A traditional Scottish turban?

Filed under: Style in the News, Vintage and Retro

Even if you don't know what a tartan is, you've seen one before. Tartans are those traditional plaid looking Scottish weaves that signify what clan you belong to -- kinda like a red bandanna signifies your belonging to the Bloodz -- except in kilt form. Anyway, the traditional garb is taking all sorts of new forms as the UK's immigrant population continues to explode.

Now immigrants are finding a way to show their Scottish pride in a way that still represents their foreign roots. Tartan turbans, skull caps, are apparently cropping up alongside kilts and scarfs in stores. Not only that, but among the 2,000+ registered tartans, a growing number of them signify the different ethnic groups. Scotch Chinese, Poles, and Sikhs each have their own register tartan, and Scotland's Jewish community is in the process of creating one.

Rate My Turban

Just yesterday some friends and I were lamenting the loss of sites like Hot or Not -- where random people uploaded their snapshots to a website and thousands of strangers rated their appearance on a scale of 1 to 10. Totally superficial, totally narcissistic, and totally awesome.

Now those with an eye for Sikh fashion have their own version -- Rate My Turban. From the site's creator: I noticed most Sikhs living outside India have a pretty boring turban life (they wear 1-2 colours and usually tie the same style turban as their fathers).Furthermore, today's Sikhs are commonly confused for Muslims and I wanted to think of a creative way to showcase Sikhs and their royal turbans in a positive way to the general public, and also show Sikh youths that wearing a turban is cool and fashionable.

Not only does Rate My Turban have a decidedly worthier cause than the self-indulgent, people-rating sites of yore, it features some amazing looks. Check out the Hall of Fame if you don't believe me. Those turbans are amazing.

Fall trends: Turbans

Filed under: Runway Trends, Stores We Love, Clothing

Both a symbol of religious devotion and a way of keeping one's dome warm, turbans are traditional headwear utitlized by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

But turbans aren't just for sheiks and characters played by Joan Collins and/or Rudolph Valentino ... at least not anymore. This fall, Biba, Louis Vuitton and Chloe all have turban hats in their collections.

While turbans are not exactly something on my "must-have for fall" list, I'd imagine that they are on the Xmas list of one Alexis Morrell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan.
