Vera Wang Makes Hall of Fame ... in Figure Skating

Filed under: Style in the News

Vera WangWe all know Vera Wang as a top designer, but not everyone is aware that she was once a top figure skater. In fact, in 1968, she was named one of Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd -- that same year she competed in the U.S. Figure Skating Championship. She only became a designer because she didn't make the Olympic team -- thank goodness there were better skaters, right?

Vera Wang honored at FiFi Awards

The 36th Annual FiFi Awards were held this week, and Vera Wang was honored with a Hall of Fame award. Winning a FiFi is like winning an Oscar of fragrance. Vera was especially excited because she spent a lot of time in France as a young girl, with perfumes playing a big part in her life.

Simply Vera by Vera Wang: Spring 2008

Contrary to what the weather would lead us to believe, it's actually spring. And on that fine day, when the cold fronts that are brought on by these horrible thunderstorms finally cease, we'll be there -- to greet the warm sun in our favorite pair of over-priced sunglasses and possibly wearing a top or sun dress by Simply Vera.

First, things first: We were less than impressed with Vera Wang's diffusion line with Kohl's last season. The sizing was all out of whack and we didn't like the fact that the collection was geared towards our lovely but middle-aged mothers.

Dress of the Day: Vera Wang Red Jersey Gown

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing, Dresses

vera wang red jersey gownBecause the red carpet of the Academy Awards is still burning in my brain, all I can see is red and maternity, though last night they weren't together. However, if you happen to be pregnant at your next red carpet event (of which I know you have so many!), Vera Wang's Jersey Gown in scarlet puts both together. In a departure from the usual silk, satin and taffeta for evening wear, the dress is made of super soft, super comfortable stretch knit jersey, is ruched at the bust and at the empire waist, which makes the dress both perfectly comfortable if you don't want to "suck it in," or if you can't (because you've got a baby bump!)

The dress is on sale at Bluefly for $321.30.

Simply a great deal by Vera Wang

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Steals and Deals

This past week I have been temporarily transplanted from my life in LA to a life in the suburbs of Washington DC. It's just a temporary holiday transplant, but a transplant all the same. You would think since I am only out here for a week that I could keep myself from shopping. Well, obviously you don't know me that well because I can find shopping bliss in any location.

My latest bit of bliss was found in the most unexpected place, Kohls. I hit the suburban superstore with my Mother and got lucky with the Simply Vera by Vera Wang department. The pieces were fashionable, affordable, and well made. I tried on just about every piece in the collection and found that they fit true to size and in a few cases they fit a bit larger than usual.

I picked up a few tops, a sweater, and the greatest find was a pair of stacked heel leather boots. Head to your nearest Kohls to check out the line (which is currently on sale) or go to Kohls.com.

The year's worst fashion moments (according to the NY Times)

Like any year, 2007 was full of memorable, and oh-so-forgettable, fashion moments. The casual fashionista probably noticed H&M, Target, and other mainstream retailers stopped carrying the annoyingly bold, 80s-inspired fashions that'd been a staple for far too long, opting instead for a re-invention of the 90s -- grunge, grime, and even retro-gaming were big in the second half of the year.

But what were the foul-ups -- the big industry issues that, regardless of major trends, will live on in infamy? According to Eric Wilson at the NY Times, these were the worst of the worst:
Agreed -- all of that was awful.

What were your most-hated fashion happenings in 2007?

SimplyVera undies at Kohl's

Filed under: Style in the News, Swimwear and Lingerie

I know that not everyone here at Styledash approves of Kohl's, but I do. In fact, I've been looking forward to Kohl's new Vera Wang collection since it was announced last year.

And apparently I was not the only one who was looking forward to Wang's dip into democratic design. Some of the more popular separates are now selling on eBay for up to three times the retail price.

The good pieces incorporate Vera's signature style: luxe fabrics, rich colors, elegance. To me, the SimplyVera intimates come closest to the the look and feel of the high-end Vera Wang. A case in point is the Lace underwire bra and thong, which look like they could be sold in a regular Vera lingerie store. What I like most about these dainties is that they're sexy in a demure sort of way.

It's Simply Vera, indeed.

Vera Wang lingerie, more nice than naughty

Like her bridal wear and her perfumes, Vera Wang's lingerie is for the romantic who is not on a budget. Her designs are made of whispers of silk chiffon, tucked and pleated and embellished with beads. The silk gowns are done in classic goddess shapes and muted tones. Wang's designs are the very opposite of naughty so these aren't the go-to items when you are looking for drop-dead sexy. However, as a woman who has received some very risque outfits as presents (you want me to wear that?) I can say a gift of Vera Wang lingerie might get you wear you want to go a lot faster. Spend more than $250 and Saks throws in the silk and tulle camisole shown here.

Vera Wang's Truly Pink

There's no doubt what the main notes in Vera Wang's Truly Pink perfume are. Even if I hadn't seen the pink rose covered advertisement for the perfume, I would have known it was a rose and peony centered perfume. I took one sniff and was immediately taken back to when I used to work at a gardening magazine and the office would be filled with cut flowers after an editorial shoot. This scent captures the sweetness of roses along with just a hint of the slightly fussy and spicy scent of peonies. It has top notes of white freesia, cassis and lychee blossom and a drydown of creamy woods, iris and violet but really what you mainly get is the roses. In the past, I have been quite vocal about my dislike of the pink fragrances so I am surprised by how much I like this one. It's everything a pink scent should be, highly floral and feminine. Unique it's not, you could probably just spring for Bulgarian rose attar and get a similar experience but at least it doesn't have the hyper-fruity chemical tang that puts me off so many pink fragrances. The 3.4 ounce eau du parfum sells for $85.

How very Vera!

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Clothing, Shoes

According to a Women's Wear Daily report, Vera Wang will be creating a line of premium fashions and lifestyle goods for Kohl's department stores called "Very Vera." Following the design-for-the-rest-of-us vanguard, Target, Kohl's two-year courtship of Wang has finally paid off.

Best known for her elegant, expensive wedding dresses, Wang's new line will include women's apparel, intimates, leather goods, jewelry, linens and footwear. The Very Vera line will be available in all 900 Kohl's stores and online at kohls.com starting in the fall of 2007.
