There really is such thing as a denim distressing factory

Now, we're not saying that this is likely, or even possible, but let's just consider for one moment that the earth spins off of its axis and somehow distressed jeans go completely out of fashion. Would you ever have thought that an entire whole group of skilled artisans would suddenly be out of work? That's right, there's actually a factory in Kentucky full of specially-trained jean rippers that are responsible for carefully destroying high-end denim for brands like Rock and Republic. It's an art, or at least a craft.

We've always felt slightly weird about paying more for jeans that have been professionally "distressed," not on principle mind you, but just because we feel self-conscious that our designer rips and holes look like we're trying too hard. Now that we know serious craftsmen are on the job, we kinda feel guilty about not liking the pre-worn look. If you've never seen a jean distressing factory, you should definitely check out this photo essay.

If you're one of those who disagrees with paying for designer distressing, you can always go DIY.

Olympic obsession Shawn Johnson talks fashion

Shawn Johnson has won a gold medal. She has sponsorship deals with huge companies like McDonald's, coca Cola, Adidas and more. But, we suspect that someday we'll be seeing her with her own fashion line since this girl is an athlete with a big thing for fashion!

Ridiculously costly designer baby gifts

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Kids and Babies

What recession? You'd never know the country is in belt tightening mode by looking at the children's departments of upscale stores like Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus. With designer names and totally impractical materials -- silk? cashmere? for a baby? -- the racks are full of high fashion and high prices.

We suspect that Suri Cruise is somehow to blame. Talk about the child most likely to become Claire, Molly Ringwald's character in The Breakfast Club, who got detention for skipping school to go shopping. Perfectly coiffed and dressed, she has a wardrobe full of Cavalli, Dior and Burberry. And she's just turned two. We can only imagine what she'll be wearing at 16.

Some fancy baby duds for folks with more money than sense, in the gallery.

Men rock the floral pattern

We've always been a fan of the floral pattern for men's shirts, sort of. We'll qualify that by saying that we totally denounce most Hawaiian patterns and all patterns that include pink roses that look like they've been lifted off an ugly 80's couch. That narrows it down, right?

Men's floral patterns are coming back, but it's mostly limited to the tight, monochromatic vintage styles. You know, the ones that you could kinda convince yourself that they're not actually flowers, but maybe just flower-like plants -- because they're so small. They're a great way to bring some color and rhythm into your wardrobe without having to go plaid -- not that there's anything wrong with plaid.

Lost style: One Hit Wonder

Ah, the complicated attire of an ex-rock star -- it's a delicate balance of Hot Topic and Urban Outfitters. Your line is mostly t-shirts, jeans, nail polish, and emo bracelets. It sounds simple, but it's trickier than you might think. Each outfit holds subtle clues about the inner demons that might be lingering around from your days on tour.

First, you've got to have a black hoodie for those cold rainy days when you don't have any smack and your withdrawal symptoms are really flaring up. Plus, black hoodies make you look edgier. If you're a has-been from a hard rock band named Drive Shaft, it would just be bad form to look like a normal well-adjusted human being. Most days, a tight fitting graphic tee will do, but other days it's a v-neck, or maybe sleeveless. These are the subtle ways of master t-shirt connoisseur.

Many people on the island have worn holes in their jeans. Charlie, on the other hand, was hurled from the plane with a whole collection of those pre-worn, boot-cut jeans -- kind of an unfortunate choice, because they tear up pretty quick in a survival situation.
