Five dresses - the sweater dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

We've patiently been waiting for fall to arrive, and now that the air is finally turning crisp we've been rewarded with a most deliciously soft trend for fall: The sweater dress.

We love that there's such a large variety of sweater dresses to choose from right now, and of course we love the sheer versatility of the sweater dress itself. Wear it barelegged in early fall and add tights and layers as the weather cools. You can even wear it as a tunic over your favorite jeans! It's rare that a trend is as versatile as this, so we're riding this one until the weather warms up.

Wrap dresses are the secret weapon of the well-dressed woman: They're sexy, versatile, and timeless. If you thought a sweater dress is nothing more than an oversized sweater, this wrap dress by cashmere experts Magaschoni will prove you wrong. We love the cherry red color, and the fact that throwing this on is as easy as wrapping your favorite bathrobe around your waist.

Wear this, and it will look like you're just wearing a pink sweater and black skirt, but in reality this is a body-hugging sweater dress. One look at the back (pictured after the jump) and you will see how the row of buttons goes all the way down to the "skirt" - fooled you, didn't it?

This dress is great if you have a tight midsection because there won't be any unnecessary bulges from layering the sweater and skirt (or worse, trying to tuck it in!) but if you're like the rest of us and need some help, there's always Spanx. Good thing tights are in this year!

Dress of the day - Maggy London cowl neck sweater dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

A simple and elegant sweater dress is a must-have this Fall, and this cowl neck dress from Maggy London will serve you well in a variety of situations. It caught our eye because it would work very well with a pair of patterned tights we already own - the simple lines of this dress won't clash with the subtle checkered pattern on our legs.

$138 available at Nordstrom

Dress of the day - Turtleneck sweater dress from Victoria's Secret

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

This dress is a wardrobe basic - on first glance it looks somewhat boring but you'll turn to it year after year because it's so easy to update. It's made of cotton, so you can add as many layers as you need to keep warm without overheating. We'd purchase one in black or cocoa and go crazy with the accesories.

At $45, it costs less than many Victoria's Secret bras - so stock up!

Dress of the Day: Joie She's in Love Cashmere Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

joie shes in love cashmere tunic dressThe name of the dress is "She's in Love," and that might be because I'm head over heels for Joie's sweater dress, or it might just be because I'm in love!

Eh. It's the dress.

Joie's She's in Love dress is perfectly warm for mid-January because it's made of an ivory-colored cashmere and wool blend. The deep V-neck is cut off with a slight gather just before it gets too risque to wear the dress to Sunday night dinner with the famil. The long sleeves let out to bells, which matches the slight fare in the skirt.

The dress is on sale at Amazon for $129.99, which is quite a deal given that the dress can do double duty as a tunic top over leggings.

Dress of the Day: Whipping Gale Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

anthropologie whipping gale dressWe're still hot on sweater dresses, and the Whipping Gale Sweater Dress from Anthropologie makes your wardrobe a little more interesting than a cowl neck, cable-knit, or turtleneck. The merino wool dress is made of large swatches of charcoal-colored fabric in varying rib-widths and textures. A dainty pointelle bib is what pulls all the pieces together. Given that it almost looks like a pilgrim's dress, this might be something appropriate to wear at Thanksgiving dinner in lieu of something less stylish like, um, a sweatshirt with a turkey applique on the front.

Available from Anthropologie for $298.

Dress of the Day: BCBG Fair Isle Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

bcbg fair isle sweater dressWeekend wear begs for comfort, and right now, there is nothing more comfortable than...a pair of sweats.

Obviously, you can't be seen running about town, even if you're doing "errands" in that pair of tattered sweatpants and college-emblazoned hoodie, no matter how much you try to justify it by saying you support your alma mater's football team! Put on a sweater dress! The Fair Isle Sweater Dress from BCBG has all the warmth of a Fair Isle sweater for the chillier days, the comfort of knits, and of course, the style of a dress that allows you to "accessorize" with tights and boots.

Available at Nordstrom.

Dress of the Day: Gap Cowl Neck Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

gap cowl neck sweater dressMaybe it's the weather here in southern California -- cold, gray, and rainy. Or maybe it's the mood I'm in. Whatever it is, I am feeling extremely "home-y" It's all I can do to get back into bed with a cup of hot coffee and a few magazines.

However, there are things to be done, and since I do have to go out into the world, the Cowl Neck Sweater Dress from Gap is pretty good motivation. The knit dress is made from a cotton and angora blend, has long sleeves with exaggerated cuffs, and a ribbed cowl neck. The hem hits right at mid thigh, so if it were a "usual" warm day in LA, I'd just wear the dress as is, but since the weather is as it is, I am thinking some charcoal heather tights and boots.

The Cowl Neck Sweater Dress is $69 at Gap.

Dress of the Day: Karoo by Mark Eisen Banded Turtleneck

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

mark eisen banded turtleneck dressApparently, it's not just the people of LA who are fickle.

It's the weather, too.

Last week, I believe there was a day that was well over 85 degrees. This weekend, I felt like I was living in the North Pole (minus the snow). It's still extremely cold, so I'm totally feeling the 100% cashmere turtleneck sweater dress by Karoo by Mark Eisen. The ¾-length sleeves are loose and wide, giving it a slightly different look from your regular turtleneck sweater, and the large banded hemline lets the dress for a tunic (they really are all the same, aren't they?).

The dress comes in mushroom (shown) and black, for $352 at PinkMascara.com.

Dress of the Day: Acrobat Tunic Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

acronat tunic sweater dressThank goodness it's the weekend, y'all! I don't know about you, but for some reason, I have a list of things to do that's about two dozen things, and all of them are errands about town.

The Hooded Tunic Sweater by Acrobat is perfect for getting all that stuff done. The sweater is made from a khaki-colored mid-weight silk-cashmere knit. It's hooded with an adjustable drawstring, and like a regular sweater, has banded, rib-knit trimmed cuffs and hem. It's a tunic, so it might be a little short to wear by itself, but pull on a warm pair of tights, thick socks overs that, and a pair of flat, comfortable boots .

Originally, the dress was $172, down to $83.20 at Bluefly.

Dress of the Day: DVF Kody Cable Knit Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

dvf kody cable knit sweater dressLike ShopBop says, "We've yet to find a piece by DVF that we don't love."

The Kody Cable Knit Sweater Dress is a departure from the usual wrap dress in wild prints from Ms. von Furstenberg that make me fall all over myself.

The dress is basically a very long, wool and cashmere blend cable knit sweater with six buttons at the collar (not that you'd button all of them). The edges are thick, ribbed banding. It has short sleeves to keep it functional when you're banging away on your laptop, but it's a thick sweater that can be worn with tights and knee-high boots (I might even say a pair of Uggs could work here), will keep you warm.

The dress is $415 at ShopBop.

Dress of the Day: Cowl Neck Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

mizrahi cowl neck sweater dressThursday is the new Friday.

At least in my world it is.

That means after work, I like to twirl about town with girlfriends as if it were Friday night. Since we really do have to work the next day, the night starts and ends early. No time to go home and change! The Cowl Neck Sweater Dress by Isaac Mizrahi for Target is perfect because its 3/4 length sleeves make it functional at the desk, and the cowl neck sits up modestly. However, once the clock hits five, you can pull that cowl neck down on either side and make it off-the-shoulder. Smokin'. Change your conservative pearl earrings to a pair of sparkling chandeliers, throw your cute little ballet flats into the back seat and slip into your leopard print stiletto heels. You are ready to turn the town upside down!

At least, until 10:30.

The Cowl Neck Sweater Dress is $39.99 at Target.

Dress of the Day: Foley+Corinna Sweater Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

foley+corinna sweater tunicThis dress is only for the lioness-hearted because it screams "Look at me!" Did I say "screams?" I meant "shrieks."

Foley+Corinna's Lurex Sweater Tunic is short. It's shiny. And um, it's short. The tunic features a cowl neck, sparkle detail throughout, three-quarter length dolman sleeves. The dress comes in solid gold and solid blue, but if you're going to go out, you may as well go all out, and get the dress in big, broad, blue and gold stripes. Feign modesty with a pair of sheer, sparkling tights, but don't you dare cover up those legs in a pair of knee high boots. Just some sky-high stilettos and you are all set.

Of course, if you're not a brave, you can really wear the Lurex Sweater tunic as a tunic over jeans.

Foley+Corinna's Lurex Sweater Tunic is available from ShopBop for $238. The blue and gold stripe is exclusively sold there.

Dress of the Day: Bebe Boatneck Cable Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

bebe boatneck cable dressYesterday, I had a wedding, and I dressed up for the evening occasion by dressing down, of sorts. I wore pants. Today, if I were going to the post-nuptial casual luncheon (I overdosed on bridal bliss already), I'd dress up for the slightly dressed-down occasion with the Boatneck Cable Dress by Bebe. It's finally starting to feel like fall here in southern California, so warm and cozy sweater dressing seems appropriate. The acrylic/wool/nylon blend has metallic thread running through it to give it a little sparkle and the boatneck makes it not too stuffy.

The dress comes in cream and is $119 on the Bebe website.
