Will Cleansing Oils Bring On the Zits?

facial cleansing oils

Oil slick: Shu Uemura Skin Purifier, Nude Cleansing Oil, and Kiehl's Superbly Restorative Argan Body Cleansing Oil.

To escape the oppressive heat during my trip to Turkey, I found myself ducking into some of the local spas where the AC -- and the treatments -- were kickin'.

However, I was hoping for a facial menu dotted with minty, Noxema-fresh services. No dice! Nearly every treatment incorporated some sort of rich, oily cleanser.

And come to think of it, a lot of great beauty brands are putting more oil-based cleansers into their skincare lines.

Wouldn't the combination of rising summer temps and products that resemble the "oil spill" atop your pizza, be a recipe for breakouts or major bacne?

Not so, says Ava Shamban, a dermatologist in Beverly Hills.

It's Acne Awareness Month! And Proactiv Says You Can Blame Your Parents for Your Zits

Adult acne is on the rise due to increased stress levels (thanks, crappy economy!). Photo: Getty

Did anyone talk about their acne before Proactiv? It's been almost 15 years since those now-ubiquitous infomercials came into our lives and made us realize we are not alone - Jessica Simpson get zits too!

Co-creator of Proactiv, Dr. Kathy Fields, says," The stigma of acne is dramatically lifted thanks to Proactiv. People used to deny that they even had it, but now you hear people bragging about how they got rid of their acne."

You're not a teenager anymore, so why are you still dealing with a teenage problem? Acne can be an issue for adult skin as well as adolescent (don't tell me you've never contemplated wrapping up in a scarf to hide an embarrassing blemish!), but because grown up skin has different needs, adult acne requires a different solution than the OTC products marketed at those entering puberty. We've got the scoop on exactly what you should be looking for.

Tip of the day: You are what you eat

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Juicy! There is no denying the truth behind the phrase, "You are what you eat." A perfect example is the huge zit you always get after housing a greasy pizza. You can also put a positive spin on the saying and change the way you eat for good.

Summer is the best time to kick start better eating habits for your skin, hair, body, and even your mind. There is so much juicy fruit and yummy grilled chicken around that it's easier to say no to macaroni salad and the ice cream man.

Unexpected drugstore blemish remedy

Filed under: Skin Care, Steals and Deals

Neosporin First Aid Antibiotic Ointment
It doesn't matter how old or young you are, no one likes to get blemishes. Recently blemishes were practically attacking my skin and I had been actively seeking a skincare solution. I was able to find one miracle product; unfortunately that product seriously broke the bank. I needed something effective that I could afford.

Enter the most unlikely source of blemish relief, Neosporin. My best friend's aunt drunkenly slipped me a tube of the "white stuff" during a Christmas party and told me she 'just handed me the ultimate beauty secret.'

At the time I had no idea that her crazy secret just might work. A few days later I sprouted a nasty pimple on my chin and reached for my tube of "white stuff." I slathered the Neosporin on my chin and waited for a miracle. Two days later my blemish was history and with no scaring left behind.

Get this miracle in a tube at your local drugstore for less than $6.

Even Tyra Banks gets pimples

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Celebrities with Style

What you see on your right is no clever camera trick. No Photoshop wizardry. It is the real Tyra Banks with an actual pimple. Shock! Horror! Chaos in the streets!

It appears, back on Black Friday, the model-turned-talk-show-host bought some zit cream for $200. Half that price seems like a ridiculous sum of money for anything that comes in a bottle smaller than Rhode Island, but, nevertheless, Tyra decided to give it a shot.

And, lo and behold, it doesn't work.

Tyra was, understandably, disappointed that the cream seemed to breed pimples rather than subdue them, and subsequently shared the photo at right in an email to her fans. Not that I subscribe to her email list or anything -- I found the photo here.
