Kim Cattrall's enormous floppy hat is stupid, but still a good reminder

Filed under: Skin Care, Celebrities with Style

kim cattrall giant hat
I am all in favor of wide-brimmed straw hats, but Kim Cattrall's Sex and the City character in a hat so enormous it could pick up satellite signals from space was a little much. Does she have to turn sideways to walk through doorways?

Nevertheless, seeing the exaggerated hat was a good reminder about sun protection. Because winter days have fewer sunlight hours and the air is cold, it's pretty easy to forget that we need to wear moisturizers with SPF every day, and if we head out on a resort getaway to either sand or snow, the full battery of all-over sunscreens.

And of course, if you want to wear a straw hat in the winter, we won't be mad at you.

Styles that Stick: Aviator sunglasses

Filed under: Accessories, Vintage and Retro

Invest in a pair of classic aviator shades and you will not have to worry about your protective eyewear going out of style. I remember a few years ago during the most recent surge in aviator popularity, I found a pair of my father's old aviators from the early '80s and I marveled at how the glasses still looked like they came straight from the latest fashion magazines. It's true: For the past three decades or so, aviator shades have happily coasted alongside the more fickle eye candy trends, from Tom Cruise's Risky Business Ray-Ban Wayfarers to Nicole Richie's bug-eyed super-shades.

The glasses were originally made by Ray-Ban for military pilots back in the 1930s. The style has since been a staple to the military and law enforcement wardrobe, but has also found wide popularity in the civilian public's everyday wear, most recently during the 2000s' retro obsession.

Honestly, one can never go wrong with these glasses. Hipster holy land Urban Outfitters carries plenty and, if you're willing to pay more, labels like Dior carry aviators too.

Seven Days of Style: Smart SPF

SPF cosmeticsSo now that you've decided on where to go for your much deserved winter getaway, it's time to start packing. If you're off to the islands, you'll pack light, and if you're trekking up a mountain, you'll be packing a a little more. In either case, though, don't forget protection!

That's right, whether Aruba or Aspen, the sun is going to be strong. To help make sure that you do a little now (sunscreen) to prevent having to do a lot later (Dr. 90210), Styledash has seven days of suncare.

Sunday, Sunscreen on Your Face - We've said it before, and we aren't shy about saying it again. And again. And again. You must wear sunscreen. It seems counter-intuitive to wear sunscreen when you're going to play in the snow, but honey, it's twice as strong out there in the mountains, since you're at a higher elevation and the sun's sparkling rays hit you not only from above, but reflect off the snow underneath. A lot of moisturizers out there have a sibling with SPF. Juice Beauty's Green Apple Moisturizer is not only sun-protective, but all of Juice Beauty's products are 100% certified organic.

Monday, Make the Most of Your Foundation - Don't forget that you can go double, even triple protection out there with the makeup you use. Clinique's City Base Compact Foundation goes on creamy, finished powdery, and provides a physical barrier from the elements, as well as SPF 15.

Tuesday, Triple Protection Powder - Lots of compact powders have sun-protection, in varying degrees of SPF. Stila's Illuminating Powder is a velvety powder that has an SPF of 12. It doesn't sound like much, but don't forget that you're wearing that on top of a moisturizer and foundation that both have SPF, too.
