Tangled Up in Blue

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

Yellow was supposed to be the big color this year. But bright blue -- and its first cousins teal and turquoise -- showed up on several guests at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala Monday night, making it look a little bit like a 1985 bridesmaids' gathering. Albeit with a bunch of really lovely bridesmaids.

While these shades of blue can make for stunning dresses, they can still be hard to pull off. Teal, when it veers toward green, can make white skin look pale, and not it a good way. And any shade of blue can be a nightmare to accessorize. Add black shoes and you are headed for the disco. Go light or colored, and, well, you're back in the bridal party.

Happily, these women made blue look beautiful, and certainly appropriate for a cool and rainy spring day.

Brooke Shields adopted spring's one-shoulder look in deep blue, worn with a pair of Wonder Woman-worthy cuffs. Like many other guests, she wore her hair in soft, loose waves.

Cindy Crawford and Donatella Versace both wore shades of blue Versace. Crawford chose matching blue shoes and a blue clutch.

Never one to be left out of a trend, Madonna showed up in a teal headdress.

Katy Perry wore blue as if she meant business.

Spring Makeup Alert: Turquoise Eyeshadow

Tribal Trends - Tip of the Day!

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Tribal trends have been around for awhile. But the exact "tribe" seems to constantly be in flux. Last week it was Aztec and this week, it's Navajo. And we like the Navajo because it is rooted right here in the good old U.S. of A. The inspired look calls to mind the Southwest and peaceful, free spirits -- Navajo is fast becoming our favorite print for the summer.

Rosario Dawson in Bottega Veneta - I Want That!

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

Rosario DawsonAlas! A star in Bottega Veneta! We have always adored Bottega Veneta's romantic silhouettes but seeing the label on the red carpet is rare. We don't know why more stars don't wear BV because, to be totally honest, Rosario Dawson is looking hot! Will Smith's real life wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, was unable to attend the Seven Pounds premiere with her man, so star and starlet walked the carpet together. And man did Rosario give Jada a run for her money!

The Ray-Ban wayfarer gets remixed for summer, we're still indifferent

As we mentioned earlier, we're not totally committed to wearing Ray-Ban wayfarers on our face this summer.

To sum up our sentiments about the phenomenon known as the wayfarer in a short and succinct matter, we would like to borrow a sentence from writer Hadley Freeman, whom recently wrote about the coveted frames:

"Many a poem, many a song, many an ode has been written about the human face, but I have yet to read one that suggests it might be improved by the addition of a pair of wonkily shaped plastic glasses in some kind of neon colour."

Ooh, Hadley. It's like you were reading our minds.

Why aren't you wearing this? Amazonite and Turquoise Necklace

Our perfectly sunkissed bronze skin (which totally came out of a bottle --shh! Don't tell anyone!) is so easy to accessorize. Whereas during the winter we have to be more careful about color so we don't look washed out, during the summer we are invincible. Bright, simple white makes us look like we're glowing. Corals just accentuate our golden goddess status. And blue and greens? They help our eyes to pop, plus they remind us of the ocean and beach, which is where we were (in our minds) when we developed our fabulous tan.

Why aren't you wearing this? Turquoise sandals with beads

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

What's not to love about a bright pair of funky, beaded sandals? They can liven up a boring jeans and tee outfit, they'd be great with a sweet little sundress, and they're a fabulous choice to wear to the beach or pool!

We're kind of partial to these Amrita Singh Turquoise Sandals with Beads, $66 at Chickdowntown. Turquoise is a gorgeous color for summer, but we really like the colored beads -- they add a lot of interest and will only bring more attention to the gorgeous pedicure we're sure to have!

Why aren't you wearing this? Vilma Turquoise necklace

Jewelry doesn't have to be big, bold, or full of bling in order to make an impact. A delicate but unique design can be just as effective, and might look more proportional with certain outfits. A small pop of color paired with an unusual shape might be all you need.

wardrobe_remix Top Pic(k)s: Ready for Spring

Yes Becky on wardrobe_remix @ Flickrwardrobe_remix is a Flickr community dedicated to exploring all the amazing everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. Real people, just like you and me. Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

I love this look by Yes Becky. Taken against the scenic backdrop of London's rainy Hyde Park, she looks so well put together and ready for spring. I love the combination of the yellow and turquoise with the black. She's matched everything just so perfectly...if you look closely, even her manicure matches the outfit! All of the individual pieces of this outfit look great as well, and almost everything is from class British labels such as Topshop, Primark, and Miss Selfridge.

See my other top pic(k)s from this week's wardrobe_remixers below.
