Women of the Railroad Protest See Through Uniforms

Filed under: Style in the News, Flatter Your Figure

sexy stewardess costumeSee-through uniforms might be a huge hit when it comes to boosting ridership in the States (maybe we'll send that suggestion to Amtrak). But in the UK -- where the train culture never really died -- women at National Express are complaining that the new almost sheer uniforms are simply demoralizing. To show their disgust, tons of female workers are sending the new uniforms back to HQ because they apparently "left little to the imagination." What's the deal? Is National Express trying to become the Hooters of the railway?

Gwen Stefani designing uniforms for W Hotel bar

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Uniforms can go one of two ways. A man (or woman) in the right uniform can be ridiculously sexy (Catholic school, Navy, baseball), but in the wrong one (bellhop, Reno 911) can have just the opposite effect. W Hotels is certainly aware of this fact, and so in what we think is a brilliant move, they've brought in Gwen Stefani to design dresses for the female bar staff at their hotels.

Gwen's L.A.M.B. line is wildly popular, and we've got to say that if we had to wear uniforms, we'd be thrilled to have Gwen design them (hint, hint, to the powers that be -- StyleList bloggers need designer uniforms!).

Service industry wants Heidi Klum to design their uniforms

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

If you've ever had to wear a uniform at your job -- and let's face it most of us have -- you probably took away the same life lesson that we did: uniforms suck. Most of them look tacky, but even the rare uniform that doesn't combine horrendous color combos with checkers and stripes is still somehow just a little humiliating. It's like you're supposed to not feel cool.

We've always thought that the uniform is a management tactic to keep employees in their place, but apparently lots people think that corporations just need a little help from fashion professionals like Heidi Klum. Then, going to work in a uniform wouldn't suck. After Heidi challenged designers to rethink the uniform for US postal workers on Project Runway, she says that flight attendants, baristas, and cashiers are constantly asking her to do something about their horrible attire.

Flight attendant fashion

I recently learned that an old friend from high school had become a flight attendant, and I instantly wanted to ask her all about it. Maybe it's my love of traveling, or the fact that I used to do long-haul overseas flights 3 or 4 times a year, but I've always been fascinated by the occupation.

That interest, however, didn't extend to flight attendant "fashion." Both the men's and women's uniforms are bland, straightforward, and certainly nothing to write home about.

But according to Catwalk Queen, that hasn't always been the case. She's put together a retrospective of airline uniforms from the late 60s and early 70s -- and they look awesome.

The photo above is the outfit worn by KLM Dutch Airlines from 1971. The hat, the neck wear, the cut of the dress -- all amazing! While I wouldn't recommend wearing them together, I bet you could pull off any of these pieces individually. I'd even leave the wings on the hat -- just as a nod to vintage chic. She's also included a United Airlines uniform from 1968 to 1970, and I bet even some adventurous guys could pull off the hat that comes with that outfit.

I wonder why the industry has been so boring since then?

British schoolboy uniforms especially weird

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

As we learned last week, if there's a place for oddball, quirky, and eccentric uniforms, it's Britain. One place that this unique affliction gift is especially apparent is in the uniforms worn by British schoolboys. Everyone has to wear a uniform at UK schools -- from the lowliest commoner right up to the prince -- and the origins of many of these garments date back hundreds of years.

Thus, they tend to look a little weird.

If you're at all interested in British schoolboy fashion (or are a history geek like me), here's a great site cataloging a number of uniforms worn over the years, along with a little background on how the outfit came to be.

My personal favorite is the Bluecoat -- not because I think it makes for a cool uniform, but because I have a feeling it'd look good on it's own, as a fashion statement. I'm not sure if they make these in adult sizes, but rest assured, come next winter I'll be on the hunt for one. The only potential problem is that I'm 6'4", and, after spending a few years in the UK, I'm well aware that very little -- if anything -- in that country is made for a man of my size.

But, even if I can't find a Bluecoat, I'm almost positive I can find one of these snazzy military hats -- which are almost as cool.
