Sunscreen Challenge - The Best Blocks for Burn-Free Skin

Look tempting? Just don't forget the sunscreen! Photo: Ivan Prole/sxc.hu

I just got back from Belize. It was hot, ridiculously humid, and very sunny. I refer to myself as pigment-deprived -- meaning I am very fair-skinned and prone to sun damage -- so I needed the best sunscreen known to man that could withstand the tropical environment.

I put a bunch of them to the test. Here are my top skin-saving picks!

Best for Hiking: VMH Hypoallergenics Armada Sport 70 is super lightweight and stays put -- even in the stickiest of climates. I plan on using this one all summer, even if I'm just hanging out in the park.

Most Convenient: It's a tie! I love the very portable Mission Skincare Anti-Sting Sunscreen SPF 30+ Facestick for my lips, ears and around my eyes (my mom uses it on her whole face), but for reapplying on the go, nothing beats Aveeno Positively Ageless Sunblock Spray SPF 50.

Can a High SPF Irritate Your Skin? Erm, No

Filed under: Skin Care, Beauty Tips

Remember those bad after-school specials about safe sex, starring the lame guy who refused to wear a condom because it didn't "feel good?" He was an idiot.

Similarly foolish: The girl who refuses to practice safe sun because she claims high-powered sunscreen feels uncomfortable on her skin.

The fact is, if you suffer from irritation -- characterized by redness, dryness, itching, scaling, or swelling -- you're wearing the wrong one. It has nothing to do with a high SPF.

"It's very uncommon for sunscreen -- no matter how high the SPF - to irritate the skin," says Heidi Waldorf, an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai in Manhattan. "Any irritation is most likely caused by the base of the product, not from the active sunscreen ingredients."

An Open Rant to Kim Kardashian - REALLY?!

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Beauty Tips

Dear Kim,

This is picture is SO wrong on SO many levels.

First of all, you're a celebrity. Or at least you're trying to be. Sure, even Hollywood's shining stars may get a sunburn once in awhile, but they would never, ever, in a million years, publicize it to millions of people on Twitter (well, maybe Ashton Kutcher, but he's goofy and endearing, and you're not). If Scarlett Johansson toasted her tushie, do you think she'd post it for the world to see? Um, no.

Secondly, DO YOU KNOW HOW DAMAGING SUNBURNS ARE TO YOUR SKIN? Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. Every year there are more than one million cases diagnosed - that's more than the COMBINED incidences of breast, lung, prostate and colon cancers. Oh, and 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Don't believe me? Then check out The Skin Cancer Foundation, where all these fun facts came from.

And even if the term "cancer scare" doesn't resonate with you, I can certainly speak to you in a language that will. How about "You'll look 45 by the time you're 30?". Like a dried up raisin in a pile of plump Hollywood flesh. Gotcha, didn't I?

Annoying News About Antioxidants

It just goes to
show, no good deed goes unpunished.

If you've been diligently applying all of your antioxidant-infused products every a.m., there's a chance that they can turn on you once they're exposed to UV rays, and -- brace yourself -- become pro-oxidants, actually generating free radicals, according to Thomas Meyer, PhD of the Coppertone Solar Research Center.

This is a big deal, since it's free-radicals that break down our cell structure and - in short - make us look old. Antioxidants were the chemicals that were supposed to protect us.

Yikes. So does that mean all of our fancy antioxidant-rich products should be saved for nighttime? Not necessarily.

Low SPF Doesn't Protect Skin - StyleLIES

korresWe recently got to test out Korres' Wild Rose Cream SPF 6. While we absolutely loved the product, we couldn't wrap our heads around how SPF 6 could protect our skin. It got us thinking, "What's with all these products with low SPF and do they even protect?" So we went straight to the source and consulted with Korres' Director of Education.

Soothe your sunburn with Burt's Bees aloe and buttermilk lotion

San Francisco summers are freezing cold. We usually spend June and July so bundled up that the sun doesn't have a chance to burn any body parts. We must admit: sunscreen is often an afterthought.

Last week we sat through a two hour graduation ceremony in Boston during a heatwave and received a fierce reminder of it's importance: glowing, red, sunburned arms.

This was a bad burn, and Lubriderm wasn't going to cut it, so we headed to Walgreens for aloe vera gel. Luckily we found something even better: Burt's Bees Soothingly Sensitive Aloe & Buttermilk Lotion.

Tip of the day: Concert gear & supplies

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Jeans, Cosmetics, Skin Care, Style Tip of the Day

We had a great weekend. We danced our butts off, sang our hearts out and probably had one too many beers at the Glow in the Dark tour in illy Philly on Saturday night. But as always, we were thinking of our dear reader's and before we went in to enjoy the likes of Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco (heart!), N.E.R.D. and the brilliant Kayne, we took a tour of tailgate heaven to see what's hot and what's not for concert gear this year.

Here is a breakdown of the ideal concert attire:

Tip of the day: The right way to buy and apply Sunscreen

Filed under: Skin Care, Style Tip of the Day

Little did we know there was a correct way to apply sunscreen (or swunscweam as our daughter calls it). But don't worry, we did a little detective work and figured out the 5 W's for you.

The Who and the What. Of course we're talking sunscreen here. The first step is, obviously, you want to slather it on anytime you're in the sun. That's a given. Just a tiny bit of sun exposure each day can really add up overtime. But did you know that you've got to apply 30 minutes before going outside for the best results? Yes it's true. And again each time you are active (What!? People actually do stuff other than layout on the beach?). If you have a protective hat or clothing, even better.

Spray-on sunscreen easy enough for pale people to use

As pale folk, we are well aware of the myriad dangers of sun exposure. But we hate to get our hands all yucky with gloppy, gritty, weird smelling sunscreen.

Plus, it's so easy to miss a spot when we're rubbing in lotion. That spells disaster in the form of organically shaped sunburn art, usually across the backs of your knees, thighs or that little spot where every bra strap rubs all day long.
