Tom Brokaw Talks Style and Character with StyleList

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Books

tom brokawThe Character Project is an exploration of America, sponsored by USA Networks as part of their ongoing celebration of "characters." The project includes a traveling photo exhibition, with work from 11 photographers who traveled across the country, capturing the spirit – and character – of our country.

There is also a gorgeous book, published by Chronicle Books, with almost 200 pages of the color and black and white photos, and a foreword by seasoned character-observer, Tom Brokaw. Mr. Brokaw was gracious enough to take the time to chat with us about the Character Project and share his thoughts on how style relates to character. He even admitted to some style experiments of his own, back in the 70s!

Exclusive! Behind the scenes with the costume designer of "The Starter Wife"

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Last season saw the return of funny lady Debra Messing to the small screen in USA's mini-series, The Starter Wife. It was such a hit that USA is bringing it back as a full series, with the two hour premiere on Monday, October 10th.

The mini-series, based on Gigi Levangie Grazer's New York Times bestselling novel, focused on Molly, Debra Messing's character, dealing with the shock of a surprise divorce. The series will follow her as she recovers and starts to build her life. As the tagline says, "Wife Goes On"!

Today we have a special exclusive: a behind the scenes visit with Agata Maaszkiewicz, the costume designer for The Starter Wife. She talks about working with Debra Messing and the style they created her for character Molly. Watch and enjoy!

And the debate winner is...the genius who made "That One" t-shirts

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Style for a Cause

Many people watching the debate last night were surprised to see John McCain jerk at thumb at Obama and refer to his democratic rival as "That One". Post-debate the analysts are still trying to figure out if McCain meant it as a pejorative, if he forgot Obama's name and awkwardly tried to cover a senior moment, or if it was simply another of the (many) wince-worthy jokes that McCain scattered through his performance.

Filed under: Holiday Style, Style in the News, Clothing, Men

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Today is the 4th of July. Chances are that if you were in the market for a t-shirt commemorating the holiday you already have it on. However, if that isn't the case, or if you are entertaining thoughts of getting a jump on 2009, then check out these patriotic tees from T-Shirts.com "one of the largest online retailers of t-shirts!"

Are the Beckhams blowing this hotdog stand?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

They came, they saw, they got homesick -- but are they about to bail out on the American dream? Rumor has it that the hard knock life here in the States is wearing thin on the high profile couple and they might decide to move back across the pond sooner than anticipated. Clearly, the Beckhams' plans for US domination haven't panned out the way they expected.

For starters -- even though she promises that her men's jeans won't show off guys' junk -- Posh's clothing line dVb
isn't doing so hot. After being expected to bring in about $50M in sales at this point, the line has done a disappointing $15M. That's 70% lower than expected -- ouch! Maybe she should try some crotchless men's jeans, she couldn't do much worse. Reportedly, her tour with the Spice Girls only stirred up more discontent with her yankee lifestyle.

Beck's American experience has also been a bit of downer, since injuries have kept him off the field for all but 5 games last season. I guess it gave him plenty of time to think about why the hell he's playing for the LA Galaxy. Oh yeah, it must the $250M contract. According to PopCrunch, both Posh and Beck are disillusioned and "would much rather be living in the UK."

Ben Sherman.com Sale

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Steals and Deals

If you like bargain hunting -- and I know I do -- then you definitely want to check this deal out. Right now, Ben Sherman USA's online store it knocking an extra 25% off of their sale prices on men's and women's clothing, footwear, and accessories.

The Ben Sherman line is pretty classic, with lots of styles that keep it simple and tasteful. The Sherman brand is a heavy hitter in the UK, but here in the States it can usually only be found in upscale department stores and Urban Outfitters type places.

This Manor Mod Fit pearl snap that was originally $79.00, is now a much more reasonable $44.99 -- and unlike most pearl-snaps, the pattern's not obnoxious.

Patriotic heels for the 4th of July

This is the one day of the year when -- if you're American -- you're practically required to wear red, white and blue. But for those of you heading out to the fireworks tonight, who really want to get blinged-out, USA-style, check out these heels from Stuart Weitzman, adorned with the American flag.

OK, I'll admit, they're incredibly tacky -- downright ugly, in fact. But you'll be able to wear them every 4th of July for the rest of your life, and no one will make fun of you. Plus, they're sparkly!

Even if you don't buy the shoes, you should totally check out the user-submitted "reviews" on the Stuart Weitzman site. This is my favorite:

Amazing! I wore these shoes through the mud and rubble of a bombed out home in Iraq just to show these folks what freedom really means! Then, believe it or not, I ran into a woman, the owner of the rubble, and she had on a pair just like them except they had an Iraqi flag on them. I told her they must be knock offs, I mean, would Stuart Weitzman make a pair of shoes with anything but an American flag? Anyway, we're still good friends and we still marvel and laugh over that coincidence. Great shoes!
I have a sneaking suspicion that the review is sarcastic, but I'm really, really hoping it's not.

Happy 4th!
