Father's Day Gift Guide: for the new father

There's nothing more manly than becoming a father -- it's something that a woman technically cannot do. Still, most of the paraphernalia that comes along with the manhood's highest honor is far from being flattering to one's masculinity, but times they are a changing. Somebody somewhere had the good sense to start marketing dad-friendly diaper bags, and some of them are actually cool enough to be mistaken for a murse, laptop bag, or holdall.

We were totally impressed when we ran across this skull and iron cross-emblazoned diaper bag made by a company called DadGear. Sure, it costs $79.99 -- but you can't put a price tag on the male ego. If you're not the skull and iron cross type, you can tone it down with a Diaper Dude bag from Target. It's a little cheaper and doesn't put off that I'm trying too hard to be a cool dad vibe.

Why aren't you wearing this? Teardrop and Skull Earrings

Have you ever had a formal event to attend, and gotten yourself all gorgeous and dolled up only to look in the mirror and think, "Huh, that's not really me"? If you've got a bit of an edge to your style, it doesn't seem right to pack it all away for a night (unless you want to, of course).

Vans: Skulls and paisley

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Vintage and Retro

I must have worn right through the soles of my old black and white checkered Vans. Holy crap was I the coolest kid in my entire mind. I had those sunglasses with the little piece of pleather in the corners for maximum shade as well as the ultimate in limited visibility. I had my Ramones concert shirt, despite never having seen anyone other than Rick Springfield and REO Speedwagon in person (not together, man, that would have been a ticket!). I was cool, maybe even reckless, and everyone knew it. They saw it on my feet.

So I suffered from disillusions of grandeur. It happens.

I think Vans is about to send a whole new generation on a similar path, one filled with cool buzzes and tasty waves. The new Paisley Skull Slip-On almost demands it. The shoes come in 3 colors according to Ripe, at least that's what I think it says.

Skulls and paisley, what's not to like?

Gold skulls: bad taste or good conversation piece

Filed under: Haute Home, Events: On the Scene, Style in the News

Most fashion designers got the memo about the lameness of skulls, but apparently word didn't reach British artist Damien Hirst. Earlier this month, Hirst unveiled a diamond-crusted platinum skull at Whitecube, his London Gallery.

Dubbed "For the Love of God," the unconventional bust boasts a whopping 8,601 diamonds, so it's no wonder that the market price for the piece tops out at somewhere near $100 million dollars. According to Hirst, the glitzy skull, which cost $23 million to produce, explores "the fundamental themes of human existence - life, death, truth, love, immortality and art itself."

Uh, sure. Nothing cuts to the core of man's existential anxiety like $23 million worth of diamonds. I can't believe I'm saying this, but next to this over-priced, under-meaningful piece of crap, the Chapman Brothers' plastic blow-up dolls look almost museum-worthy.
