Coach summer 08' collection

Ah, yes. Coach. Our middle school supplier of leather handbags and adorable wristlets. We temporarily fell out of love with the brand once they began covering practically everything they created in cheesy logos, but all has been forgiven with their most recent collection.

Still churning out totes and satchels with big and bold "C's" on them, Coach has made a legitimate effort to make chic and classic leather goods for all those not wanting to appear as if they were walking advertisement for the brand.

Rihanna wants you to stand under her umbrella

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrities with Style

Most musicians know a good thing when they see it. And by "good thing", I mean "way to milk the cow completely bone-dry." Rihanna, riding the massive success of her single "Umbrella," is doing just that by joining forces with Totes to release her own line of -- you guessed it -- umbrellas. The Rihanna umbrellas don't look particularly different from normal umbrellas. There's a pink one with her name plastered on the side and a black one with pink frilly bits that reminds me of some of her outfits, but that's about the extent of their uniqueness. At least the line is not outrageously priced, hovering somewhere in the $18 area.

For originality's sake, I wouldn't mind seeing an umbrella that plays the "Eh eh eh eh" part of Rihanna's song every time it is opened, even though that would probably drive me insane. At least it'd be something new.

"I'm Not a Plastic Bag" backlash

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News

Fashion mavens and Whole Foods shoppers have undoubtedly noticed the surprisingly trendy "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" totes designed by Anya Hindmarch. For whatever reason, these bags have become the most-recent "must have" item, and hundreds -- if not thousands -- of fashionistas have been lining up outside Whole Foods stores, or paying as much as 200 times the retail price to purchase the totes online.

The frenzy has been so intense that the bags have been banned in China after several women were trampled yesterday while trying to purchase them.

In response to this insanity, the kids at Fashion Indie have created the hysterical "I'm Not a Douche Bag." Sure, it may not be as cute as Hindmarch's tote, but, as noted by its designers, the "Douche Bag" is "just as eco friendly" and a whole lot funnier.

Ask StyleList: A double duty beach bag?

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Ask StyleList

StyleList reader Sara recently sent us an email, asking for our help in preparation for a cruise she's taking in May: "I'm looking for a bag that I can use as a carry on, beach bag, etc. while on the trip." With all the options out there, that's easy, but Sara also threw in one narrowing factor - since she's spending all that money on the cruise, the bag has to be affordable!

Well, Sara, I did a little poking around and came up with a few bags, since I'm not totally sure what your personal style is like.

From Land's End, there's the Lighthouse Tote, which is perfect for the beach because its 1680-denier nylon is water-resistant, and works well for travel because of its durable construction. The bag comes in multiple colors, and is available from the Land's End website for $29.50.

Maxwell Silver makes a fetching tote with a slightly flip-flopped design from a standard bag -- the single handle goes of the top of the bag like basket. The bag is made of 100% cotton and linen in a print called garden jonquil. The bag is $190.

Wednesday, I Want: Isabella Fiore Heart Tattoo Print Tote

isabella fiore heart tattoo print toteEarlier this summer, I was in love with a tattoo-print handbag from Isabella Fiore that got the rocker-chic in me all tied up in knots. However, I think I am loving this bag, the Heart Tattoo-Print Tote, even more because, while the lady in me loves a rose, I have always had a fondness for the curves of a heart-shape -- even if the heart on this bag is all wrapped up in chains.

Now I know that the bag looks a little wild and crazy with the tattoo-print, the studs, and the large grommets with chains hanging out of them, but I have a strange attraction to it. Imagine wearing a tight black turtleneck sweater, a simple black pencil skirt, maybe some knee high boots, then rockin' it all out with this handbag? See what I mean?

The bag is $675 at Neiman Marcus.
