Nintendo does street fashion

Filed under: Style in the News

KOEI announced today that it's coming out with a fashion-savvy game for Nintendo DS called POP CUTIE! The game is apparently one part trend-hunting, and one part retail management. Because it's every gamers dream to finally get to play a game that simulates the day-to-day business of a retail clothing store. Right? The game is not expected to be a hit with men ages 0-100.

POP CUTIE! will offer people who don't have jobs -- probably because they're obsessed with gaming -- a chance to have a virtual job where they run a small fashion boutique. Players will hire models and assistants, design their shop's look, place magazine ads, choose their own muzak, and even run the cash register. Yipee! Why is it that games marketed towards women always seem more like work than entertainment?

3:33 Footwear finally shipping, looks dope

There's been loads of buzz on this young, shoe line out of LA called 3:33 Footwear. It's been picked up by some of the most forward men's wear buyers at boutiques like Stand Up Comedy, Portland, OR and Oak, NYC. Well, the wait is over and, as the current season ships (show at right), our spies at 3:33 passed along a fall preview (see gallery below).

Pro skateboarder turned designer Andrew Reynolds went markedly darker for next season, in both mood and palette. He says, "The inspiration for the fall collection is a guy that roams around my neighborhood. I'm pretty sure he's homeless and drinks a lot." It might sound a bit rough, but the style points are functional, casual and familiar, with just a slight twist and plenty of literal, street cred.

Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue

Filed under: Style in the News

Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue is online now
Bloody brilliant. We're loving Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue, now available to view online in full. We especially love the column entitled "I Hate Fashion" written by Tracie Egan of Jezebel.com. Our sentiments exactly. But wait... we also totally identify with Christopher Bollen's article "I Love Fashion." Oh fashion, how we love to hate you! The trend reports for NYC and London are spot on as well, and hilarious to boot. And who but Vice would dare to cast porn star Sasha Grey in a provocative but very clever fashion spread? (Get it? Spread?) Seriously, Vice's snarky take on all things fashion is not to be missed.

wardrobe_remix Top Pic(k)s: Ready for Spring

wardrobe_remix is a Flickr community dedicated to exploring all the amazing everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. Real people, just like you and me. Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

I love this look by Yes Becky. Taken against the scenic backdrop of London's rainy Hyde Park, she looks so well put together and ready for spring. I love the combination of the yellow and turquoise with the black. She's matched everything just so perfectly...if you look closely, even her manicure matches the outfit! All of the individual pieces of this outfit look great as well, and almost everything is from class British labels such as Topshop, Primark, and Miss Selfridge.

N.E.E.T. Magazine for Grassroots Fashion

Filed under: Style in the News, Vintage and Retro

The spring issue of N.E.E.T. Magazine just came out over the weekend, and as usual, it does not disappoint. This online-only magazine is the brainchild of Stephanie J, a freelance web designer based in the UK who created the mag as a way to spotlight her top picks in grassroots fashion and creativity.

N.E.E.T. is free, published quarterly, and packed full of the best in independent designers, vintage online shopping, and fashion photography and illustration by up and coming artists from around the globe. The March 2008 issue has a great spotlight on some European fashion bloggers plus a few killer photographic spreads. There's a DIY tutorial for making an adorable applique pillow, plus you can find out how many vintage stores get those amazing antique goods. The cool thing about N.E.E.T. is that as you're browsing the magazine, you can click on the website addresses for featured shops and advertisers and be taken directly to their websites. (Links will open in a new window, so you don't lose your place while you're reading the mag.)

A review in Venus Magazine likened N.E.E.T. to "NYLON's funkier, thrift-store chic little sister". I think that's a pretty apt description. Check out the current issue here or browse back issues.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

I noticed a lot of creative layering going on this week...everything from neutral palettes to crazy color combinations. I love this earthy outfit worn by the beautiful softspoken. In fact, I think I'm pretty much smitten with this lady's style, period. She's not afraid to mix it up and experiment with color and layers. You see more of her wonderfully quirky style on Flickr and at her blog.

One of my favorite pictures added to the community this past week was this one, by super fab & fashionable Australian blogger Gala Darling. Gala made a post about this dress on her own blog and says she got this gorgeous, foxy flight attendant inspired piece from her friend Joanna at Bowerbird Vintage. I just checked the site out and it's got loads of cute vintage and refashioned dresses, accessories and more. Plus, if you happen to live in Australia, you can take advantage of the free shipping offer through the end of February.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

Yesterday Kyle pointed out how yellow is popping up all over the place these days. I couldn't help but think the same thing as I browsed through some of the most recent additions to the wardrobe_remix community. Yellow was appearing absolutely everywhere... in tights and accessories, in shoes and boots, and as big pops of color in dresses and jackets. I love how these bright, sunny splashes of color remind me that warm spring days really are just around the corner.

What I Wore: Kimono Dress

What I Wore: Kimono Dress by Trashy DivaI almost made this a Dress of the Day post, except lately this is the dress I want to wear everyday. Yep, that's me at right, in my current favorite outfit.

I have to make an effort not to throw this same ensemble on day after day to head off to work. It really is an effort, too, because for some reason I'm totally in love with this look. It's so comfy and easy to wear... one day recently my alarm didn't go off and I woke up half an hour before I had to be at work. I threw this outfit on and my boss said I still looked fab.

Are you as smitten as I am? If so, you're in luck, because I'm going to tell you how to steal my look:

tentacle earrings: OctopusMe
octopus necklace: very similar to this one by dahliasforme
dress: Kimono Dress in navy floral by Trashy Diva
boots: Fluevog (of course!)

wardrobe_remixer mouthyspaceOne of my fashion obsessions is checking out all of the everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. We're talking REAL people here. Not celebrities, not uber-thin models. What do real people like you and me wear in their everyday lives? That's what the wardrobe_remix community on Flickr is all about exploring.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, I thought I'd start picking out some of my favorite recent remixers and posting them every week or so. Remember: these are real people, of all different shapes and sizes showing off their own personal style. You'll find everything here from mainstream mall finds to thrift store scores to haute couture and everything in between. There is no right or wrong. Or as Tricia would say, "It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it."

This week I noticed a lot of bright, bold pops of colors paired with neutrals, like in this outfit worn by user mouthyspace. I love the pairing of the simple red ribbon belt with this graphic print skirt.

Musical fashion, say it ain't so

Elle New York Street FashionThose New Yorkers are so crazy aren't they? Sometimes crazy fashions can be pardoned because they are being sported by "New Yorkers". I think that's just crap. What are New Yorkers the new Harojuki girls? Oh please, gimme a break.

Here is an example of a New York "fashionista" flexing her crazy muscles in an attempt to sport her favorite musical instrument, a tambourine, as a necklace. The results are terrifying.

Even if she took off the tambourine the outfit is still pretty messy. Unless of course she is heading to a "casual prom." Wait, maybe that's what happened she is a "rockin" tambourine player who got a gig at a high school prom and she got her purse stolen on the way. That's why her instrument is hanging around her neck!

Whew ... glad there was a clear explanation for that fashion nightmare.
