Secretly Straight Models, Socialites for Sale, and Sexy Burns - Cut the Labels 3/26/09

Filed under: Style in the News

Which international male fashion model, in an unusual twist, is secretly straight? The openly gay film actor he's dating (and having pay for his lifestyle) doesn't know about the girlfriend he keeps back home.

Which fashion-forward socialite is secretly selling the family jewels through a middle-man in Italy so her friends don't find out the family has run out of money? This will come as a rude shock to the two generations beneath her, who don't realize the inheritance is largely gone.

Which NYC fashion editor tried to explain away curious wounds on his face as shaving cuts? In fact they were chemical burns left by amyl nitrate, a sex-enhancing drug, spilled during a drunken tryst.

Heir to Hermes fortune shows his rowdy side

Filed under: Style in the News

Just because you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, doesn't mean you were born with manners. Case in point: 37-year-old Mathias Guerrand-Hermes, heir to the uber-luxurious Hermes empire. The "socialite" and "polo player" is charged with assaulting an Air France captain during a transatlantic flight from Paris to New York.

Chris Benz and Elettra Wiedermann: BFF, SFL, and all those other acronyms we scribbled on our notebooks as kids

As the popular 80s hip hip group Whodini once said: "Friends, how many of us have them?"

Well, we're not sure how many cool or riddiculous friends Elettra Wiedermann and Chris Benz have between them, but we do know the two are very, very fond of each other.

Before Elettra packs up all of her things in New York to study biomedicine at The London School of Economics and Political Science this fall, Style.com managed to snag a interview with her and designer Chris Benz.

In ths clip, watch as the buddies giggle, talk about how awesome the other one and discuss a little bit of fashion in between. Enjoy.

Who is behind SocialiteRank.com?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

If you aren't familiar with SocialiteRank.com, it's a blog that ranks New York socialites based on fairly subjective criteria like fashion decisions, appearances, buzz, boyfriends and hair color.

According to a post on Radar Online, a certain anonymous socialite on the bottom of the ladder of the society-obsessed blog, SocialiteRank.com, has now hired a Private Investigator to find out who is behind the catty website.

The socialite behind the investigation wants to remain anonymous, but she did say that in finding who is behind the website, she hoped she could pressure him or her to play fair with the rankings. Read: she doesn't like hers and wishes she had Tinsley Mortimer's! She is probably also going through publicists like the rest of us go through pairs of socks.

Now I don't mean to be dismissive of something that is obviously upsetting to someone else, but COME ON!?! A little bit of superficiality can be good, but taking superficiality seriously enough to hire a P.I. to figure out who is the brains behind a poorly-written blog sounds paranoid and pathetic.

Who is Tinsley Mortimer?

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

It seems like every time I open The New York Times style section, I see a photograph of a woman who is identified as Tinsley Mortimer. Because her name is so very odd, I guess she's become familiar to me in that "not so familiar" sort of way -- like the guy you always see at the coffee shop who you don't actually know, but do you know he likes his cappuccino dry.

It turns out that Tinsley Mortimer is, as I expected, some kind of super-socialite. It's unclear to me why she's a socialite, but a number of articles have referenced her "signature blond curls" and her "line of designer handbags." According to socialrank.com, Mortimer is currently number two on the social charts, which is a calculation based on society appearances and publicity presence. Even still, being called a "socialite" on the society pages doesn't really tell me anything specific about her.

So I'm putting this question to you, dear reader: Who is Tinsley Mortimer?
