At the DSquared2 fashion show in Milan on Monday, heads turned in confusion as models traipsed past with what some might not consider a classic fashion accessory -- the Starbucks cup. WTF?

Tip of the day: You are what you eat

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Juicy! There is no denying the truth behind the phrase, "You are what you eat." A perfect example is the huge zit you always get after housing a greasy pizza. You can also put a positive spin on the saying and change the way you eat for good.

Summer is the best time to kick start better eating habits for your skin, hair, body, and even your mind. There is so much juicy fruit and yummy grilled chicken around that it's easier to say no to macaroni salad and the ice cream man.

Starbucks conspiracy aims to fatten up Olsen twins

This has got to be one of the juiciest pieces of gossip we've ever heard -- and no, it's not about someone getting pregnant by her best friends husband, or another starlet on her way to rehab. This is about a common barista at Starbucks trying to do something for the greater good.

Service industry wants Heidi Klum to design their uniforms

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

If you've ever had to wear a uniform at your job -- and let's face it most of us have -- you probably took away the same life lesson that we did: uniforms suck. Most of them look tacky, but even the rare uniform that doesn't combine horrendous color combos with checkers and stripes is still somehow just a little humiliating. It's like you're supposed to not feel cool.

We've always thought that the uniform is a management tactic to keep employees in their place, but apparently lots people think that corporations just need a little help from fashion professionals like Heidi Klum. Then, going to work in a uniform wouldn't suck. After Heidi challenged designers to rethink the uniform for US postal workers on Project Runway, she says that flight attendants, baristas, and cashiers are constantly asking her to do something about their horrible attire.

Gas masks are the new black

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

As the end of days draws closer and closer you probably find yourself wondering what you should wear. Is it formal? When the chemical warfare starts will the mall stay open? These are important questions, and that's why Diddo Velema has created this conceptual art project using Gucci and Louis Vuitton. There's got to be more to the final countdown than the Final Countdown, right?

Just like the bottles of water, rolls of toilet paper and case of Spam you have stashed in the basement, a gas mask is an important part of a well-stocked apocalypse survival readiness kit.

The thing is, you can't stay underground forever, eventually the Spam will gel beyond means of consumption and at some point you'll run out of shows on the TiVo. That's when you need to don your gear and head to the surface to see if anything besides cockroaches and Starbucks survived. Grab a raid latte and show all the mutants how to look fabulous.

It looks something like this:

Oh, and if these aren't enough, there's always this.

Designer Gas Masks is a conceptual art project. The masks are not real commercial products!
They are designed to be displayed in magazines and exhibited at galleries. They are not for sale.

How to wear a quilt and not look stupid

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing, Dresses

When I think of women who wear quilts as clothing, hippies immediately come to mind. But not real hippies, just "nu age" types who drink Chai tea no-caf-half-lip-wrappa-frappa lattes from Starbucks and talk about "love and light in the moment" (while having absolutely no idea what that means). Bleh. Ugh. Wretch.

But never fear, die-hard quilt fan, because it is possible to wear a blanket as a garment and still look cool. The French design collective, Andrea Crews, came up with this dress that, as far as I can tell, simply has a quilt sewn on top of it -- and it looks fantastic. I love the way it hangs down as decoration, but can also be pulled out to be fully displayed every time someone asks: "is that a real quilt?" Or, presumably, whenever you want to draw attention to yourself.

While it might look simple, take care before trying this at home. The dress works mostly because of how the colors work together, so make sure you choose your color scheme accordingly. Also, I'd make sure you sew the quilt onto the same part of the dress (just beneath the bust), or it will be incredibly unflattering.

Starbucks hits the spot this time

Well, despite the fact that I criticized Starbucks for its prices and product-quality in an article a few days ago, they've created something that I just can't denounce.

They've added quite a few products to their ready-to-drink line, seen here at BevNet.com. I've seen and tried the Starbucks Frappucino and DoubleShot drinks that have been out for some time, but wasn't too impressed. However, a couple of the new products have really gotten my caffeine taste buds brewing. (And the commercials are pretty entertaining to boot!)

My favorite of the new drinks is simple -- the Iced Coffee Italian Roast. It's still terribly hot here in the afternoons, so I can't bear a hot coffee while I'm walking around campus. Because of this, I gave the new Iced Coffee a try. It doesn't taste like it's coming out of a can, it doesn't taste burnt like many of the in-store brews do, and it simply delivers what I want -- a nice, smooth coffee taste. (None of those exotic blends for me.)

Also added to the line: a strawberries and creme Frappucino, a light Iced Coffee, and a light version of the previous DoubleShot.

Who needs Starbucks when you've got Dancing Goats?

I was tired of Starbucks and other chain coffees -- tired of the taste and the price. So, I searched. I drank. I burned my tongue. I caffeinated. I cringed at some of the bitter blends of coffee that many shops in Athens serve up. I thought I would never find a decent way to satisfy my love for the coffee bean (and caffeine).

But then my girlfriend informed me of Dancing Goats, a blend of coffee from Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, that she had tried at a local pub & coffeehouse. I was a little skeptical at first. I was accustomed to names like "Breakfast Blend" or "Arabian Mocha," nothing that sounded anything close to this.

I gave it a try and was thoroughly impressed. According to the website, Dancing Goats was named in reference to a legend that claims an Ethiopian shepherd's goats started "dancing" after eating a bush of red berries.

The coffee is dark, smooth, and full of flavor. And you can't get much cooler than the name. You'll sound like a coffee aficionado when you tell your friends.

The company also sells quite a few different blends, one of which is sure to suit your caffeine addiction. Buy Dancing Goats for your home or suggest it to your local barista.

Fixed gear bikes

Fixed gear bikes make life simple, right? One gear, one speed. No coasting, no brakes (you slow down by putting backward pressure on the pedals, kind of like the coaster brake you had on your bike as a kid. Except that now you're riding in traffic). Nothing to break and nothing to steal.

Back in the day, fixies were the ride of choice for bike messengers, punks, hipsters, angry young men and women with piercings aplenty. But a quick look at what's locked up outside my local Starbucks has yielded an unmistakable truth: yuppies are riding these things.

So, are fixed-gear bikes cool? Well, it depends:
  • is danger cool?
  • is a take-your-$3500-Lance-Armstrong-wannabe-bike-and-shove-it attitude cool?
  • is bare-bones, frill-free simplicity cool? (a follow-up: how many of you are reading this via dial-up?)
Like most things, the relative coolness of fixies is complicated.

One thing's clear, however: don't stop pedaling.
