. It gives off a sense of strength and stability. On the other end of the spectrum, if you can't find pants with zippers and pockets in your size, it's gone too far.

These are the most common categories of men with curves:

  • Cubs - usually occurs in younger men, once they discover beer, especially if they're a bit, erm, hairy.
  • Man weight - when they no longer have a smaller waist than their girlfriends. In the best scenarios it's "all muscle."
  • Burly - somewhere between here and man weight is the perfect Christian Bale/Batman moment. Between here and Bear: Russell Crowe.
  • Bear - Big. Hairy. Totally male. This is where most men wind up, especially if they are funny or a fan of Kathy Griffin.
  • Brando - like that episode when Homer Simpson wore a muumuu.

Making Karl Lagerfeld proud: Lindsay Lohan 6126 leggings with (built-in) kneepads

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

You don't have to be as skinny as Lindsay to wear her leggings, or as crazy. But it helps.

We thought we had to wait until the end of August for the 6126 leggings line, oh-so-originally named for Marilyn Monroe's birthday, to appear at Fred Segal. Hat tip to Perez Hilton for the great news that we can see the first four items and get them early, as in right this minute!

Yes, if you've been dying for a pair of shiny leggings...with built-in, quilted knee pads...named "Mr. President" (Finish the tasteless Friday joke: what's the difference between an egg, meat and a ____ ___? Hint: you can't beat it!) then today is your lucky day.

Get a look at the rest of this traumatic magic in the gallery, or head on over to shop intuition and place your order now, before they're gone. Those leopard ankle gloves are going to fly off the shelves. Absolutely fly.

Lindsay Lohan is getting skinny, and we all know what that means

Uh, oh. America's favorite sapphic starlet is setting off those substance abuse rumors again. Fox News is spreading reports that Linds, "isn't taking care of herself." For the repeat rehabber, that means drugs, or at least partying too much.

Lindsay and her gal-pal Sam Ronson are definitely skinny. And Sam, already not the prettiest girl at the party, works that dark-circle/heroin-pallor-look hard. Either she's spending some hard nights on the town, or she's adamantly trying to prove that superficial stuff, like concealer and blush, is beneath her notice.

We'll be able to judge Lindsay's weight loss for ourselves soon, when she appears in a red bathing suit on an episode of Living Lohan, her sister Ali's horrifying reality show. Let's hope that, if anything, she's taking the Master Cleanse a little too far, and not following the Rachel Zoe horse tranquilizer diet again.

Funny thing: Lindsay's all natural boobs are always the same size, no matter how big or small she gets...now that's a reason to gossip.

Starbucks conspiracy aims to fatten up Olsen twins

This has got to be one of the juiciest pieces of gossip we've ever heard -- and no, it's not about someone getting pregnant by her best friends husband, or another starlet on her way to rehab. This is about a common barista at Starbucks trying to do something for the greater good.
