
I've started to become a bit fascinated by the
cyclical nature of brand trends. As we've seen before, Gap has gone from hip to forgotten to hip to totally over-saturated. Coach has gone from slightly stodgy luxury brand to mall-lover's delight and,
in my opinion, H&M is headed down the same path from known by a few, to loved by many, to eventually passing out of fashion. But like an actor who appears in too many movies, then disappears off the radar for a while and returns to star in a blockbuster and becomes more popular than ever could Gap be headed for a comeback? Red campaign is a good place to start and I think they've got something pretty good going with
Piperlime. I also think that they have a very good basic concept in
Forth & Towne, their line aimed at the older consumer which also goes up to size 20 but that they haven't really done enough to promote it yet. Hey, maybe Gap is back...
