Shoes surpass stocks as sound investments

Filed under: Style in the News, Shoes

If the economic crisis has you cutting back on your fashion budget, take notice: spending on a pair of shoes may actually be a wiser investment than, well, investing.

Here's the logic, according to The Business Sheet: gently-worn designer shoes can command up to 80 percent of their original retail price at a used clothing store or website. The author points out that a used pair of Jimmy Choos--original price $785--are now on sale at Portero.com for $485.

"Now, say you bought shares of Wachovia on Monday. You'd be down 40%. If you owned the boots you'd already be ahead, and we're guessing you're going to be a lot more ahead next week. Advantage, boots."

It all sounds fine and dandy, but we kind of doubt most financial advisers will be ready to get on board with this kind of advice.

How do you shop?

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

The Budget Fashionista wants you to take the TBF Annual Shopping Survey. It only take about five minutes (seriously -- I just took it and you didn't even miss me, did you?) and is anonymous, so you can tell them the scariest shopping secret in your whole closet and nobody will know that it's you.

Last year over 2500 folks took the survey, which not only helps TBF in determining certain elements of the site but also lets you see how you compare to other shoppers. The questions range from how often you shop to where you shop, and go on to ask what you think is a reasonable amount (or how much you'd be willing to spend) on certain items.

The results will be posted on The Budget Fashionista so you can see how others answered those same questions. Or, if you have any really interesting answers, leave them in the comments!

The Gap has to cut way back on spending

Filed under: Style in the News

Eek! We have yet another sign that the economy is going downhill. The Gap corporation has taken a decision to cut costs, meaning the advertising budget is getting slashed. You know it's bad when they decide to scale down those awesome, high budget Old Navy ads.

The Gap will not be going ahead with it's spring campaign as planned. The CFO of the company, Sabrina Williams has said, "The primary focus of spring marketing for the namesake division will be print and in-store efforts for the retailer's footwear collaboration with designer Pierre Hardy, due out in March."

The reason behind all these cost cuts is simple. Profits are down. Gap finished the month of Feb. about 5% down from where it was at this time last year. Old Navy profits also decreased by 5%. The only store in the family that has posted gains is Banana Republic, coming in at a 2% increase.

I'm all for putting their ad dollars to better use. I mean just look at this commercial! If they pay me ten bucks I'll come up with something more creative than this. Hey, at least they have a good song playing in the background.

Store's Smell Makes You Spend

What really makes you buy the things you do?What makes you splurge on a cool new pair of jeans, or spend a little more than you wanted on a hip new shirt -- is it really the look, or is it the store?

A number of studies suggest that it's the latter. Scientists (and retailers) know that smells, sounds -- even the color of the walls -- make the difference when a customer is deciding whether to buy an item of clothing. Research suggests that impulsive buyers are more likely to be lured in by fun music, whereas more pensive customers are more receptive to an alluring scent. Everyone is likely to think products are higher in quality if they're surrounded by pleasant decor -- with your cultural background determining which colors you find the the most appealing. And we're also all enticed by quick turnover -- meaning that stores which repeatedly replenish their racks with the latest fashion are more likely to get us buying now, instead of waiting a couple months for the same items to go on sale.

The moral of the story is: don't be fooled. Every store -- no matter how light, fun and friendly it seems -- has one goal: to make money by selling you their product. Avoid overspending by making sure you're purchasing something you actually want instead of something you were tricked into buying by hip music and cute decor.
