Dress of the day - Gap strappy tiered dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

Dresses like this are made for the last hot days of summer - it's an easy style that you can just as easily wear on top of your bathing suit or out to a casual lunch. We like the "nude rose" shade pictured here, because it's as refreshing as a fruit sorbet. Pretty!

Made of 100% cotton, the roomy tiered style and empire waist won't stick to your skin (an important consideration when the mercury soars) while the scoop neck and elasticized back will show just enough skin to still look hot. Pair this dress with dainty jewelry and strappy sandals and get out and enjoy those lazy summer days!

Lucy Sykes sundresses for girls

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Kids and Babies

At some point this summer, there will be a family reunion, wedding or christening. If the good news is that kids are invited, but the bad news is the idea of an itchy, stiff dress turning your little princess into a monster, then check out Lucy Sykes New York, and all the pretty sundresses.

Beautiful prints, lightweight cotton, and, for a special party dress, fairly reasonable prices -- certainly under $100. It's not Target, but it's also not Dior. The dresses have a classic shape, with twirly skirts and enough ruffles to be festive without looking like a square dancing costume. They are also refreshingly free of glitter or other Bratz-like flair.

Sykes and her doubtlessly beautiful family -- including sons Titus and Heathcliff -- spend weekends in the Hamptons and jet around the world to Paris, Milan and London. Lucy tries to infuse her dresses with the spirit of these places. We're not sure if she succeeds, but we can definitely imagine them on some little girls we know, playing tag while the grown ups sip celebratory cocktails. Now that's a summer party.

Flatter Your Figure: Summer Dresses for Busty Girls

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Flatter Your Figure

Summer poses several obstacles for busty girls, with the main obstacle being the bra issue. With all the strapless, spaghetti strap, and halter options out there, ladies with a large chest can find it frustrating to find a summer dress they love with a neckline that allows them to have the proper support. Let's face it -- strapless bras just aren't for everyone.

Never fear -- there are plenty of sweet, summery dresses out there that are completely flattering for you. We want to accentuate your curves, but we don't want the bust and the cleavage to be all anyone sees. Click through the gallery for some tips on what will work best for you!

Flatter Your Figure: Best summer dresses for pear shapes

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Flatter Your Figure

One of the best things about summer is getting to wear all those summer dresses. Honestly, what's easier? You throw on a cute little dress, a hot pair of sandals, and you're out the door! However, in order to look your very best, you'll want a cute little dress that flatters your cute little (or not so little) figure.

If you're a pear shape, meaning that your excess weight tends to gather around your butt and thighs rather than your upper body, you're in luck come summer. You might not be excited about shorts, but after you try on a few of the right summer dresses, you might not want to bother with shorts ever again. Check out the gallery to see what you should be wearing, and, of course, what you should avoid.

Crazy cravings: wooden platform sandals

Ah, summer time. Cookouts. Weekend afternoon parties. Long, warm evenings in friends' backyards. It's the season for sundresses, bare legs and pretty pedicures.

This adds up to a deep need for new sandals.

A sensible woman would get something neutral and comfortable, a pair you can wear anywhere, with anything.

Yeah. Well, good for them.

We want these crazy 4" 4.25" high, green, wooden wedge heels with a hole in the middle of them. They look moderately uncomfortable and totally hard to walk in. L-o-v-e at first sight.

They live at Target, and will come home with us for $19.99. At least we won't need to use rent money to pay for them, unlike the $700 peach suede Prada sandals smirking at us over at Neiman Marcus.

Dress of the Day: Roxy Little Miss Printed Babydoll

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

roxy little miss printed dressSince we have Monday off, I'm assuming that you're going to a BBQ of some sort today, and will be hanging out on the backyard patio with a tall iced tea (whether it's spiked is your call) until sundown. You need a cute little sundress!

Now normally, I think of Roxy as a fairly young brand, and usually associate it with surfing teenage girls, but for this Memorial Day weekend, Roxy's Little Miss Printed Babydoll seems so perfect, especially in this gorgeous red and white floral print. The cotton dress has a thin band to create an empire waist, and falls to a flirty mid-thigh length. At just $49.50 at Nordstrom, you won't feel bad if you get a little spot of BBQ sauce on it.

The dress also comes in the same print, but in green.

Dress of the Day: Paul Frank Tessa Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

paul frank tessa dressWas it just me or did everyone else want to go out and buy a pretty little dress this weekend? It was very clear that spring has finally sprung, and looking through my closet, I started to wonder what I was going to do with all the black, brown and charcoal gray sweaters, dresses, and heavy jeans I had in there. I need to make room for dresses and more dresses, especially this darling dress by Paul Frank.

The Tessa Dress comes in sky blue, and was a surprise for me because the only Paul Frank things I own have cartoon monkeys on them. The dress is just as whimsical (but minus the monkeys), with pink ribbon detailing at the gently scooped neck and on the skirt, as well as feminine eyelet at the hem.

The dress is available from LukaBlu for $86.

Wear a white sundress while you can

susana monaco white strapless dressHey, we're not saying you couldn't wear white into the fall and winter, but a white sundress might be a little iffy. Since it's all of, oh, about 100 degrees here in sunny southern California, it's the perfect time to snap a little white dress and wear it until you can't wear it no more. And there is certainly no need to spring for a super expensive fabric - cotton is the coolest fabric of them all. Bluefly has them all right here - summer dresses in white. My personal favorite? Why the strapless white eyelet minidress from Susana Monaco, called "Sarah." ($222)
