Halloween Crafts: No-Carve Decoupage Pumpkins

HuffPost Social Reading

In Random Recast, I find new ways to upgrade the ordinary things in our lives. And this week, it's all about pumpkins.

Today is a new twist on pumpkin decorating, thanks to a cool decoupage treatment. Decoupage is one of those crafts, by the way, that sounds way harder than it actually is. All you're doing is gluing bits of paper to an item (in this case, dictionary pages to a pumpkin), then sealing the covered surface. Yes, you can use a special decoupaging product like Plaid's Mod Podge, but I honestly use a mix of three parts glue to one part water. Easy, cheap, simple and doesn't require an extra trip to the craft store. (And because you're sealing the pumpkin, it'll last for weeks without falling apart.) Instead of dictionary pages, I plan on using images from my old 1965 World Book encyclopedia. Flags of the world, anyone?

This photo came courtesy of the October issue of Country Living. Check out their other pumpkin decorating ideas.

I don't like this pumkin that way. Does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to carve the pumkins like they did on the old Rossanne TV show? Those were the coolest things ever.

Nothing, though, smells better than the scent of a freshly cut pumpkin and a candle burning inside; the two are inseparable, classic, and essential.

I remember Halloween, way back when--back home in a small town, and as a child--the smell of pumpkin-Jack'o'lanterns scent wafting through the cool autumn night-time air. This brings back wonderful memories.

There is a glue called Mod Podge, and they sell it at craft stores. It is the best for stuff like this :) Good luck!

Laura, Mod Podge is usually used for decoupaging, but for the DIY recipe above...I just use plain white school glue.

fantastic idea. Pumpkins will be decayed or moldy if they are in warm weather or damaged. Need to stand in cool places to last them longer.

It would be nice if these stories would just admit that the stuff they are using has been in antique shops for decades. No one goes into antique shops anymore so we have stopped carrying this sort of material. Salvage stores charge very high prices for this stuff, antique shops are just trying to get rid of it. Soapstone sinks have been offered by us since the 1980s, with only a few dealers buying them, if they were the shallow ones, not the cellar type shown here. Depression glass as seen on the shelf, we can't sell anymore, to cheap to take up space in the shop. Old wood, I can get you barns full of it.

Craigslist.com may hurt vintage and antique businesses. I loved to go to 2 cosignment stores which both are now out of business after Craigslist started. I agree with you that I have seen decoupaged pumpkins before.
