What to wear on Valentines: Keepin' it casual

Let's say you haven't been dating for very long, and you don't want to come off like a commitment-obsessed psycho by going all out on a super-formal Valentines Day date. So you're keeping it casual. Sounds easy, right?

Sort of. While, chances are, you dress down for most nights grabbing dinner, catching a movie, or just vegging out on the couch, this is still a special occasion -- even if you're both pretending it's not. Make sure your date knows you care by dressing it up a notch. Don't go nuts -- showing up in black tie attire (or a formal gown, or whatever) is likely to make your relatively unfamiliar partner feel really uncomfortable.

Ladies:
  • A little extra attention on the accessories goes a long way. Try a nicer necklace, or even some glitzy earrings.
  • Remember, you're going for a look that's slightly spruced up compared to how you normally dress. So if your everyday style is a ratty t-shirt and sweatpants (God forbid), a pair of jeans and halfway decent top will do the trick.
Guys:
  • Unless you're particularly fashion-forward, look for little ways to show you thought about your appearance before the big (albeit casual) date. No hats, no holes, no beer logos.
  • Shoes are the key -- they can be the difference between slob and sloppy chic. Try a stylish slip-on -- it's inexpensive, effective, and laid back enough for jeans and an untucked shirt.
So give it a shot. With a small amount of forethought, you can help make sure this isn't the last Valentines Day the two of you spend together.

What to wear on Valentines: Formal dinner

If you're like most of us, chances are you don't spend a lot of time in fine dining establishments. They're expensive, they're stuffy, and the food has funny names. Nevertheless, you're being a good boyfriend this Valentines Day, and taking your special lady to the fanciest place in town.

Now what are you supposed to wear?

Before you choose an outfit, make sure you understand the dress code. If you're going someplace really nice, then it might be black-tie only (read: tuxedo). However, more than likely you've chosen someplace with a dress code that isn't quite so well defined. Here's how to approach this potentially thorny situation:
  • Call ahead. Hopefully you'll get a straight answer, like: "slacks and a shirt, no tie or jacket required."
  • If you get a coded answer, like: "casual elegance," "proper attire," or "dressy casual," resist the temptation to ask "what the hell does that mean?" All of these cryptic responses translate into: no shorts, no t-shirts or tank tops, and no open-toed shoes. Everything else is fair game.
  • If you're still worried, don't hesitate to swing by the restaurant beforehand. Wait around outside for 10 minutes, and you'll get an idea of what other guests are wearing.
  • When in doubt, overdress. A tie and jacket is perfectly acceptable at any place that considers itself fine dining. And in fact, if you live on the East Coast, this might be expected. (In most other parts of the country it's rare that these will be required.)
Now that you know what to wear, check out the gallery so you know you'll look good wearing it.

Agent Provocateur Ecards for Valentines Day

So let's pretend you're too lazy to go out to dinner, and you can't be bothered to schlep down to the drugstore to get a real card. You're a) the worst Valentines Day date ever, and b) you're probably looking for the just the right electronic sentiment to send your loved one.

Check this out. These racy Ecards from lingerie making Agent Provocateur are sure to make your special someone's heart skip a beat. Who wouldn't want a Valentines Day card adorned with a steaming hot underwear model and something sexy scribed in French?

That said, I'm not sure I know many ladies who would appreciate receiving a V-day card with some other (very gorgeous) woman on it, and I doubt many girlfriends want their man lusting after another woman before the big date. But if you girlfriend loves looking at lingerie (or you have one those "open relationships") this might be for you.

Dress of the Day: Diane von Furstenberg Volante

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

diane von furstenberg volante dress
You can bet that you won't be the only lady in red on Valentine's Day, but in Diane von Furstenberg's Volante Dress, you'll definitely stand out.

The dress is classic DvF as a wrap, but romantic ruffles add a twist. There are ruffles at the buttoned cuffs, and at the neckline, which is only for the woman who has the guts (and chest) to wear one so deep and revealing. For a sexy Valentine's Day look, I'd go with a pair of strappy sandals.

Available from Pink Mascara on sale for $297.

Stylishly swank in cyberspace - The Bar

the bar.comIt's Valentine's Eve, dolls. What are you up to? Prepping those final ingredients for a fabulously romantic dinner that you're cooking? Wrapping a tiny sparkling gift in pink and red paper? Doing your nails?

None of the above! Because what you should be doing is relaxing during this Happy Hour with a Valentine's Day-inspired cocktail. TheBar.com is a new interactive site that introduces you to "Jack," the bartender who actually speaks to you from behind a swanky bar. His accent is a little weird, but it's fun to ask him to make you a drink. The site is built on the largest drinks database, so there probably isn't something that this Jack could mix up for you for Valentine's Day!

Shoes, not candy for Valentine's Day

Every year I stress like crazy on Valentine's Day. I'm a pretty decent gift-giver, so I'm always trying to think of a way to top last year's present -- should I be funny, or lovey-dovey, or both?

Especially for those of you, like me, that are in relationships with "non-traditional" sorts who eschew candy and flowers, here's something you might have luck with: Sweetshoes. The box is decorated as if it was full of candy, but -- surprise! -- inside you'll find totally cute and delightfully trendy sneakers instead.

My favorite thing is that in the lower right-hand corner, small, official-looking text reads "Net Wt. 1 Pair." Hysterical.

Plus, chances are, the shoes will be a hit amongst even the most discerning connoisseurs.

Buy yourself a Valentine's Day gift at Bella Bella

Filed under: Stores We Love, Swimwear and Lingerie

bella bella lingerie loungeYeah yeah yeah. So your husband or boyfriend might give you a gift of lingerie this coming Valentine's Day. That's sweet and sexy right?

No. He didn't buy that gift for you. He bought it for him (not that he's going to wear it, but you know what I mean). Instead of letting him get away with those kind of antics that leave you without a real gift of love (like jewelry!), tell him what you really want, and then head over to Bella Bella Boutique and buy yourself some luxury lingerie. Yes, sexy lingerie for you, from you, that you wear for yourself when you want to feel sexy and pretty in pink.

Some of the pieces are a little -- ahem -- racy for my taste, but Bella Bella's Valentine's Day 2007 Collection is absolutely adorable in all its pink and red glory. I would love to stomp around my kitchen in the Leg Avenue Cameo Lace Chemise (pictured).

Prices range from $28 to $70 for sets.
