Swarovski Crystallized Concept Store - Jewelry Your Way

Swarovski's new Crystallized Concept Store in Soho, New York City allows shoppers to create their own brilliant pieces of jewelry.

The 5,000-square-foot flagship, which opened on Thursday to much fanfare, is a huge playground for DIY fans. (And some of Hollywood's hottest at its opening soiree.)

You can choose from over 2,000 "elements" -- including crystals (of course!), gems and pearls -- at the "Library of Light," where items are conveniently categorized by color, size and cut.

But with all the mind-boggling choices, a girl needs a little help. Luckily, Swarovski provides a computer program to assist shoppers in determining their design preferences.

Michael Jackson was playing on high rotation Thursday night at the celebrity opening of SoHo's new Swarovski "Crystallized" store, which took place (every party planner's nightmare!) just hours after the King of Pop's shocking death.

However the "pop" of champagne did wonders to soothe the crowd, at the party hosted by "Gossip Girl's" Blake Lively and attended by Evan Rachel Wood, Chloe Sevigny and Lucy Liu.

The 5,000-foot new concept store at 499 Broadway seems like an amazing corporate extravagance in this battered economy. A glittering, two-story tall chandelier hangs in the stairwell of the serene, crystal-and-white interior which evokes a better, future era -- as if we'd all been transported in a Bedazzled Austrian time machine to the end of the recession.

Nadja Swarovski Blogs About the CFDA Awards

On Monday night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America celebrated its own with a lavish gala held at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan. Among the sea of chic attendees was Nadja Swarovski whose namesake company underwrote the entire event. Here Swarovski offers her thoughts on the evening, and why she avoided the all exclusive after-parties.

What a magical evening! It was great to see how the CFDA Awards have emerged from a small, intimate setting to something on a much grander scale. And of course I love seeing the once young and emerging designers winning in the "adult" categories.

I'm so happy for Proenza Schouler! Their partnership with the Valentino Group really exposed their business to new possibilities and to factories and resources -- and now they've won the Accessories category. It's nice to see their hard work rewarded. I see the future of fashion as being about collaborations and partnerships.

Exclusive! Jason Wu's sketch of Nadja Swarovski's dress.

The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) is readying for its annual fete -- which honors the industry's finest -- taking place this Monday night.

Among the haute fashionistas in attendance will be Nadja Swarovski, whose namesake company is underwriting the festivities.

And on Tuesday, Swarovski will be blogging for StyleList exclusively about her experiences at this year's awards.

In the interim, she has added to the increasing excitement by sharing this sketch (right) of what she will be wearing -- a one-of-a-kind black silk faille sheath dress created exclusively for her by Jason Wu.

It features butterfly embroidery and is crystallized with jet Swarovski beads that took 60 hours to stitch onto the garment.

Check back on Tuesday to find out how this special creation fared during fashion's big night.

Mark and Karen have been crafting each piece of wearable art jewelry by hand since 2001, incorporating Swarovski crystals and 14-karat gold-filled and sterling silver wire into their work. Fergie is the Rockefeller tree star

Fergie is full of holiday cheer! Yesterday, Fergie unveiled the 550 pound, 9.5 foot Swarovski Star adorned with over 25,000 Swarovski crystals that will sit atop the famed Rockefeller Center Holiday tree. Watch the above video to see the unveiling (wait for it).

You gotta wonder how much they pay celebrities just to say "Um...I'm famous. Photograph me by this." Maybe they didn't pay her for her humps this time, though; it was for charity.

Limited edition Swarovski trunks for those who want to be hated

Samsonite plus SwarovskiEvery once in a while, a product so outrageously extravagant and loud comes out that it boggles the mind that anyone would purchase it, braving the fiery death glares that they will surely face from strangers. A team-up between Samsonite and Swarovski have come up with such a product... Behold, the Samsonite Black Label trunk, covered in crystals and -- get this -- only 30 are in existence. Now, this thing is massive, so there's no way to subtly flash it like it's darling diamond earrings hiding under your hair until you pull it up. This thing is immediately and absolutely in-your-face and begging to be kicked over and smashed in a jealous rampage.

Dior launches luxury $5,000 mobile phone

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

Joining the Chanel fishing rod, and the diamond-studded digital camera on the list of ridiculously overpriced luxury goods that do nothing special at all, Dior has unveiled its $5,000 MyDior cellphone. Dior's luxury phone boasts a touch screen, camera, and a Swarovski crystal face plate. Apparently, the phone is targeted specifically for the Russian and Chinese markets (where people throw away their hard-earned money?).

Dior is teaming up with French tech firm ModeLabs Group to produce the couture handset, of which they expect to sell 10,000. Wow -- that's an easy $50M. Aside from Swarovski face plate -- which we agree is a nice touch -- the My Dior phone only offers one other unique feature: a tiny micro-phone that allows you to leave the Swarovski-studded handset in your pocket. We have no idea why you'd want to leave a $5,000 designer phone in your purse/pocket. Think we'll stick with the technically superior and less expensive status symbol -- the iPhone.

Why aren't you wearing this? Cosmic Cuff

There is nothing wrong with an accessory that's subtle and delicate -- there are plenty of times when that's exactly what an outfit needs. However, we find more occasions on which we'd prefer to wear a piece that brings a little more to the table -- the type of piece that can make a stranger take a second look.

Designer of the year nominees are out!

Filed under: Style in the News

The Council of Fashion Designers of America have announced their nominees for designer of the year! For menswear designer of the year Michael Bastian, Thom Browne, and Tom Ford are nominated. Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors are all up for the accessory category. And for the biggie, the womenswear category, we have Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler, and Marc Jacobs.

I'll admit that I was totally shocked to see Marc Jacobs on the list. Just to put it simply, nobody really liked his Spring/Summer '08 collection. Check out what I had to say about Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton here. I really felt like he lost his magic touch this year. His mojo, if you will, is gone. But apparently the CFDA disagrees, and well, we all know who has more influence in the fashion industry. Me, obviously.

And I'll tell you who I'd like to see win -- Francisco Costa. He's an Ashley Olsen fave and I love him too. This year he kept the lines and designs of his clothing really simple and the result was gorgeous. His collection was fantastic. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) Francisco just won last year, so I doubt that they'll give the big award to him again.

Also up for grabs is the Swarovski Award. This is given to a designer who shows a lot of promise. It's basically a scholarship paid out in the form of cash and Swarovski crystals. For womenswear we have Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte, Thakoon Panichgul, and Alexander Wang and in the menswear category Patrik Ervell, Tim Hamilton, and Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders are duking it out.

Browse through the gallery to see the designers' work and tell me who you think should win in each category!
