New York Fashion Week: Herve Leger swimwear

Herve Leger, cult maker of those impossible-to-walk-in bandage dresses, unveiled its Spring '09 collection at fashion week on Sunday.

Designed by Max Azria, who acquired the company in 1999, the collection was everything you might expect from a brand name that's synonymous with sex appeal.

This year, some of the standout pieces were the slashed-up swimsuits, in shades of rose, black and electric tangerine.

If these suits work the same wonders as Leger's minidresses, we expect sales to go swimmingly.

Saturday night's Ank by Mirla Sabino show was the highlight of the week, and second to none as far as quality, easy to wear swimwear for the real woman. Every suit was something you'd let your sister wear, but also would love if your friend's sister wore it, but please don't get those two confused.

I was running around for nearly six hours by this time shooting for the sponsors, so it was quite a relief to watch a couple shows towards the end of the night.

The Ank show had a great variety of suits, that like the one above, featured a little extra fabric to play with, whether it was covering up part of the body, or folding under to show a little more.

The slide show highlights four looks with the same color to show the variety which the designer gives in her 2008 Cruise line.

I was running back and forth from five different things, so I didn't have too much time to observe the suits the models were wearing.

The designer, Syla Cachay, is of Peruvian descent, which is brought out in her selection of prints. The former Marc Jacobs intern used bright contrasting colors in big and loud shapes which she describes as "Hippy Couture."

I talked to a couple of the models who were wearing the brand, they told me that it was the best fitting suit they'd worn all day.

Tommy Bahama is no longer merely your dad's cigar smoking, flowered Caribbean shirts that swim on even the largest of men. Last night, the fashion house unveiled their new line of women's swimsuits, and I have to say that I am impressed. Large flowered prints with sexy but sporty cuts -- this line will sure to be a hit for cougars and young chicks alike.

The best part of the show was that it was done on the beach with guests watching from campfire benches.

I got to watch the show in between the two backstage jobs I was doing (more of that to come).

This show was the only one of the evening which I though geared towards an American audience. Something that Jane Smith from the Midwest would wear on vacation. The line didn't really symbolize the Miami crowd, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Tommy Bahama must know its audience.

I have a gallery of my favorite shots. Take a look and tell me if you agree.

Tip of the day: Coverups

Filed under: Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Style Tip of the Day

What should you wear on your walk to the beach? Certainly not just your swimsuit and nothing else! *shock, gasp, horror* You need something more elaborate than that, something to cover up your nearly naked body until you arrive on the sand where it is acceptable. A "cover up" perhaps? Bingo!

Hot women in bikinis turn men into morons

Filed under: Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie

Ever been at the beach and wondered why your man was in a fog? Though normally quick witted, he suddenly can't string even the simplest sentences together without tripping over words -- he's indecisive, and his brain wanders constantly like he's been sneaking sips of whiskey. So what gives?

According to a recent scientific study, it turns out all the boobs are making him stupid. This probably isn't news to you, but now it's been proven officially in a report titled: "Bikinis Instigate Generalized Impatience in Intertemporal Choice." (Read: "Bikinis make dudes dumb.")

Maui Film Festival Day 1

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style

I flew into Wailea Maui on Tuesday afternoon to gorgeous 81 degree and sunny for the Maui Film Festival. Founded by Barry Rivers, the festival is five day outdoor celebration of independent film. They have huge screens set up along the beaches and golf courses where the films are screened. It's not like Venice or Cannes where snobby film junkies don tuxedos and strut along red carpets. Here Tommy Bahama subs for Dior and the red carpet is the fine Hawaiian sand. Celebrities attending will include Virginia Madsen, Pierce Brosnan, Dennis Quaid and Felicity Huffman on top of local celebrities like Laird Hamilton.

I went to the opening festivities at the Fairmont Kea Lani where movie goers washed down their Kobe beef with Heinekens and cranberry cosmopolitans.

Then I walked up the street to the Future Home of Baccarat Wailea Resort & Residences golf course, a spectacular 3-course club, where the driving range was converted to a theater under the sky to see the enormous movie theatre they have constructed.

Barry Rivers, the festival's founder and director, arranged for the energy all the projectors will use to be off-set with solar power. Another example of the film industry's "Going Green."

I'll be here a few more days, so come back for more posts.

Tip of the day: Suit up part 4, Tall

Filed under: Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Style Tip of the Day

Oh those lanky, leggy girls who can wear just about anything. Yes, that means the lucky few like Whitney Port, Blake Lively, Paris Hilton, and the fierce (and seriously scary) Naomi Campbell.

We dedicate the last "Suit up" installment to those long ladies that we secretly despise for their limby... uh... ness.

Will Justin Timberlake bring back the Speedo? He hopes not

Filed under: Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Men, Celebrities with Style

Ladies, in case you haven't heard, there's at least one reason to see the new Love Guru movie: JT is in it, and he's wearing a Speedo! While the film may otherwise look completely awful, at least you'll have something to focus on in between shots of Mike Myers pulling faces and making stupid jokes.

Timberlake talks about this foray into revealing men's swimwear in the above interview. Turns out he wasn't very comfortable showing so much skin, and is hoping that this little stunt won't bring skimpy swimming trunks back into fashion.

We couldn't agree more. No one wants to see the outline of your manly bits on a nice day at the beach.

But maybe we're wrong? If you've got it...should you flaunt it?

Should Speedos make a comeback?

Tip of the Day: Suit up part 1; Buff

Why do celebrities always look so damn good in their bathing suits? Personal trainers, in-house chefs, and puking aside, they look good because their stylist dresses them every day (damn them). But you don't need a stylist. No, no child; that's what you have us for.

Here are a few tips for the svelte, bootylicious, buff, and lanky among us. This will be broken down into a four part section, so if you don't see your body type today, check back with us tomorrow k?

Billabong Fashion Show

Thursday I shot inside all access at Billabong's Design for Humanity Fashion Show that benefited the Surfrider Foundation. I roamed on the carpet on Vine Street until the models walked down the runway to music spun by DJ Aoki. Prog rock revivalists MGMT played to a packed house.

The Surfrider Foundation is an environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the world's waves and beaches through conservation, so beach apparel was the focus.

Celebrity designers included Cory Kennedy, Lisa Kline, Jenny Han, Amber Valetta, Joy Bryant, and Charlotte Ronson. There were some throwbacks to the seventies and a tribute to the American flag to name a couple trends that Billabong hopes will catch on for Summer.

Celebrities Adrien Grenier, Cameron Richardson, Juliette Lewis, Maynard James Keenan of Tool, John Legend were on hand to catch a glimpse of the show.

Many of us women out there suffer during the summer because we don't have stems like a supermodel. Unfortunately, you can't think your legs long but you can create the illusion that they're a mile long with the right clothes.
