Guys - If you only have one suit, here's what you need to know

Filed under: Men, Videos, Celebrities with Style

Some guys wear a suit every day for work. Most likely, these fellas know what to look for in a good suit -- they're surrounded by them, and they've probably suit shopped more than once. But a lot of men wear suits only for certain occasions -- weddings, funerals, and maybe interviews -- and these are the guys we're talking to today.

If you're only going to have one suit hanging in your closet, make it the right suit. Whether you choose one that's hot or hideous, you're going to be spending a chunk of change on it, so you might as well look your best. And, take a cue from GQ -- dress like Cary Grant.

Princess Anne's thrifty wardrobe

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

Princess Anne
Well, perhaps Jennifer Lopez' babies can't wear the same outfit twice, but Princess Anne isn't above it. On several occasions, the Princess has worn an outfit on separate occasions. In fact, she did so just this weekend.

She first wore a Maureen Baker white and yellow dress 27 years ago to the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, and wore it again this Saturday to Lady Rose Windsor's nuptials, complete with the same yellow flowered hat.

Tip of the day: How to rock a white suit

Filed under: Men, Celebrities with Style, Style Tip of the Day

Alright so you want to wear a white suit. Phhhooo, this is a toughie. White suits often make a man appear like he thinks his ish don't stink. You know the type: majestic yet totally tacky, sexy yet a complete ago maniac, cool yet far from innocent. The bastards. Studs like P.Diddy and David Beckham are prime white suit candidates. And didn't Al Capone and Scarface wear them too? As you see it takes a heck of a man to rock this right.

So if you think you've got the stuff to pull a white suit off here are a few more rules to follow to make sure you're the dapperest don in the room.

Going pro: What your color says about you

Somewhere during your grown-up years, chances are you'll have the opportunity to attend some sort of networking event. And, while you could go with the resume tee, in some professions that might not go over all that well -- you need to find a more polished, professional look.

However, before you throw on your trusty old suit, think about the message you want to send. Just as the type of attire you choose (suit, dress, etc.) says something about you, the color you choose sends a message to prospective contacts and employers. Check out the gallery to see what impression different colors make.

Bruce Wayne gets an Armani makeover

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men, Celebrities with Style

Nothing but the best will do for Batman, that's for sure. He's got the Batmobile for Pete's sake, and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne lives in complete luxury. And so, it's only fitting that Bruce (played by Christian Bale) will be sporting Giorgio Armani Hand Made-to-Measure throughout the highly anticipated Batman flick, The Dark Knight.

Also fitting is the fact that Armani will be designing for a superhero, seeing as how last May he chaired the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition, Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. Armani acknowledges that this line is the perfect choice for Batman's less rubber-ensconced side, saying, "As a Giorgio Armani Hand Made-to-Measure client, Bruce Wayne is demonstrating his status as a discriminating and sophisticated connoisseur of fine fashion, while also showing he has individual taste."

Parke & Ronen: Men's classic swimwear

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Men

Parke & Ronen make stylish swimwear for men that range from classic preppy to classic board short. Of their four basic types of suit, bikini, 4" swim, 8" swim and snap short, respectively, our favorite is the 8" swim. It's not that we don't care for the other options that they carry, we really do, but frankly, if we tried to wear any of the other styles onto the beach we'd most likely be arrested. Or at the very least ridiculed until we wound up under the pier in the fetal position.

They are for the fit. Daniel Craig fit, not second base on the Styledash softball/drinking team fit.

Pocket squares aren't for squares

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Men

This one is for Clinton Kelly.

If Mr. Kelly, of TLC's What Not to Wear, has pushed one fashion accessory on the American public it is the pocket square. Unfortunately, very few of the very few men that appear on the show are open to said square. Why not? What's the big deal?

Do people think squares are for squares? Probably. Not us. We agree, Clinton, a bold silk handkerchief in a man's coat pocket can add just the right amount of pop to his ensemble.

Worst Oscar styles EVER: Celine Dion, 1999

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

In case you didn't know, Celine Dion didn't start out in life looking the way she does. As her career took off, her looks improved dramatically ... which is probably why this outfit choice for the 1999 Academy Awards baffles me so. I mean, I totally understand wanting to take a risk, but clothing needs to be worn facing the front. Kris Kross figured this out by the time they hit puberty, so why didn't someone jump in and tell poor Celine?

The thing is, it's not only that the jacket looks like it's on backwards -- it looks like it's on backwards and isn't made to be worn that way. It just doesn't seem to fit properly. Wouldn't you love to see her try to lift her arms in that?

Hot look for fall: Naughty Secretary

naughty secretary lookIf you are too scared to rock the menswear look this fall but still love that "I mean business" look, perhaps the Naughty Secretary look is more for you.

While most little girls were dreaming up their white wedding, I was sitting back imaginng myself all grown up in a black power suit that cost more than the salary that my silly little assistant would make. I would have on sky high heels, a fabulous leather tote (think Birkin), black framed glasses, and red lips. I never imagined myself looking dowdy with some ill-fitting boxy suit, disgusting pantyhose, square toed shoes, and some lame brief case.

This look is nothing like that.

The Naughty Secretary look
is similar to the menswear look that is so hot for this Fall '07 except, well, it's tighter. Much tighter. Think close fitting suits, sexy shift dresses, chic glasses, long-to-the-elbow gloves, cinched in belts, and of course ... sky high heels. This look is best suited in basics like black and white, and if you are feeling extra naughty, a splash of red.

Make sure you wear the naughty secretary look with caution. You don't want to come off looking like you are auditioning for an adult movie. Nor do you want to look like you are hungry for a tryst with your boss. C'mon, there is a difference between naughty and naughty (if you know what I mean).

Dress of the Day: Textured tweed suit

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

ellen tracy textured tweed suitIt's Monday, so you need a good reason to feel good about trudging to the office. Looking great is a fabulous reason!

Though it's not a dress, per se, a suit certainly fits into the category because there's no need to think about matching a top and bottom (except whatever you wear inside). A suit, which has the potential to be boring and very unimaginative, but the Textured Tweed Suit from Ellen Tracy in hazelnut tweed has all kinds of style. Apart from the fact that tweed is trendier for for this season moreso than it usually is for fall, the suit jacket has a spread collar and sassy turned-back cuffs. The straight, almost-pencil skirt falls to the knee, which is just the right length to wear with boots of any height.

The Textured Tweed Suit is on the last day of the Neiman Marcus First Call Sale; $336 for the jacket, $171 for the skirt.
