Dress of the Day: Michael Kors Cashmere Tunic

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

michael kors cashmere tunic I am torn about the Runway Cashmere Tunic Dress by Michael Kors. The cable-knit sweater dress looks absolutely wonderfully warm and cozy, and yet because it's such a thick knit cashmere with a heavy, loose turtleneck, I am afraid that I won't get much wear out of it before I start buying up Spring clothes and (as usual) trying to wear them too early.

The dress is super versatile, though, because it can be worn belted or loose (the belt is sold separately), and as a dress, or as a tunic over leggings.

Available from eLuxury for $897 on sale from $1.995.

Dress of the Day: Joie She's in Love Cashmere Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

joie shes in love cashmere tunic dressThe name of the dress is "She's in Love," and that might be because I'm head over heels for Joie's sweater dress, or it might just be because I'm in love!

Eh. It's the dress.

Joie's She's in Love dress is perfectly warm for mid-January because it's made of an ivory-colored cashmere and wool blend. The deep V-neck is cut off with a slight gather just before it gets too risque to wear the dress to Sunday night dinner with the famil. The long sleeves let out to bells, which matches the slight fare in the skirt.

The dress is on sale at Amazon for $129.99, which is quite a deal given that the dress can do double duty as a tunic top over leggings.

Dress of the Day: Joie Casual Affair Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

joie casual affair tunic dressEven if all we're doing on a Sunday afternoon is doing "necessary" things around the house like paying bills and doing laundry, we still want to look cute in front of the boy who's watching a couple of football games in the living room. It's a casual affair, which means Joie's Casual Affair Tunic Dress is perfect. The dress is made of a soft stretchy blend of tencel and supima cotton and comes in a bright orange-pink called saffron. The dress has long sleeves so it's not too inappropriate for mid-January, and yet the fabric is not too heavy for inside.

The Casual Affair Tunic dress is on sale from Amazon for $54.99.

Dress of the Day: Rory Beca Lupe Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

rory beca tunic dressWe're barely through Fall and we're already tired of cashmere sweater dresses.

Okay, that's not true, but there are only so many sweater dresses a girl could have before she feels a little stuffy.

Rory Beca's Lupe Tunic Dress is just the break we need (for now). The very short minidress (that can be worn for what it is -- a tunic -- over jeans or leggings) is 100% silk that's sheer on the three-quarter length sleeves. The dress shown is fuschia on gray, but also comes in a black/gray print, as well as a gorgeous orange on navy.

Available from Revolve Clothing for $297.

Dress of the Day: Twinkle Ruffle Sleeve Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

twinkle black and cream ruffle sleeve tunic dressTwinkle, Twinkle, you're a star, dress of the day, today you are.

I love this Ruffle Sleeve Tunic Dress from Twinkle by Wenlan for the subtle paradox it is. With short little ruffle sleeves, modest to-the-knee length, and slightly assymetrical hemline, the dress is sweet. However, if you look closely at the black-on-cream-print, you'll see that the nature scene is pixelated into a digital ladnscape -- futuristic! I'm thinking shoes that are just as paradoxical would work best here. A sweet round toe, with a fierce stiletto heel.

Twinkle by Wenlan's Ruffle Sleeve Tunic Dress is available on sale at Azalea for $100.

Five butterfly fashion finds for spring

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Swimwear and Lingerie, Dresses

My butterfly fever started when Marsha over at Luxist posted the most adorable butterly flats from Alexander McQueen. The simple little ballet flats adorned with fluttery beauties sent me on the quest for other butterfly-themed fashions for spring.

1) My favorite butterfly creation is this dress by Mary L. Couture, a graceful, empire-waisted halter dress emboldened by large, dramatic butterflies.
2) Nannette Lepore uses butterflies as one of her signature themes and they are also on her airy spring tunic.
3) Walk on butterflies with Juicy Couture's pink thong sandals decorated with scattered clusters of bright butterflies.
4) Another plus for butterflies, they make great figure camouflage as in this halter bathing suit from Be Creative.
5) Fashion on the cheap, a cute black and white striped tank from Target gets an added kick from the addition of butterflies.

Dress of the Day: B with G Sam Squared Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

b with g sam squared tunic dressAs much as I bemoned the "tunic" last season, it seems I have done a complete 180. Well, not really, because last year, it was the tunic-with-leggings look that I didn't like. This Spring, however, I am head over heels in love with tunic dresses, like B with G's Sam Squared Mini Dress. The dress comes in army green and features a squared off neckline with a drawstring, a loose body, puffed short-sleeves, and a double-banded hemline. The material is a very comfortable Modal/Lycra. What a perfect dress to go either completely casual with a pair of flat sandals or out to lunch in wedge-heeled espadrilles!

Available at Saks Fifith Avenue for $167.

Dress of the Day: Sara Berman Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

sara berman knit tunicI caved, y'all. I did. I bashed leggings to high heaven all of last fall and yesterday, you could call me a hypocrite. I wore leggings.

However, I will have you know that I wore the leggings as a double for very thick, warm tights under a tunic that I could have worn as a dress, but wore as a top over the leggings and knee high boots because it was a chilly 70 degrees in Santa Monica. As soon as it warms up to 75 degrees though, I will ditch the leggings and slip into a tunic as a dress like Sara Berman's Knit Tunic Dress that comes in either black or gray rayon/cotton and features three thin stripes. The dress is sleeveless, but has wide straps that tie at the shoulders. And hey, if we get an unseasonable cold snap, I can slip it over another pair of black leggings, though I don't think it will look quite right. Better to go with tights and pair of rock solid heels.

Dress of the Day: Belted Tunic Dress

t luxury belted tunic dressIt's casual, but luxurious, because that's what you're all about on a Sunday morning, right?

The Belted Tunic Dress by T Luxury is made of 95% viscose and 5% Lycra, making it a comfortable piece to wear. The deep scoop neckline lets you breathe, as does the drop-waist that's embellished with a drawstring. The sleeves are a little longer than ¾-length, but still shorter than a long sleeve (does this count as "bracelet sleeve?"), and the skirt falls short to mid-thigh, screaming for a pair of leggings. The color is "Flint," much brighter than the usual charcoal heather you always wear, right?

The dress is available from PInk Mascara for $119.

Dress of the Day: Velvet Jersey Tunic

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

velvet jersey tunicIt's the final moment before the big day, and hopefully, all of your shopping is done. Even if it's not, you still have tomorrow, so kick back, girl, and relax tonight. Call over a few friends, because it's your last chance to see them before you head over to your parents' house to play dutiful daughter.

The Velvet Jersey Tunic is perfect for keeping it mellow. It's comfortable in 100% cotton jersey, and since it's sleeveless and short, it'll work with those other trends like leggings underneath and layering a sweater or cardigan over top. The best part about this olive and black striped little dress, of course, is that it has pockets.

Available at Neiman Marcus for $89.

Dress of the Day: Mossimo Tunic Shirtdress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

mossimo tunic shirtdressIt's back to work, Boss Lady.

Of course, we're also counting down to the Holidays, which means work and life are hectic and you certainly have the freedom to be a little more comfortably casual in the office (at least, that's what I'm doing until I get an email from HR).

The Tunic Shirtdress by Mossimo from Target is probably a little bit too short at mid-thigh to wear by itself, but over a pair of thick leggings, it's perfect. If your office is casual enough, you could even do it over a nice pair of "work jeans." The dress is made of 100% cotton poplin, has a loose fit, and and the 3/4-length sleeves are perfect to give you the agility at your laptop. (I hate sleeves that get in my way when I'm working.)

The dress is only $15.99 at Target and also comes in Caffe Latte, Blue, and Black.

Dress of the Day: Foley+Corinna Sweater Tunic Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

foley+corinna sweater tunicThis dress is only for the lioness-hearted because it screams "Look at me!" Did I say "screams?" I meant "shrieks."

Foley+Corinna's Lurex Sweater Tunic is short. It's shiny. And um, it's short. The tunic features a cowl neck, sparkle detail throughout, three-quarter length dolman sleeves. The dress comes in solid gold and solid blue, but if you're going to go out, you may as well go all out, and get the dress in big, broad, blue and gold stripes. Feign modesty with a pair of sheer, sparkling tights, but don't you dare cover up those legs in a pair of knee high boots. Just some sky-high stilettos and you are all set.

Of course, if you're not a brave, you can really wear the Lurex Sweater tunic as a tunic over jeans.

Foley+Corinna's Lurex Sweater Tunic is available from ShopBop for $238. The blue and gold stripe is exclusively sold there.

The sweetly feminine smock dress

Texas is known for many things, none of which include cutting-edge fashion. Yes, we who hail from the Lone Star state have to work a little harder than some to find out what is really trendy at the moment.

Being obsessed as I am with all things British, I am loving the smock-style tunic that has been shown at many of London's style shows this season. The neatly pleated, feminine smock can be worn as a dress or over jeans or leggings, and is nearly universally figure flattering if worn correctly. An article in the Telegraph gives a great list of Do's and Don'ts for tunic-wearing style.

Some of the tips include advice to wear chunky heels or knee-high boots when pairing smocks or tunics with jeans, and (my personal favorite) an admonishment against shunning the tunic in fear of looking pregnant - instead, hope that someone gives up their seat on the train for you!

Nautical-inspired tunic top

Filed under: Style in the News

Has this season's nautical trend left you shipwrecked on white-sailor-pants-island?

Well, if it has, you are not alone. I am right there with you. I'll admit it. I lack complete originality and always gravitate towards the traditional (and safe) nautical pieces. And as a result, I have way too many sailor pants and way too many peacoats. The worst part is that my mundane style has left me looking more like a washed-out sailor than a sultry vixen.

Well, this season I decided to abandon ship, broaden my horizons, and purchase something different. That noble quest led me straight to bebe.com where I fell in love with this tunic top. The gray and white stripes make it subtly nautical, while the draped neck and side ruching makes it conspicuously sexy.

Price: $54.
