Are Facials Useless?

Filed under: Skin Care, Beauty Tips

There's nothing like a day at the spa. A massage helps you feel refreshed, a mani/pedi gets you looking polished, and a facial will keep your face looking gorgeous and youthful, right? Not so, according to many dermatologists who are now speaking out about the unrealistic expectations many women have about facials.

DIY Facial

Just because we're in a recession doesn't mean your skin has to suffer. Skip those pricey spa trips by indulging in your own at-home facials, and piggy bank what would otherwise cost you hundreds of dollars. Read on as celebrity facialists guide you through all of the essential steps, with tips customized for your skin type.

    1. CLEANSE

Fill your sink with lukewarm water and add a few drops of essential oil - lavender for normal to dry skin and eucalyptus for normal to oily skin. Drench a terry face cloth in the relaxing aromatic mixture and press it against your face five to 10 times for a gentle cleansing, suggests celebrity facialist Ole Henriksen.

    2. STEAM

Lean over a large bowl of boiling water, drape a clean towel over your head and position your face about 10-12 inches above the steam for several minutes. The warm water vapor softens pores so that your skin can reap the full benefits of the treatments to come, says Elena Arboleda, Head Aesthetician of NY's Mario Badescu Spa.

    3. STEAM: EXPERT TIP

If you're acne-prone, steaming is a critical step to unclogging pores. Add a drop of tea tree oil to your water to disinfect it, and then dip a washcloth into the very warm water once you've finished steaming. Lay the cloth on your face for several minutes for a deeper steam treatment, says celebrity esthetician Kate Somerville.

    4. EXFOLIATE

Mix equal parts finely ground sugar and sesame oil into a paste, and apply it to your face with upward, outward circular motions. "This scrub provides all the benefits of natural AHAs for exfoliation while the oil nourishes and hydrates with a smooth glide across the skin," says Henriksen. This recipe is gentle enough for all skin types.

    5. EXFOLIATE: EXPERT TIP

If you prefer a store-bought scrub, "Look for one that uses natural enzymes that digest skin cells, or one with spherical beads that are round and lift cells off the surface without injury to the skin," says Somerville. If you're super sensitive, you can use plain yogurt instead - lactose, the sugar found in dairy products, is a natural exfoliant.

    6. MASK

"I love a plain honey mask because it's great for taking redness out of skin, it kills infection with natural anti-bacterial properties, it's soothing and hydrating, and will work on all skin types," says Henriksen. Apply either pure organic or sage honey to your face, keeping safe distance away from the hairline.

    8. MASK: EXPERT TIP

If your skin could use a refreshing and invigorating mask, mix avocado with ground flax seeds and apply as a 15 minute treatment to restore moisture and essential nutrients back into the skin, says Somerville.

    8. DON'T FORGET YOUR EYES

Roll sliced cucumber into a long strip of gauze. Place it over your eyes as you lie down and relax with your mask on for 10 minutes. Cucumber de-puffs eyes and the juices saturate perfectly through the gauze, says Henriksen. Relax, breathe, enjoy and then rinse off.

    9. MOISTURIZE

Apply your favorite moisturizer to your perfectly cleansed, exfoliated and prepped face. "Don't forget to finish with a lip balm. I love Julie Hewitt's Camelia Lip Balm - we use it at our Hollywood clinic," says Somerville.

Kérastase Specifique - Dandruff Shampoo That Makes Your Hair Pretty

kerastase specifique bain gommageIt's sort of a hair care holy grail -- a dandruff shampoo that makes your hair pretty instead of trashing it, and actually controls your dandruff symptoms. We had given up hope that such an elixir even existed, then we tried Kérastase Specifique, and our hope was reborn.

Old Loves and New Infatuations: Sebastian Potion 9

Filed under: Hair Care, Product Reviews

We're pretty sure some of you are sister-fans of Sebastian Potion 9 (which we still refer to as Potion #9, but corrected in this post so we don't look dumb.)

Remember the sticky, gluey consistency, that was so hard to get off your hands? The orange color? The way you could use in on wet or dry hair, and how it was the one product you could count on to give your Rachel-do the perfect mixture of smoothness with body?

Oh, those were some good times. But inexplicably, we were lured away from our reliable Potion 9 by the novel temptations of Pureology and Bumble and bumble.

We'd forgotten just how good Potion 9 was, until a box of review samples for the New Sebastian Professional line arrived.

Frederic Fekkai Salon Glaze Clear Shine Rinse: yay or nay?

Filed under: Hair Care, Product Reviews

I'm not the biggest beauty junkie, but I do like trying out products when all the magazines are touting them as the next miracle creation. Most of the time, I'm less than impressed, but when I do find a new addition to my makeup bag or medicine cabinet, it's so worth it. (I will never regret the $17 I spent on my Shu Uemura eyelash curler.)

So I decided to give Frederic Fekkai's Salon Glaze Clear Shine Rinse ($28) a whirl after reading about it seemingly everywhere this month. The silicone-based treatment promises it "binds shine, recharges color, and adds silkiness to the hair." Kind of like a DIY glossing treatment--which was just what my blonde highlights needed after a long summer.

Man face: Rejuvenate it with Gessato

Filed under: Accessories, Men, Skin Care, Product Reviews

Do you have a man face? Most men do. It's a fact.

Gessato Face Treatment's cell regeneration complex is a lightweight serum to help keep that man face as boyish as possible. It provides protection for the neck and face, which is nice, but it is also an agent for active rejuvenation. It's kind of like the fountain of youth in a small pump.

There are a bunch of vitamins in the formula, as well as ingredients we have trouble spelling. Together they help rebuild the skin's complex defense system and smooth out wrinkles by naturally hydrating the face and neutralizing the actions of free radicals. Do we sound smart when we say stuff like that?

Gessato Face Treatment "improves skin tone and hones the neckline, reducing the unsightly effects of double chin." That alone is worth the purchase.

We've been using the serum for a few weeks now (as well the shaving treatment), and we've got to admit- it's good. Yes, we still act like we're James Bond when we call it 'serum' and sometimes we pretend it will self-destruct if we don't apply it in a downwards motion, but that's okay if we act a bit boyish, or face will back us up.

Relief for chicken skin arms

Do you have red bumps on your arms that you just can't seem to get rid of? If so, you're in good company. In fact, 50% of all adults have "chicken skin" arms, officially known as Keratosis Pilaris.

KP is completely harmless, but for those of us with the rough skin it can be a downer, especially during hot, summer weather. You want to wear sleeveless styles, but it's just one more thing to be self-conscious about.

There's no cure for KP, but there are treatments. Mainly it's a combination of exfoliating and moisturizing, with lotions that can do both being the obvious one-step solution. It's important to find one that you like, because you have to keep up the treatments. Like dandruff, it's a skin condition you can manage but not eradicate.

Pharrell tires of tats, grows new skin to cover them

Filed under: Skin Care, Celebrities with Style

Now that he's getting older, Pharrell Williams no longer thinks his tattoos look good on him, and so he will be undergoing a revolutionary process to cover them up ... with his own skin. It's basically like a skin graft, the 35-year-old singer told Vogue, only "you're not taking skin from your ass or your legs. These guys actually grow the skin for you."

Gessato: Italian for your face

Filed under: Accessories, Men, Skin Care

To refer to Gessato's shaving treatment as shaving cream would be like calling gelato an ice cream. It ain't right.

Sure, gelato and ice cream are both made with milk and sugar, but... oh, sorry.

Gessato, as a company, is "Italian artisanship with modern formulations." This means that they make and market their products "in the United States with an Italian sensibility for time-hewn craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail."

Anti-cellulite products: do they work?

Let's get one thing straight. No product is going to make cellulite disappear. If you find one that promises to do so, wake up and smell the snake oil, baby, because the only thing that makes cellulite really disappear (and even this is debatable) is exercise, and lots of it.

But for those of us who either have the orange-peel flab or live in fear of getting it, there is a cellulite treatment that I have found to be effective. Unfortunately, it's on the fast track to that graveyard known as discontinued beauty products. Healing Garden's Anti-Cellulite Mousse is quite possibly the weirdest product I have ever used. To be honest, I have no idea how the crackling mousse found its way onto the shelves to begin with, but it did. It smells bad; it's hard to get out of the can; it feels like you are putting liquid nitrogen on your skin. But all of the unpleasantness seems worth it because the product is actually quite effective.

You can still buy a bottle on Ebay or at your local Big Lots. You better believe I'm buying up a lifetime supply because I am hooked!

Givenchy black for white mask

I see a red face and I want to paint it black. Givenchy has rolled out a cool new black mask to freshen the complexion. The Black for Light Mask is a light black foam that has a concentrated formula with molecules that capture and reflect the light as well as a vitamin cocktail of vitamins A, B and C and a black sureau extract that detoxifies and revitalizes the complexion. What is black sureau? It's basically the French term for black elderberry but black sureau sounds much more exotic. The fancy terminology along with the nine single serving tubs and the little paintbrush applicator combine for a luxe cosmetic experience. The mask sells for $49.50.
