Is smoking on the runway a do or a don't?

Filed under: Style in the News

Jean Paul Gaultier must have wanted to go for the shock effect because he sent a model down the runway smoking a cigarette during Monday's Hermes show. I guess that's what happens if the clothes on their own are not interesting enough to get people talking.

Really, I do understand the look he was going for. The model was dressed in a mature, elegant coat and belt combo. Jean Paul probably thought that the cigarette would add sophistication.

But, c'mon! In this day and age we know better. I thought we had moved beyond the whole idea that smoking is glamorous and into the smoking kills, black lungs and hacking coughs are not glamorous era.

Is smoking on the runway a do or a don't?

Browse through the gallery and tell me what you think. Are these clothes good enough to stand on their own, or did they need the publicity stunt in order to be noticed?

Will the smoking ban impact UK fashion?

Filed under: Style in the News

Just like in New York, LA, and many other US cities, a ban on smoking in bars, restaurants and cafes is finally hitting the UK. Given the persistence of smoking in the fashion industry -- both in advertising, and due to the high number of models who are smokers -- what kind of effect will the ban have?

Will the industry finally have to leave behind the out-dated notion of cigarettes as symbols of confidence, empowerment and freedom? Will models continue to use cigarettes as props on catwalks? Will they still be able to sell the idea of smoking as youthful and rebellious?

If the photo at right -- taken from a recent W magazine -- is any indication, I'd say the answer is probably "yes." In spite of the ban, and the fact that -- ironically -- smoking prematurely ages the skin, the "dangerous" or "edgy" look that designers and fashion photographers are fond of is still accomplished by having their models promote cigarettes.

Gisele's new reason for weight gain

Hmmm, this is interesting. In February, Sarah noted that model Gisele Bundchen had gained 14 pounds to participate in Milan Fashion Week, due to Milan's guidelines regarding models' weights and BMIs. Now the blogs have picked up a story from The Sun that says Gisele is packing on weight for a different reason. No, she's not pregnant with Tom Brady's baby (at least that we know of yet). Gisele says she has put on 15 pounds because she stopped smoking and has rediscovered food. Apparently being able to actually taste things has given her a renewed interest in eating. I'm just curious if these are the same pounds that were previously reported.

Is smoking still sexy?

I used to be a smoker. I liked it, and thought I looked damn cool doing it. But I gave up 3 years ago when my daughter was born, and in the meantime, the numbers of smokers has declined, and seemingly every place worth living or visiting won't let you light up. So the question is: can smoking still be sexy?

The girls at Naughty Secretary Club think so, with this ultra-chic, hand-painted, one-of-a-kind bag. From their website: "Snake Skin Smoke is so super sexy that I am almost running out of descriptive words that start with the letter S."

Maybe. I know smoking is supposed to be sexy, because it's been viewed that way for generations. But are we over it? Does having a cigarette hanging out of someone's mouth really making them more attractive, or, these days, are we better off without it?

My vote: smoking is dead.

Bad news blondes

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

Blonds may have more fun, but do they have more health problems? Well, if they aren't naturally blond -- and who among them is -- the answer is that they might.

In the New York Times Thursday Styles section, Natasha Singer addressed the recent report in the American Journal of Epidemiology which linked hair dye to an increased risk for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (in Larry David speak, "the bad lymphoma"). Singer's piece tends to wind back and forth between suggesting that "Yes, hair dye is dangerous" and "No, hair dye is safe".

But I can appreciate the way she meanders. After all, weighing risk against benefit is not an easy thing to do. When you consider that the risk factor for developing lymphoma is fairly low (1.19 times more likely), it's hard to say that coloring your hair is a significant threat to your health. Smoking, for instance, makes you 10 to 60 times more likely to get lung cancer. Put in perspective, coloring your hair doesn't exactly seem like risky behavior.

Pulling a Jessica Simpson and dyeing your locks from brown to blond to Cheeto's orange, on the other hand, is definitely risky behavior.
