The NFL Shop Targets the Female Consumer - Role Reversal

Filed under: Holiday Style, Gift Guides

A Cowboys hating Panthers fan wears a Jessica Simpson costume Nothing gets women excited like choking down a bunch of light beer and nachos while a fierce NFL match-up is blaring on the big screen. You know it. And the gear ... those loose-fitting mesh jerseys and awesome wool knit caps with gaudy team colors all over them... women just eat that stuff up. Don't they? Well, maybe that's not the case for all women, but regardless the NFL is marketing directly to women this year -- only it's not what you think.

Self-defense stilettos

When we heard about Self-Defense Stilettos, we have to admit that we got really excited. We pictured shoes with a James Bond-esque component, like a button to shoot pepper spray out of the heel or a hidden compartment in the platform for a stun gun or something.

Sterling silver heart bracelet from Pangea supports breast cancer awareness

Pangea Collection is a great place to find beautiful jewelry from all over the world. On the site you can shop a wide variety of collections from Thailand, Bali, Kenya, and Chile, just to name a few.

It's also an ethically managed site. The founder, Patricia Pinkney, only works with Fair Trade organizations, making sure that the artisans who create the jewelry are fairly compensated for their work. She also make a point of finding crafts made by women in emerging markets, and helping them by creating a market for their work.

As part of their support for women all over the world, and in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pangea Collection is donating $10 to breast cancer research for each of these beautiful sterling silver heart bracelets sold in October.

The bracelet is handcrafted by the talented silversmiths of Taxco, Mexico. The classic style goes with every kind of outfit, and shows that you support breast cancer awareness, year round.

Criminal fashion: Swedish prisoners get new designer uniforms

Filed under: Style in the News

While we don't usually follow the latest trends at prison fashion shows, we do like to keep up with fashion crimes and cruel and unusual fashion punishment. This news would fall into the latter category. Apparently, Sweden's female inmate uniforms -- consisting of unisex gray t-shirts and sweatpants -- have long been considered a crime against femininity by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

That's why a group of student designers were asked to get the ladies into some respectable rags. Aspiring fashionistas from the Beckmans School of Design went to work at designing cheap, durable and more effeminatly-colored uniforms. The new styles will allow women to carry out their sentences with a bit of self-esteem and individuality -- since the new uniforms will include subtle variations. Also, since many of the inmates happen to be meth-addicts, the uniforms can expand as they gain weight.

The school may have designed the more humane outfits, but they're not doing all the work -- inmates will construct the uniforms. BTW, this is not a picture of of the new uniforms.

Animal Fashion takes over the runway

Filed under: Runway Trends, Accessories, Clothing

Some of the outfits we see on the runway during fashion week are totally outlandish and unnatural. Or so you might think.

Over at Lemondrop, the new AOL site for women, they have an amazing gallery that pairs wild runway with the wild kingdom. It turns out all those designers are just visiting the zoo or watching a lot National Geographic documentaries.

Birds, lizards, snakes and aquatic life come in some pretty wild shapes and colors...which is not to say we want to turn them into hats, shoes or bags. But we wouldn't turn our noses up at some of the "inspired by" fashions in the gallery. That gold ram headdress is perfect for a cocktail we're going to next week!

Fashionable football fans - Options for the ladies

Football season is upon us, and we here at StyleList could not be more excited. We love the fervor leading up to the game. We love the social aspect and the tailgating. And, of course, we love football itself, even if some of the uniforms aren't as stylish as we'd like.

When attending a game, tailgate. or party, you probably want to wear something that shows your support for your team. However, this year we're going to ask you to get a little creative. Do you really think your old t-shirt and jeans is the best ensemble you can come up with? You dress well every other day, especially for social events -- this should be no different.

Go topless - it's your right!

Filed under: Style for a Cause

If, ahem, plus sized men can show their assets on the beach, then women should be able to do the same. GoTopless.org is "a US organization, claiming that women have the same constitutional right to be bare chested in public places as men."

Andrea Savage gives guys a clue

Filed under: Men, Celebrities with Style, Style Tip of the Day

(Click the photo for Andrea's 10 tips on having sex with women)

If you read Esquire, and you really should, then you are familiar with the monthly feature "Ten Things You Don't Know About Women" in which a very attractive female celebrity throws out 10 chunks of insightful knowledge. In theory these nuggets of wisdom, if heeded, should have such positive results as better dates or a stronger marriage- if nothing else they should help a guy get lucky.

This month it was Andrea Savage of Step Brothers that offered up the 411 on the fairer, less hairy and better smelling sex.

Here are a few of her suggestions:

  • Wedding rings need to be sparkly to remind us not to have sex with other people.
  • If teenage boys knew that no matter what they look like, knowing how to dance will get them laid at every wedding they attend in their twenties, cotillions would be wait-list only.
  • We don't understand your fascination with boobs, but we're happy you have it.

See, that's the kind of stuff your buddies could never tell you, no matter how many beers you have. That's wisdom, Holmes.

Here's the whole enchilada:

Secret Obsession: The banned Eva Mendes ad (NSFWish)

The following commercial was banned from television and may not be suitable for work:

(Click here to see still shots from the ad campaign)

Eva Mendes seems to be everywhere lately, and almost always naked. We aren't complaining.

The above video (assuming that YouTube hasn't pulled it for boob-related reasons) is an ad for Calvin Klein's latest fragrance for women, Secret Obsession. It was banned from television due to some finding it a bit steamy- and nipply.

We got your murves right here, ladies and bear-lovers

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men, Celebrities with Style

We always talk about women and how thin or "curvy" they are. As nice as it is to remind folks that women come in all shapes and sizes, we're tired of hearing all about what straight men like.

It's parity time. Here's the scoop (it's certainly not the skinny) on man shapes: sure, we like our men with "murves" but not so much that they can't fly on commercial airlines.

Really! Everyone likes Christian Bale better Batman Burly than all manorexic for The Machinist. And calling Colin Farrell: time to pound the Guinness and get manly again! It's important to have some meat on your bones. Looking like you can survive a little hibernation can be downright sexy. It gives off a sense of strength and stability. On the other end of the spectrum, if you can't find pants with zippers and pockets in your size, it's gone too far.

These are the most common categories of men with curves:

  • Cubs - usually occurs in younger men, once they discover beer, especially if they're a bit, erm, hairy.
  • Man weight - when they no longer have a smaller waist than their girlfriends. In the best scenarios it's "all muscle."
  • Burly - somewhere between here and man weight is the perfect Christian Bale/Batman moment. Between here and Bear: Russell Crowe.
  • Bear - Big. Hairy. Totally male. This is where most men wind up, especially if they are funny or a fan of Kathy Griffin.
  • Brando - like that episode when Homer Simpson wore a muumuu.

Ladies, flaunt your forties

Forty is apparently a big deal for women. Men, widely accepted to become distinguished with age, don't really notice 40 or the subsequent years known has the "40 somethings." They only notice things like how suddenly there aren't any professional athletes their age or that movies they love start issuing 25th Anniversary specials. These are the signs of aging for men. However, such things are more likely to raise a forty than cause much grief.

What do high heels and 600 pound gorillas have in common?

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

There's no doubt that we love the way our legs look in extremely high heels -- put us in a 4" or 5" heel, and we'll show you legs that seem to go on forever, like our pal Gwyneth Paltrow over to the right. However, the New York Times recently had an article about the high, high heel and how women walk in them.

And, of course, the answer is the same as how one would move a 600 pound gorilla -- very carefully.
