For our first annual holiday dress guide, we enlisted four of the long-legged beauties to model a plethora of party dresses. The resulting images - taken by photographer Eric Ray Davidson - showcase the beautiful gams of the Rockettes and fanciful garments created by the likes of Diane von Furstenberg, Tracy Reese and more.

Shot in the legendary concert hall, this year's range of flouncy cocktail frocks dovetailed nicely with the impressive art deco surroundings in the Rockettes' performance space. There were gold and silver shimmering numbers, one-shoulder confections, and ornate pieces with detailed beading and bejeweled necklines.

Getting into the holiday spirit yet?

My Style: Classic, easy. Two kids make mornings tricky.

Holiday Gifts I Want: Give me beautiful basics! I like my winter work wardrobe (I'm all about the sweater dress this year!), but need clothes that look put together on the weekends. I want some flat casual boots, jeans with a forgiving mid-section and a fabulous bag that can hold everything for walks around the city with my family. And don't forget wake-up make-up; I am always happy to find that in my stocking.
Alright, ladies, sharpen your talons.

You're going to need them to claw through the fashion-hungry throngs waiting to get their paws on a pair of these lustful Jimmy Choo & Hunter wellies which just became available again after a quick spring sellout.

As we reported back in April, Jimmy Choo and Hunter collaborated on a rare specimen of ultra chic rain boots.

The croc embossed style -- with gold buckle hardware and metal rivets -- had woman hoping to channel their inner Kate Moss clamoring to snag a pair.

It's no surprise that the boot quickly sold out on both sides of the Atlantic, but not before celebs including Rachel Bilson, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston had secured theirs.

The Jimmy Choo for Hunter boots, which retail for $395, are finally back in stock at Jimmy Choo boutiques. Run, don't walk!

Jimmy Choo seems to have a foot in everything these days! Read about the luxury brand's collaboration with H&M.

Fall and winter coats come in so many beautiful shapes, colors and textures this season, we almost can't wait for it to get really cold.

Even the puffer coat is taking on new slimmer proportions. "If you're wearing one, you won't also need a big heavy sweater," says stylist Meg Goldman. "Opt for skinny pants or a skinny boot. Break up the proportions." Should you prefer a feminized military coat or more ladylike looks -- they're all on the racks this season. And even though some coats certainly quality as investment items, there are many styles out there that appear to be much more expensive than they truly are.

It's not hard to find a look perfect for your style and budget -- we've narrowed it down down for you. Look through the photos below, taken on a cold day near the Brooklyn Bridge, to see some of the season's best looks.
The checked pattern has never gotten so much play. Tartan-loving fashionistas have plenty of options this season. Case-in-point: the a long coat, an au courant cape, or even a cooler-than-thou motorcycle jacket seen here.

Should you choose plaid as your exterior canvas, keep the rest of your outfit relatively clean so as to avoid looking like a mismatched Christmas present.
Which isn't to say that there isn't a place for mismatched patterns - lest we learn nothing from designer Dries van Noten!- but pick one item (ie Christine's leopard print scarf, right) and keep it in a relatively similar color scheme so the look is not too forced.

How dare budding fashionistas readily exclude real women from rocking trends that they started? We enlisted stylist Phillip Bloch and Laura Bennett - "Project Runway" alum and host of MSN.com's StyleStudio - to help wrest back some control and recover that high fashion hijack.
Slouchy, baggy, cuffed and rolled, with rough and ready rips and tears – this fall's jean looks more like a denim Snuggie than the figure-hating, leg-hugging looks of recent years.
"But wear it less torn, the tear should be small if at all and you gotta mix it with a great shoe. " Even star moms are devotees of the boyfriend jean. (Case-in-point: Mrs. Tom Cruise, left) who is credited with bringing the look to the forefront of fashion.

James Devaney, WireImage

TEEN TREND #2: SHOULDER PADS
Call it the Bold Shoulder. "They're not exactly sculpted the way they were in the 80s, but you're seeing a lot more big shoulders," explains Bennett. "It's not the big, brazen shoulder or football player, but it's definitely got a little pad and bump at the edge," Bloch agrees.

Balmain

Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho, WireImage

How to steal the deal: The key here is how you wear it, not what you wear. "For women, as opposed to girls, mix padded shoulders with obviously modern accessories and hair – if you're old enough to have worn it in the 1980s, you don't want to look like you're stuck there," Bennett warns. Keep your coif effortless, and those shoulder pads will look less Joan and Alexis, more Carrie and co. "Very loose and casual, this has to be worn with very light, airy hair – tousled and beachy, like a one-sided pony tail," Bloch notes, "And to keep hair young, if it's gonna be 'done', it should be shiny and not teased."

Bauer-Griffin

TEEN TREND #3: NEON
The runways and catwalks looked like road safety PSAs for fall, covered in headlight and -line-grabbing neon colors: green, pink, yellow, orange. There were even slinky all-dayglo dresses.

How to steal the deal: Hit American Apparel next time your daughter does. The hipster GAP is crammed with funky neon pieces priced at less than a lesson of driver's ed. "Don't spend a lot of money – buy it as a t-shirt to throw under a blazer," Bloch advises. Ditto a scarf or a tank top for a splash of brights.

If all else fails, one of those aforementioned slinky dayglo dresses (like Lucy Liu's) just might do the trick.

Soul Brother, FilmMagic

TEEN TREND #4: LEATHER
Skin on skin's a major fall trend. "It's everywhere: dresses, skirts, motorcycle jackets," raves Bennett.

Matthew Williamson

Karl Prouse, Catwalking/Getty Images

How to steal the deal: "Think Moneypenny with sass, not motorcycle with gas," says Bennett. "Choose more classically cut pieces that have just been done in leather instead of fabric – a great simple sheath dress, a skirt that comes down to the knee made out of leather. The silhouette is a little more classic."

Kevin Mazur, WireImage for Frappe Inc.

TEEN TREND #5: THE STATEMENT BOOT
"The statement purse has been taken over by a statement shoe – women are obsessed with shoes because if your dress size goes from 6 to 16 any given season, you shoes stay the same size." This fall, it's boots that were made for vamping, from shoe-boots, platforms, biker boots.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Imaxtree.com

How to steal the deal: Focus on platforms and chunky heels. "Don't go for a four inch platform, but a nice half inch is comfortable for running around in and it's actually practical," says Bennett. "A lot of trends this season were born from practicality in this economy and environment."

Bloch thinks the statement boot trend is the one every woman, mother or daughter, should follow this fall. "With a thick heel and a platform, you could jump in that SUV and go hit the supermarket."

Right on the heels of having her second child last month, son Sparrow, Nicole Richie is launching a new women's contemporary clothing line called Winter Kate, reports WWD.

As if the mini fashion icon isn't busy enough, what with two little ones under the age of two, her House of Harlow 1960 accessories line and a maternity collection for A Pea in the Pod.

What would want to make her take on another project right now? "It feels as though I've always been working on this collection, but officially I started putting it together in early 2009," Richie told the paper. "I've wanted to design a clothing collection for a very long time."

The 27-piece line boasts plenty of Richie's signature boho chic style. There are tops, vests and bed jackets in vintage-inspired crepe, silk and chiffon, reports WWD.

"I probably wear the same two pairs of jeans every day as the background to a fabulous top," she told the paper. "Bed jackets are a staple of my wardrobe because they are a gorgeous way to give jeans and a white T-shirt a completely different look."

The collection also includes, dresses, tunics and jackets.

Cynthia Rowley is known among the fashion set for her summer style in local surfing destination Montauk, NY (aka, the Hamptons).

Now, the designer is using her hang ten expertise in a collaboration with Roxy.

"Cynthia Rowley for Roxy," the 40-piece spring 2010 collection will feature functional pieces such as wetsuits and swimwear, but also borrow from the surfer lifestyle with neoprene ballet flats and pencil skirts, knit hoodies -- to keep warm while waiting for that perfect wave -- and canvas duffel weekend bags for your beach getaway.

Rowley says of the collaboration, "The most important thing as a designer is to tell a story, and everything we do contributes to the story. This is an authentic and genuine expression of that, as surfing is something I love to do."

And the well-priced Rowley/Roxy partnership (wetsuits, $180; denim shorts, $60) is no short-sighted affair: The collection will roll out new styles over the next three years.

Launching in March 2010 exclusively at Barneys New York in the U.S,, while Colette in Paris will be the only store in Europe carrying the collection, Cynthia Rowley for Roxy's surfer chic offerings will be the perfect addition to your spring wardrobe.

This isn't the designer's only collaboration of late, Rowley downsized her chic style for a major retailer.

Cynthia Rowley for Roxy - A Surfer Chic Collaboration originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. A long-time fave of the over-50 set, fashion designer Eileen Fisher is now angling for a hipper clientele -- but if she manages to hook the cool kids, will she lose her loyal fans?

Fisher is going after a younger, more fashion-forward crowd with its latest collection and ad campaign, as reported by The New York Times.

"She has subtly tweaked its offerings, highlighting skinny tank tops, leggings and jeans and trimmed-down cardigans... Her advertisements now feature models who glower as convincingly as any on the runways," the story reports.

"Gone, for the moment, are the silver-haired models smiling serenely into the distance."

Bad decision, cries Geri Brin, founder of the soon-to-be-launched site faboverfifty.

"Despite the size and affluence of this 'silver-haired' group, many fashion and cosmetic companies continue to chase the younger market," Brin wrote on her blog.

"They don't think it's cool to pursue women over 50. They'd all be wise to put their thinking caps back on and figure out how to capture our attention -- not to mention our discretionary income."

And she's talking to you, Eileen Fisher.

"Send your branding agency back into outer space," Brin advises. "Older women can and do wear hip clothes."

Tom Ford's female fans are about to get a line of their own.

The former Gucci creative director has officially acknowledged that he is launching a womenswear line soon.

Ford, who has been busy flirting with film, was in Tokyo promoting his new movie, "A Single Man," when he talked to WWD about the upcoming women's line.

With the tough economy, even the well-known designer -- who already has a successful men's line and fragrance collection -- is facing the challenge of securing backers.

"Financing is extremely expensive right now, so if we find financing in the right situation we'll be able to start [a women's collection] soon. If we don't, we may have to wait awhile," Ford told the site.

But the designer isn't giving up directing films anytime soon. Ford is waiting for his "A Single Man" premieres to wrap then moving onto a new cinematic project, says the source.

With the introduction of Tom Ford's womenswear, could a steamy ad campaign starring Brad Pitt (a huge Tom Ford Menswear fan) and Angelina Jolie be far behind? We think not!
From tall boots to booties, cowboy boots to classic black boots, there was plenty of variety on the feet of fashionable women when photographer Alys Kenny took to the streets with her trusty camera.
Bridal Fashion Week happens twice a year -- once in October and again in April.

We get a sneak peek at thousands of amazing, new wedding dresses from the industry's top designers (they'll show up in bridal salons this spring).

Many designers host runway shows, while others show off their dresses in a more intimate setting: by appointment, usually in a loft space or a large hotel suite.

This year is going to be particularly exciting because we're featuring four (yes, four!) LIVE runway shows on TheKnot.com, and these are some seriously incredible celebrity designers: Claire Pettibone (Saturday at 11 am ET), Jenny Packham (Saturday at 5 pm ET), Monique Lhuillier (Sunday at 11 am ET) and Badgley Mischka (Sunday at 3 pm ET).

We'll also bring you bridal fashion reports via our "vlog" (aka video blog!) all weekend long on TheKnot.com Fashion Channel.

Oh, and if you miss any of the weekend action, don't worry -- we'll recap everything for you with a special fashion edition of our show, The Knot LIVE, Monday at 3 pm ET on TheKnot.com.

See you at the shows!
On the heels of announcing their collection for HSN, design duo Badgley Mischka is at it again -- this time making wedding frocks for the recession-impaired bride.

The collection, created under the Mark & James label (the designers' names are Mark Badgley and James Mischka), consists of 12 styles that will range in price from $2,000 to $4,000, less than half the price of the designers' signature bridal line and will be available at the brand's existing bridal channels this spring.

"We decided to design this collection now as a broader expansion of our Mark & James brand concept and to offer the Badgley Mischka label to a wider range of brides," Badgley told StyleList.

"We know not all brides today can spend the money for one of our couture bridal gowns so we wanted to offer them options that are just as glamorous as our signature bridal collection but without the couture price tag."
Continue reading Badgley Mischka Designs Affordable Wedding Dresses for Brides on a Budget

Badgley Mischka Designs Affordable Wedding Dresses for Brides on a Budget originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 16:55:00 EST. Q. How do celebrities manage to wear a new outfit for every event? Don't they ever recycle?

A. Absolutely! While A-listers usually are loaned designer gowns for the Emmys and Oscars, you can definitely catch other celebs repeating looks at less high-profiel events. Anna Wintour wore her favorite Carolina Herrera dress for multiple public appearances this year.

Another form of recycling? When two celebs wear the same thing (oops!) Check out our photos here.
The fashion world continues to go mad for "Mad Men."

In honor of the debut of the limited edition "Mad Men" suit, Brooks Brothers converted the fifth floor of its Madison Avenue store in Midtown Manhattan Tuesday to a classically masculine bar, complete with "patrons" (mannequins) clad in outfits borrowed from the show's wardrobe.

Martinis, Manhattans and merriment were the order of the evening, though it was not quite as boisterous as a Sterling Cooper office party.

The show's costume designer Janie Bryant, dressed in a modern sequined dress from Jovanni and a Dolce & Gabbana tailored jacket, shared some of her secrets about our favorite characters with StyleList.

StyleList: What's the style of Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm)?

Bryant: For me, he's always very masculine, very minimal in his color palette with dark browns and grays -- always very masculine tones. Even if he wears a Glen plaid, it will be in the grays.

StyleList: In Rome, Don Draper wore a powder blue jacket -- it was as if a whole new day had dawned with Don Draper going casual.

Bryant: I designed that sports coat for him. They were on vacation. It was their romantic time together and we were seeing this couple in a different situation that we never seen them in. It was about that couple being in a different environment.

StyleList: Let's talk about Betty (played by January Jones). She has been wearing some interesting dresses, like the one she wore to the Rockefeller fundraiser at her house.
Last week, you got the scoop on the latest designer patterns.

And now you're just itchin' to get stitchin'. But before you start feeding your sewing machine all your expensive fashion fabric, make sure the pattern's going to fit properly by making a quick test garment first.

I fought this step for years and made dozens of outfits without even considering creating a test garment, or muslin, as it's called.

But, alas, I've reformed! While pajamas or a simple silhouette may not be as risky to whip up, if you really want your designer pattern to turn into a quality garment that you can treasure forever, then you definitely want it to fit. And that means doing a test run!

While fashion designers traditionally use muslin cloth to make a muslin, you can make your pattern mock-up out of any inexpensive fabric.

You'll want to cut the pieces of your pattern out and stitch it together quickly, try it on (on a friend or on a dress form), then make adjustments that you'll transfer to your fashion fabric. It's a lot easier than making alterations after the fact.
Continue reading DIY Design: See How Your Pattern Fits Before Making the Real Thing

DIY Design: See How Your Pattern Fits Before Making the Real Thing originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 14:41:00 EST. The Obamas got out their Sunday best to attend a service at St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. yesterday morning.

Mrs. O looked chic in a rosy pink Moschino skirt, that fell just below the knee, and matching flats.

The First Lady is clearly back to her belted cardigan ways, but this time she opted for a softer look with a brown satin ribbon to cinch her look.

And watch out for up-and-coming statement maker Malia (far right), who opted for bold, "Superman"-inspired color blocking.

Michelle Obama was casual compared to this gold Rodarte number.
Michelle Obama Style - Sunday Best originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 10:35:00 EST.
