David Bowie lends Ziggy Stardust outfit to Brit-pop exhibit

Filed under: Vintage and Retro, Celebrities with Style

It's our firm belief that spandex outfits that retain superpowers should never be tossed around irresponsibly like a piece of Hard Rock Cafe trash. Would Superman lend his cape out to just anyone? No, he wouldn't. The only reason James Brown's "Sex " jumpsuits came onto the market was because his estate needed some quick cash. So, why is David Bowie lending his Ziggy Stardust outfit to an exhibition called The British Musical Experience?

Probably because Harvey Goldsmith -- one of Britain's most legendary concert promoters, asked him to. Goldsmith has also rounded up Annie Lennox's Union Jack outfit as well as some guitars and junk from stars like Oasis' Noel Gallagher (who was recently attacked onstage by a crazed fan in Toronto). If it's in the interest of consolidating Bowie's power and influence in the very incestuous world of concert promotions. Still, the whole thing brings to mind one question: isn't it about time for a Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders reunion tour?

How to work a cape like Posh, not Superman (or Brooke Shields)

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Every year, as spring approaches, my eyes start wandering toward the less bulky items in my closet. I'm tired of my sweaters, done with scarves, and so over jackets. Fortunately, I live in Florida, so there are plenty of days where I can wear a kicky dress and cardi and be plenty warm. But what about those of you living in colder climates? What can be done?

Never fear, Posh is here! In a cape!

As Mrs. Beckham shows us (and as Brooke Shields and Lucy Liu fail to show us), a cape can be a fabulously chic way to ward off the winter chill when you just can't bare to wear your winter coat for another day. However, it can also backfire horribly. Here's how you can pull off Posh's look and keep your cape from becoming fashion kryptonite:

Dress like a superhero

Wish you could take on the bad guys, run like the wind, and leap tall buildings in a single bound?

While these looks from Bape may not help you fight evil villains, they'll make you look like a superhero -- which, I think, is equally as important. Teaming up with Marvel Comics, the design house has created a range of Batman, Superman and The Flash pieces -- including the Batman hoodie (with ear pieces!) pictured above. You can now pay homage to the inherent coolness of men with freakish speed and strength -- plus, the range fits in nicely with the emergence of geek chic, that's all the rage with 20somethings everywhere. Bonus.

Unfortunately, you'd have to be Bruce Wayne to afford any of the pieces. The Flash sweatshirt retails at $351, and the Batman hoodie will set you back $439 -- which is more than a little out of my price range.

That said, the design is pretty straightforward. Not that I'd advocate stealing someone else's idea, but with an iron, a red sweatshirt, and a Flash patch from your local comic book shop, it looks like you could make your own at 10th of the price. Just a thought.

Superman is dead, but Kryptonite lives on

I dare say that when the Superman comic was created back in 1932, Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster never imagined that their hero Superman would die and that his one weakness would turn out to be real.

But both have happened. In 1992, Superman was killed off, and now in 2007, Kryptonite has been discovered in a Serbian mine.

The mineral was discovered by Dr. Chris Stanley, a researcher at London's Natural History Museum. The real Kryptonite isn't green and doesn't glow, but it does bear a strong resemblance to the chemical composition described in the film Superman Returns.

Not a sworn Superman fan, Stanley actually discovered the compositional resemblance to the famed compound while searching the web. He told BBC: "Towards the end of my research I searched the web using the mineral's chemical formula -- sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide -- and was amazed to discover that same scientific name, written on a case of rock containing kryptonite stolen by Lex Luthor from a museum in the film Superman Returns.

Pretty crazy, isn't it?

Trick-or-treat Carrie Bradshaw style

Filed under: Holiday Style, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Sarah Jessica Parker, widely known for her role as fashionista Carrie Bradshaw on the HBO series Sex And The City, is trick-or-treating for the children's charity UNICEF.

SJP swears that her earliest memory is trick-or-treating with her siblings in support of UNICEF as a young girl. At a charity event this past Wednesday, Parker surrounded herself with excited, costumed children to support the fund-raising initiative.

Although Ms. Parker won't be dressing up this year - she says she "can't abide" costumes and feels too old - she reports that her son, James, is having a tough time deciding whether he wants to be Buzz Lightyear, Superman, or Skeleton Man. Parker says she will be happy to carry the UNICEF box and trick-or-treat with James, and (I'm sure) look Halloween-fabulous in her own glamorous way.
