Dress of the Day: Daryl K Black Leather Zipper Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

daryl k black leather zipper dressSome Friday nights all we want to do is get home, tear off our work clothes, slip into our flannel PJs and flip through trashy fashion magazines in front of the fireplace until we fall asleep at 9 PM.

Some Friday nights we want to make a quick change in the car from "business casual" into hot LBD, kick off our flats and throw on a pair of 5" stiletto heels with an ankle strap, and head out to cause some trouble.

At first glance, Daryl K's dress fits the bill for little black dress with it's high collar with a modest cut-out at the neck, but when you look again, it's also hot because it's made of leather and trimmed with zippers up and down two sides of the front, and at the pockets. The dress is on sale at Milk for $287 (originally $410).

Styles that stick: hoodies

The ever-practical sweatshirt known as the hoody long ago broke with its music-geek origins only to become a fashionable staple that has stood the test of time. (Or at least the test of the last decade...)

Originally made from flocked cotton with a simple drawstring hood, modern designers have taken the basic idea of the zip-up and converted it into a luxury idea that comes in a wide array of fabrics, ranging from cashmere to velour.

And what is it about the hoody that keeps us infatuated? Some would says it's the hood, but I'm inclined to say it's the zipper. As Jonathon recently pointed out in a post, zippers are by far the most compelling of the notions (buttons, clasps, etc).

From greasy-haired Elliott Smith wannabes to Sid Vicious tributants and celebrities emulator star-struck with Paris Hilton, the easy-on, easy-off handling of the hoody makes it a natural choice for an infinite number of occasions.

Are you feeling sporty? Try a Juicy Couture hoody (but not the pants, mind you. What do you think this is -- 2002?).
Are you feeling bohemian? Throw on a cashmere hoody with a cute dress that almost passed its season.
Are you feeling casual? Hoodies and jeans couldn't find better companions.

This fall, as you transition from the long, warm days of summer to the brisk air of autumn, keep yourself feeling rakish and toasty with a hoody in hand.

Hooray for zippers

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing

My favorite fashion accessories is back for Fall -- pointless zippers! I remember owning red plaid pants in the 90s so full of random pockets, zippers and ties that you'd think I was using them to trek through isolated forests in far-off corners of the globe (when really I just used them to hide cigarettes from my parents) -- I so wish I had them now.

The 2007 incarnation looks more like an altered, nerdy version of something Kurt Cobain would've worn (rather than the punked-out threads I was sporting in high school), but it's incredibly cool, nonetheless.

The cardigan at right, created by the designers at Stray Boys, has all the right touches -- low V-neck, horizontal stripes, lots of black, and, of course, the zipper. Plus, super-extra-bonus points for making the zip diagonal instead of up and down.

Tip: instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a new designer wardrobe, hit your local thrift stores now, buy up all the cool-looking sweaters before the weather gets cold, add your own zippers, and voila! Fashion success!

Zippers go green

When it comes to being eco-friendly you may have decided to opt for organic cotton or perhaps sustainable fabrics like bamboo, but have you thought about your zipper? Ideal Fastener Corp. has announced that they will be using Repreve recycled yarn in the zipper tape for a new line of products called the Ideal Earth brand. The Repreve yarn is made out of 100-percent-recycled materials reducing the need for virgin polyester. The two companies say that every 150 Ideal Earth jacket zipper tapes or 500 IDEAL Earth™ pant zipper tapes manufactured with Repreve is equivalent to one gallon of gasoline saved. That's not a huge number but it's a start. Now how do they go about making the rest of the zipper eco-friendly?
