Scarlett Johannson misses Cannes because she's a diva

Filed under: Hair Care, Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

So far Woody Allen's new movie, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, has been a huge success at Cannes. There was a ten minute standing ovation after the film's debut, and critics and fans alike have applauded the film's stars from the moment they stepped on the red carpet.

Well, some of the film's stars, anyway -- Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall got to enjoy the praise, but Scarlett Johansson didn't make the trip to Cannes this year because the studio wouldn't accommodate her requests.

Don't mess with Woody Allen's image

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

The guys at American Apparel may consider Woody Allen their spiritual leader, but apparently they didn't read up on his teachings regarding celebrity endorsements, or copyright infringement. Woody's legal team filed a lawsuit yesterday against the clothing company, seeking damages in excess of $10 million for using an unlicensed image of the filmmaker in some of their billboard advertisements. The billboards went up last May in New York and LA, where they were on display for about a week before they got pulled. In the gospel according to Woody: you use an image from one of his films without permission, you get served.

Barney's New York launches Versace menswear

Versace launched their updated "revitalized" menswears collection exclusively at Barney's this past week. Donatella hosted the big night. Aside from playing in the Versace display window made of tinfoil, she also spent time mingling with all the random celebrities who showed up. I'm pretty sure the guest list was made up of basically any A-lister in New York at the time, regardless of (lack of) connections with the fashion world.

Woody Allen was there. He says he loves Versace sweaters. And in the "How I wish I could have been a fly on the wall" conversation of the night, sources say that he had a little chat with Gossip Girls hottie Leighton Meester (seriously, who names their child Leighton?!?). Leighton told Woodie, "Donatella is, like, kind of the sh*t." Why would you say that to Woodie Allen of all people?

Now let's get back to the topic at hand -- fashion. The creative director of Barney's, Simon Doonan said, "Every guy wants a moiré suit. He just may not have realized it yet."

Guys, you heard the man. You want a moiré suit. Go out and buy one now. Simon's sending you subliminal message.

ScaJo in her undies

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Have you ever noticed the way that models want to become actresses and actresses want to become models? Following in the footsteps of actress-turned-models Uma Thurman (who was technically a model before becoming an actress) and Jennifer Lopez, screen darling Scarlett Johansson has landed one of the most coveted fashion campaigns: Louis Vuitton. In the spring/summer 2007 print ads the unstoppable ScaJo poses for the French fashion house wearing nothing but her undies.

Kind of makes me wonder how old Woody Allen is reacting to this news. Allen has, on more than one occasion, admitted to finding Johansson "sexually overwhelming" in her clothes. But Scarlett in her unmentionables? Now that might be entering into heart attack-inducing territory for the beloved director.

We fashion our wardrobes after films

kirsten dunst as marie antoinetteIn case you haven't noticed, there is quite a hullabaloo surrounding the movie Marie Antoinette, and it seems that the fashion world has taken to it as well. Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette appeared on the most recent Vogue magazine, and elements of the style have showed up on the runways, from high hair (oh, how I am hating my wispy fine stick straight hair that doesn' do anything but hang there) to puffy skirts to brocade fabrics.

But it's not just Marie Antoinette this year. Film has definitely affected the fashion world (and vice versa, I suppose) through the decades, and Forbes has put together a short list of some of the more influential films.
  • Funny Face - Audrey Hepburn in "the infamous black turtleneck and skinny pants" that is now the highlight of a Gap campaign
  • The Birds - "the quintessential Hitchcockian look"
  • Belle Du Jour - "pilgrim" flats
  • Bonnie & Clyde - shoulder length bob, pencil skirts and berets
  • Annie Hall - "oversized, exaggerated menswear alongside earth-toned, patchwork smocks. It's messy, incoherent and ... altogether genius."
  • Out Of Africa - white linens, safari jackets and all things khaki
  • Working Girl - the Power Suit
  • Singles - the definitive grunge look: floral dresses topped with lumberjack flannels and paired with combat boots
  • Almost Famous - hippie chic -- with shearling coats, floppy hats and Frye boots.Secretary
  • Secretary - "the sexy librarian"
  • Stepford Wives - prim and proper '50s look

NYC's Bblessing for men

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Stores We Love, Men

It's tough being both handsome and smart. Sure, George Clooney can do it, and, yes, Wes Anderson can do it, and, yes, Woody Allen can almost do it (he's got the "smart" part down, at least) ... but what about all the other men in the world?

Fortunately, there's Bblessing on New York's Orchard Street. As Horacio Silva reports in the New York Times, Bblessing is the thinking man's clothing store. In addition to hip clothes, Bblessing offers up stylish books, CDs and smart-guy accessories. As if it couldn't get any cooler, Bblessing houses Breakbeat Science, a record store within the clothing store.

So, is it ultimately good to get one's clothing, reading and listening all in one stop? Maybe. Or maybe it's a mixed bblessing ...

Scarlett [hearts] Reebok

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

With an impressive resume of performances in movies like Lost in Translation to Ghost World, Scarlett Johansson has parlayed her way into the hearts of directors and audiences alike.

Woody Allen [hearts] Scarlett.
Sofia Coppola [hearts] Scarlett.

But who does Scarlett [heart]?

For one, she [hearts] her boyfriend, Josh Hartnett. And now, apparently, she [hearts] Reebok.

Johansson just signed on to a signature line of clothing called "Scarlett [Hearts] RBK", which will be available in stores next spring. What will this fashion convergence mean? According to Reebok, you can expect "fashion-forward, athletic-inspired footwear and apparel signature collection." Why Scarlett? Because "Scarlett embodies the pulse points of our brand-individuality, authenticity and a life lived to the fullest in perpetual motion,"

Jeeze, sounds like Reebok [hearts] Scarlett.
