Catching up with Patrick Dermarchelier

Filed under: Style in the News

One of our favorite fashion writers, International Herald Tribune's Suzy Menkes, has been on a tear lately -- interviewing some of fashion's most important players like makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath, and most recently, famed photographer Patrick Dermarchelier. If you've ever managed to watch that cult film known as The Devil Wears Prada, the photog being named dropped constantly by Miranda Presley is none other than Mr. Demarchelier.

In real life, though, the icon shoots exclusively for Conde Nast titles, but more frequently with Vogue than anyone else. Menkes caught up with the legend a couple of days ago during Paris Fashion Week to discuss his new exhibition on display at the Petit Palais museum. Watch, learn, and swoon over all of the beautiful images.

They look like hooker shoes

There is just something really amazing about listening to fashion critic Suzy Menkes' voice. We're not sure if it's because of her posh accent or the precision in which she breaks downs all of the latest trends. But when she speaks, we are more often than not going to listen.

This week, Suzy tackles the new heights the footwear industry is currently reaching. Literally. Some of the most popular pumps come in at a record six and seven inches high. Ouch! We want to reach for our Dr. Scholl's gel inserts just typing that. Anyways, Suzy says the new power pumps resemble those that hookers wore in Venice three centuries ago. Her words not ours. Now, bask in the awesomeness that is Suzy and her epic slideshow video.

Bleeding for fashion

"The dress is a rousing red, the color stroked on a white surface. But just as this rose-sweet outfit passes out of sight, there is a frisson of the horror movies that inspired it. Why is the lacy hose wrapped round the legs like a torn spider's web? Are those toothy fangs edging the pristine white shoes? And isn't this colorful dress drenched in blood?"

Karl, can we play with your toys?

Filed under: Style in the News

As we've mentioned, our economy kind of sucks right now.

In fact, our dollar is so weak that hoards of British birds and blokes are flocking to New York City to take advantage of their fortified Euros and British pounds at places like Barneys and Saks.

Amy Winehouse: troubled singer, style icon, and fashion muse?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Although Amy Winehouse may be fighting a few addiction problems; married to a man who is currently incarcerated for trying to pervert the course of justice; and has a skin infection that seems to be eating the sides of her face -- the fashion industry can't seem to get enough of the troubled pop star.

Last season, the Kaiser dedicated his whole Pre-Fall collection for Chanel to the soul songstress. With Irina Lazareanu crooning in the background, the models strutted down the runway sporting Amy's signature bee-hive hairstyle and thick-winged eyeliner.

In February, Carine Roitfeld -- editor-in-chief of French Vogue -- turned supermodel Isabeli Fontana into a Winehouse doppelanger for the "Bad Girls" issue.

And this Spring, the love fest is stronger than ever -- leading International Herald Tribune fashion writer Suzy Menkes to create this hysterical slideshow of all the designers who were inspired by Amy this season.

Watch and learn.
