Stacy London Uses Pantene and Her Hair Looks Great

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style, Hair Cut and Style

When it comes to hair products, our opinion is equally divided between "drugstore practical" and "pricey salon splurge". And given the state of the economy, we must admit that lately drugstore brands like Pantene have been showing up in our shower with increasing regularity.

Carmindy's Get Positively Beautiful Book

"Use dark eyeliner for a smoldering look he won't be able to resist. Apply blush to contour your face so your cheeks won't look fat. Use lip gloss for a sexy pout." Other beauty books are all about how to make yourself attractive for other people. What Not to Wear's Carmindy's Get Positively Beautiful book is not that kind of getting gorgeous guide.

Yes WSJ, Michelle Obama *is* our new fashion darling

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

The Wall Street Journal finally discovered our fashion crush on Michelle Obama. And clearly we have plenty of company. Following her appearance on The View (another secret love) women across the nation are flocking to White House/Black Market to buy the $148 dress Michelle wore on the show.

Like us, we're sure Michelle prefers to have her assets listed in this order: smart, funny and pretty. And that's how we'd describe her. She's wicked smart, and successful, and we can totally imagine being office buddies with her.

Kind folks sweeten bad reviews with a little good news, too

Two weekends ago we wore a new party dress. In the scramble out the door we forgot to do that last minute Any Mistakes? double-check.

We were excited to see event pictures until confronted by the one of ourselves wearing The Wrong Shoes and no earrings. Gack! We had to go find a good picture from another night just to feel calm again.

It got us to thinking, this must be what it's like for celebs, flipping through a magazine and seeing yourself at the back, in the What Not To Wear files. Do they keep a library of past appearances in best dressed spreads, just to stay sane?

We determined that it would be a kindness to combine the good news with the bad, so we were pleased to see that Stylelist is doing just that, in a feature that shows celebs getting it wrong, and then getting it right.

We think Hollywood will approve. Based on personal experience, a spoonful of sugar really does make the medicine go down easier.

Pocket squares aren't for squares

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Men

This one is for Clinton Kelly.

If Mr. Kelly, of TLC's What Not to Wear, has pushed one fashion accessory on the American public it is the pocket square. Unfortunately, very few of the very few men that appear on the show are open to said square. Why not? What's the big deal?

Do people think squares are for squares? Probably. Not us. We agree, Clinton, a bold silk handkerchief in a man's coat pocket can add just the right amount of pop to his ensemble.

The smoky eye lie

At the gym this week, as usual we were watching What Not Wear. It was standard fare until they got to Carmindy, the so lovely, sweet and dreamy make up guru.

The makeover-ee asked Carmindy to show her how to do a smoky eye. Carmindy arched a perfect eyebrow and responded, "Oh, that's what you want to learn?"

Tim Gunn beats Stacy London

Filed under: Style in the News

If your wardrobe is a reflection of your true self, it stands to reason that a messy, outdated closet equals inner turmoil.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who ever watched Tim Gunn's Guide to Style on Bravo, or TLC's What Not To Wear. The transformation on each episode is always accompanied by tears and high emotions.

Here's the question. Your life is being dissected in front of TV cameras, presumably for the viewing enjoyment of millions. Which "therapist" would you prefer to experience:

Dissecting the style of a Top Model: Jaslene Gonzalez

You would think that since America's Next Top Model is all about making it big in the fashion industry that Tyra Banks would try and teach these girls something about, well, fashion. Unfortunately, it looks like the Cycle 8 winner, Jaslene Gonzalez, never made it through a what not to wear class.

She always looks like she's trying too hard -- and she probably is. After all, a model from a reality show has a lot more to prove than anyone else in the fashion industry. She just needs to relax a little bit. She's an absolutely gorgeous girl and she doesn't need to try on every single trend at once in order to look stylish. In fact, I think overdoing it with trends has the opposite effect. I love Jaslene, and I'm impressed that she's been one of the most successful winners of ANTM. I just wish she would tone it down a little bit.

You just don't need to wear leggings, and moccasin boots and gold accessories and side swept bangs and fake tan all on the same day. Let Jaslene be a lesson to us all -- wear trends just one or two at a time. More than that is overkill. Browse through the gallery and see some more examples of what not to do. She's living proof that overdoing it can cheapen the look of even the most beautiful girl.
