Tip of the Day: Wear Jewelry Alchemy by Melissa McClure

Filed under: Accessories, Style Tip of the Day

The brains behind the organic line dubbed Jewelry Alchemy, Melissa McClure brings the infinite idea of "opposites attract" to life in her line.

Coming from a family lineage full of jewelers and goldsmiths, it was only natural that McClure start her own jewelry collection. Having much to do with her split childhood between energetic New York and laid back Texas, her collection is an excellent contrast of nature vs. urban.

Some of our favorites from her silver and gold collection are the static branch choker necklace, asymmetrical large twig clasp necklace, assorted button bangle bracelets, double helix bracelet, leather wrap honeycomb, and the long simple twig earrings.

All stores that carry the line are located in West Hollywood. However, if you aren't in Cali, all's not lost. You can shop the line at Cake Jewelry.

Lauren Wolf Jewelry

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

Jewelry designer Lauren Wolf has some distinctive influences in her jewelry: She studied in coastal Mexico and now works "out of her studio in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge." While these might seem like opposing forces, she finds amazing and creative ways to use these two influences in her jewelry.

Textures like sting ray skin and and snake skin are cast in gold and silver, giving an urban feel to an otherwise coastal motif. However, I'm partial to the work she does with floral designs -- simple, beautiful flowers are given an edgy twist, so instead of just looking pretty and girly, they look feminine and badass (and who doesn't love that?). Lauren has lots of celebrity fans, including Lindsay Lohan, Cameron Diaz, Michelle Williams, Penelope Cruz, and Brooke Shields.

This isn't your grandma's costume jewelry -- it's the real deal. If you're looking for an incredible signature piece that you can be sure folks will notice for years to come, you've got to check out Lauren Wolf.

BET's Rip the Runway

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

BET's third annual Rip the Runway premiered last Tuesday. And it was amazing.

Diddy opened the show by defining fashion, specifically black fashion, saying, "It's not just the clothes; it's the lifestyle; it's the swagger ... Urban fashion is at the forefront of style around the world." BET's tagline for Rip the Runway is "black fashion," but that's really just a label, like preppy or geek chic. The fashions were about attitude and confidence -- traits that aren't bound by skin color.

Collections by Missy Elliott, Zac Posen, Snoop Dogg (and Mrs. Dogg), Nelly, Diddy, and more were showcased by models who truly strutted their stuff down the runway, dancing to performances by artists like N.E.R.D., Flo Rida and T-Pain.

Be sure to check out the galleries from the show. I'm telling you, if I had my choice of runways to watch (or walk -- you hear that, Nelly?), this would be it. The music, the attitude, the passion evident in everyone from the designers to the models to the performers ... it was just fabulous. If you missed it, you can still watch the entire show on BET's website and go through the rest of Styledash's coverage of Rip the Runway.

Community gardens: The next big thing

Filed under: Haute Home, Fashionable Food

Two years ago, a few of my idle graduate student friends decided that they wanted to try their hand at homegrown. (Not that kind of homegrown -- I mean homegrown vegetables.) But living in a urban apartment, their lives weren't exactly set up for farming. What yard they had access to had already been hostilely claimed by the little dog owners as a make-shift puppy toilet.

Not to be discouraged, my friends looked into getting a plot in the city garden. For a modest fee, they were able to rent a 50 square foot garden plot staked off and surrounded by other green-thumbed community members.

As it turns out, community gardens are growing in popularity all over the world. In the United Kingdom, for instance, garden allotments have become so coveted that there is often a 10 year waiting list for a spot. Many explain the rising popularity of community gardens as a response to increased concern with food safety and the uncertainty about the dangers of genetically modified foods.
