Halloween Crafts: 6 No-Carve Pumpkin Ideas

HuffPost Social Reading

When it comes to creating show-stopping pumpkins for Halloween, you've normally been caught between two options: a. trying your best to master carving and b. a not-so-sophisticated paint job. Option "a" always leads to arguments, hurt feelings and low self-esteem, while option "b" ends up looking like a kid did it. There's nothing wrong with kid crafts, but when people mistake your handiwork for an elementary school child's...cue the sad trombone music.

So I found 6 ideas that don't involve complex carving, yet still make a stylish splash. Some are more time-consuming than others, but all can be adapted to fit your time constraints. Check them out in this slideshow.

In this no-carve pumpkin idea, the gourd is really secondary to the decoration. Bold and eye-catching, chunky flat-backed acrylic jewels (the kind you loved as a kid) adorn a painted pumpkin. While any color paint would work, this black hue really lets the jewels take center stage. And what to do about the dull-colored pumpkin stump? Make it metallic.

frykitty here--thanks for linkin' my blingkin! For the record, that's a fake pumpkin I picked up at Target. It was already black. Just in case you thought I wasn't lazy enough.

I was never any good at carving jack-o-lanterns. This year I just decided to draw the face on with a marker. Trashy? Probably.

I used to buy those fake pumpkins at Joanne's or Michaels when they went on sale and then I would prime them and then spray paint and then I would handpaint roses all the way around. Sometimes I would take the stem off and stick fake flowers in the hole and finish off with some hat pins or a ribbon. Sold them on Ebay and they can be used year after year because I always finished them off with a sealer.

I just have one question: Why would I NOT want to carve the pumpkin?

Some of them are interesting, but nothing says Halloween like a proper Jack-O-Lantern. NOTHING.
