Gola Launches Christian Lacroix Designed Sneaker Collection

Christian Lacroix's Gola collectionFor those of you who believe that sports and fashion go hand in hand, Gola has teamed up with Christian Lacroix to develop a line of haute couture sneakers, embossed and embroidered with a small French fashion house feel. You know what they say: fashion makes strange bedfellows -- wait, that's politics. Anyway, the collection hit shelves this week in the US and will be available exclusively at Lacroix's boutique stores in New York and Las Vegas.

Recession Takes a Bite Out of Puma

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

Geeky pair of Puma high topsWe're struggling to make sense out of this one. Earlier this week, Puma sportswear announced that its net-earnings in the 4th quarter were down 78.8%. Ouch. That surprises us because: a.) dude, we freakin' love Puma's geeky shoes, and b.) labels on the mid-lower end seem to be the only ones doing any business these days. Apparently, any brand that hasn't hammered out a distribution deal with Wal-Mart is totally screwed.

Gola means goals: Score some with your feet

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Vintage and Retro, Men, Kids and Babies

Gola brand shoes have been popular in the United Kingdom for over one hundred years. Yes, 100 years. Anything that can stay in style that long has got to have something going for it.

It is believed that the name is Gola is an anagram of 'goal,' which led to their first ad campaign "Gola means Goals" which you may have noticed sitting totally stolen in homage atop this post (followed by some lame attempt at a football tie-in, but what do we know, we call it soccer).

David Beckham talks about his career as an underwear model

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

David Beckham may not have a future as an underwear model. Women everywhere went gaga for the huge Armani billboard featuring Becks in his skivvies. Probably the only female on the entire planet who wasn't happy about seeing the sexy soccer man's package on display was his "mum." As soon as she heard about her half naked son out on display she called to ask him what the heck he was doing! Keep reading to watch a clip of David's interview with Jay Leno.

Giorgio Armani creates collection for soccer team

Filed under: Style in the News

Giorgio ArmaniLike professional football, baseball or basketball players in the US, pro soccer players in the UK can probably afford all the designer suits they want. But instead of leaving the athletes to make their own fashion choices, one team has teamed up Giorgio Armani so the owners can be certain that their players will always look good.

The new formal outfits for Chelsea Football Club's formal functions includes a single-breasted, two-button navy blue crease resistant lightweight wool gabardine suit, with flat-front, straight-legged trousers and a fitted jacket with pronounced "Roman" shoulder line.

Sounds impressive. And, says Armani, it should be: "Today at a club like Chelsea the players are international role models and need to look the part."

Fortunately for fans of both Armani and the world-famous soccer team, the look will also be made available to the public -- though, I imagine it might be just a tad more expensive than a tracksuit in Chelsea colors.

Fun shoes for summer: soccer slip-ons

Vans, after becoming popular when skateboarding went mainstream in the mid-90s, refuse to go out of style. This latest incarnation is a fun way for any fashion-forward dude to look cool this summer.

The range of soccer-inspired footwear currently comes in the national colors of countries famous for being World Cup contenders (Mexico, Sweden and Portugal are featured in the photo), but should be expanded by the time the shoes are officially released in June.

Bright, eccentric shoes -- when done right -- are always a great addition to any outfit, especially during the more carefree summer months.

A note of caution: especially if you live in US, or -- even worse -- are an American traveling abroad, choosing a pair decorated in red, white and blue will make you look silly. Namely, because the US is bad at soccer, and everyone knows it. The idea is to make yourself looked sophisticated, even though you're wearing something loud and attention-grabbing. So do a little research, find a color scheme you like from a country that's made it to the quarterfinals in one of the last two World Cups, and you'll be fine.

Can David Beckham make American athletes more fashionable?

Despite all the help I've given you in sprucing up your pad for the Final Four, the truth is, you sporting types aren't the most fashionable people on the planet. In fact, rumor has it that most of you dress in the dark. Everyday. But thanks to the recent arrival of international soccer star and fashion icon, David Beckham, maybe you'll be upping your game, and dressing with a little forethought.

Because let's face it, at the moment, things look bad. Wendell Brown, the editor of Esquire magazine told Reuters that you atheletes are "desperately" in need of fashion advice, and Adam Raporport, the style editor at GQ, says "I don't think anyone's stepped up to the plate since Jordan retired and I think they could use one." In fact, the NBA had to institute an off-court dresscode your wardrobes had fallen into such disrepair.

But I don't want to be too hard on you. Most of you are pretty big guys, and -- as a tall man myself -- I can only imagine that it's difficult to find good-looking clothing in your size. I understand that Mr. Beckham plays soccer, and thus, is smaller, and a better size for the Dolce and Gabbana, Versace and Prada clothing that he wears. That being said, you make in a week what I make in a year, so you have more options.

I encourage you to look into them.

(PS: No matter how you dress, I'll still think you're awesome.)
