The smoke and mirrors surrounding the beauty industry are slowing chipping away.

Thanks to outrage over airbrushing nightmares and models exposing the ugly side of modeling, is it possible that unattainable beauty ideals are fading?

The latest semi-scandal involves a television ad in the UK for L'Oréal Elvive Full Restore 5 hair care line (not available in the US). The ad (watch it above) features singer Cheryl Cole praising the collection for making her chestnut locks "full of life, replenished with healthy shine."

There's just one problem. Cole is wearing hair extensions -- and people are angry about it. The London Times reports that Cole has been not-so-secretly sporting extensions for several years now and they are a part of her look, but that hasn't stopped viewers from expressing their outrage.

L'Oréal's stance is that they are within their legal rights -- a message quickly flashes on the screen to state "styled with some natural hair extensions." Did you catch it?

So here's the question: Is this false advertising? And are women being force fed unrealistic visions of beauty that ultimately make them feel worse about themselves?

The other side of the coin is this -- who really believes it? Do women who see the ad really believe it's Cole's natural hair or is everyone jaded enough to realize what's going on? By now we've seen enough weekly tabloid "Stars Without Makeup" exposé features to see that even A-listers look like crud when they're at the grocery store.

This isn't the first (or last) time beauty ads have come under fire. Rimmel got in truh-ble a few years ago for digitally enhancing Kate Moss' eyelashes for a mascara ad.

Either these celebs are angling for a part in Broadway's "Chicago," or fedoras are the new cure for a bad hair day. Three female stars all rocked near-identical black fedoras in the past week.

Actress Marion Cotillard wore a fedora with jeans on a trek through New York's JFK airport on November 18.

Sharon Stone wore hers to a black tie event in New York City on November 17th.

And Beyoncé paired hers with a t-shirt dress while out and about in London last week.

We love the look best with an otherwise simple outfit--like Marion's sweater, jeans, and scarf. This way, it looks fresh and unintentional, instead of like you tried too hard for the "cool" vibe.

Time will tell if these hats become the big style for Fall, or if celebs just love to rely on them when they're not feeling up to par in the hair department.

We're the first to admit that we have an irrational love for Alexa Chung.

Ever since we first blogged about her last April, she's been wowing us with her wily, style-y ways.

But it's beauty moments like this that make us realize we're not just a guest on Stalk Talk -- and Chung really does deserve our reverence.

You see, last night (Nov 23rd) the MTV host attended the dressy 37th International Emmy Awards Gala wearing a messy updo featuring undone face-framing side braids.

We love this because the side-braided 'do is usually reserved for long-haired ladies (think Jennifer Aniston's Oscar hair style). But Chung proves us wrong, showing that the style looks just as good on sorter-length locks (Chung's end just below her ears, we, uh, think.)

And as opposed to braids being the ultimate girlie hair style (again, think Aniston), here, Chung makes them edgy and cool.

Perhaps the braid is on its way back to trend status -- replacing the reigning cooler-than-though 'do, the downtown ballerina bun. Only time, and Chung, will tell.
Style Stalker - Alexa Chung Rocks the Side Braid originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 00:01:00 EST.

Shakira's ladylike 'do. Photo: Getty Images

Shakira is famed for her wildly curly locks.

Which is why we paid extra attention to the lady like 'do the singer sported at the AMA's - they were so totally different from her usual look. We love it when stars step out of their comfort zones!

This is a perfect, easy hair style for those holiday parties, since it's so flattering: "Brushing hair directly back off the face complements everyone's face shape," says hairstylist Danielle Caputo.

But the key to the look is this: "When you finish the ponytail, it looks more polished to cover the elastic with your own hair," she says.

Take it from us, the hair gurus agree on this detail: Just last week celebrity hairstylist and salon owner Ted Gibson told us "Nothing is worse than a visible elastic in a ponytail. Nothing." We gulped as we covertly turned our head to hide our own very visible pony tail holder.

We'll be copping Shakira's style, and following the steps, below!
Nicole Kidman wowed the crowd with her blowout at the AMA's.
The star's normally curly locks were smooth and straight, with a sophisticated side part.
So how did Kidman tame her famous coils?
Celebrity hairstylist Danielle Caputo recommends this tip to guarantee super straight strands: "Mix a little bit of grooming cream with a frizz serum to infuse hair with moisture and act as a barrier against humidity."

It's also all about the brush. "One of the biggest obstacles to a sleek blow out is using the wrong brush," says Caputo. Put down those vent brushes and round brushes - a flat paddle brush with natural bristles will give the sleekest results. Natural bristles grab and hold on to hair best, while the shape will leave hair flat and straight (as opposed to the voluminous straight look a round brush will deliver).

For more of Caputo's tips on getting it straight, follow the steps for Straightening Curly Hair, below.

We thought Ashley Greene was the most gorgeous gal on the Twilight red carpet last night.

And no surprise that it was celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson who created the gorgeous updo (who, shhh, happens to be at StyleList HQ today filming some top secret videos with us - but more on that later).

Here's Gibson's lowdown on Ashley's gorgeous look.

STYLELIST: What are your tips for creating Ashley's look?

Ted Gibson: "Start off with a really good blow dry using Build It blow drying spray at the root to create ultimate volume. Apply Hairsheet styling on the rest of the hair then blowdry. To create that sexy texture, curl strands with a large barrel curling iron set on medium heat. Place hair into ponytail and finish with Tame it Shine Lotion for added texture and lightweight shine."

STYLELIST: How do you work with her extensions?

Ted Gibson: "Clip ins are the best. It is a piece that gives hair fullness and length for that perfect ponytail that every girl dreams about."

STYLELIST: How do you keep Ashley's hair healthy?

Ted Gibson: Goodnite replenishing hair repair serum is a perfect way to keep hair in good condition and scalps in balance

STYLELIST: What's your preparation like on a day like this, and how long does it take to do Ashley's hair?

Ted Gibson: "It takes over an hour to create sexy, voluminous hair."
Get Ashley Greene's Hip Ponytail originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 16:05:00 EST. Ashley Olsen has gone streaking!

The fashionable twin flaunted blue and green streaks in her hair for a Tim Burton tribute at The Museum of Modern Art on November 17.
Olsen's wildy-colored locks instantly reminded us of a model who strutted in Proenza Schouler's Spring 2010 runway show with sea green hair. But the designer-entrepreneur-actress added a feminine touch with loose, tousled waves to frame her rosy cheeks and pink lips.
Are you feeling this 'do? Is the hairstyle too avant-garde? Or is it a refreshing departure from the red carpet norm?
Ashley Olsen's Blue-Streaked Hair originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 13:43:00 EST.

Beachy waves aren't just for the summer time. And at last night's GQ "Men of the Year" Party, Amanda Seyfried showed that this classic 'do works in fall, too.

The "Mama Mia!" star channeled the '60s with her wavy strands, pulling back pieces at the crown to show off her trademark fresh face.

To mimic Seyfried's perfect beachy look, celebrity stylist Danielle Caputo suggests curling hair away from the face. "It creates a windswept effect and helps keep it from falling forward," she said. "Use a salt-water spray (which helps create that piece-y texture) at the roots and then all over to add texture."

TIP: If you overdose on your favorite styling product and don't have time to rewash your hair, try applying dry shampoo. It instantly absorbs excess oil and product build-up so hair looks freshly shampooed.

This A-list actress gets an A-plus for hair. At the 2008 CMA Awards, Reese Witherspoon gave her classic bob a simple lift. "She added body and texture without looking overdone," says celebrity stylist Gina Bertolotti.

To get the look: apply a volumizer directly to the roots of damp hair and rough dry with a blow dryer. Set the hair with Velcro rollers and let sit for five minutes. Remove the rollers, flip head upside down and blast hair with a shot of cool air from the blow dryer. Using a large barrel curling iron, add a few curls for enhanced softness. Finish with hairspray.

It was America the beautiful at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her sleek, side-swept ponytail was a red carpet head turner and the perfect complement to her strapless gown.
To get the look: If you have curly or textured hair, Bertolotti recommends applying a straightening balm to control frizz and ensure the hair stays smooth. Once applied, blow dry the hair straight, then use a two-inch barrel curling iron to flip the ends. Smooth on a drop of shine serum to tame flyaways and boost shine, then part the hair slightly off center and pull it back into a low ponytail.

Jessica Biel was the mane attraction at an awards show in Beverly Hills. Her perfectly tousled locks looked effortlessly stylish. "It's such a versatile look," says Bertolotti. "You can wear this style to a formal event or with a pair of jeans."
To get the look: Apply hair gel to damp hair and blow dry. "Hair gel creates a great base when adding curls," says Bertolotti. Working with two-inch sections, spray the hair with hairspray, curl with a small barrel curling iron (about one inch), and spray with hairspray again. The hairspray is essential to help hold the curl, adds Bertolotti. When finished, gently shake the head to loosen the curl and hairspray for additional hold.

At a gala in Washington, DC, Jennifer Lopez's elaborate updo looked like that of an 80s prom queen way too contrived. Had it been a little less labored and set further back on the head, she would have looked more modern, yet still glamorous enough for such a formal occasion.

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

Drew Barrymore took volume to a new and unflattering level. At the 2009 Golden Globe awards her hair looked ready for lift off, which made her face look tiny. A little less body (and flyaways) would have kept her hair and face in better proportion.

Steve Granitz, WireImage

Who else but Jennifer Aniston can pull off a French braid at an Oscar party? The star looked stunning in a simple, yet elegant style. "This look is a great way to keep your hair out of your face while still wearing it down," says Bertolloti. Plus, it works on the red carpet or a dinner out.
To get the look: Apply a wave enhancing spray to damp hair and allow to air dry for a naturally tousled effect. (You can also use a diffuser to create the same look in less time.) Grab a one-inch section of hair from the top front of the head that measure temple to temple. Apply a drop of styling cream to the section to control flyaways and hold the hair together while braiding. To French braid, pull small sections of hair from the face frame in and secure. If you can't French braid, Bertolotti says a regular braid secured to the head with bobby pins will create a similar effect.

Black (hair, that is) is definitely having its moment.

From rich espresso to jet black, Hollywood stars, pop singers, and models are dying their locks dark this fall.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz recently toned down her fiery red strands reportedly in preparation for her new role as Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical production of Chicago. While the rocker mommy is no stranger to the dark hue, we are a bit torn on Ashlee's hair transformation.

Actress Robin Wright nearly sent us into a beauty spiral when she debuted this deep shade at the New York City screening of The Private Lives of Pippa. But Wright's drastic shift from blonde to black brings out her cool, blue eyes and adds warmth to her pale skin.
Twilight starlet Kristen Stewart and model Agyness Deyn are also rocking black hairdos - whether sleek or blunt, the styles play up the versatility of the color.
Which celeb do you think should join the dark side? Would you dye your locks black?
The pop culture geniuses behind the highly addictive PopSugar network of Websites (which includes the always stylish FabSugar) sure have been busy.

After the recent launch of vampire-centric TwilightSugar, an homage to "Twilight," they've now introduced BellaTV, a video channel devoted to all things beauty.

The BellaSugar spin-off will air three new episodes each week -- covering everything from the latest hair and makeup trends to celebrity how-tos and insider tips.

In "Celebrity Secret Weapon" (above), hairstylist Daniel Erdman shows viewers how to achieve his client Sienna Miller's beachy waves.
Her long, dark locks have mesmerized moviegoers for years -- from "Labyrinth" to "He's Just Not That Into You."

Now, presumably for her next role in 2010's "What's Wrong With Virginia," Connelly has lightened her hair up significantly to a pale blonde.

Those dark roots come back quickly, Jennifer -- trust us, we've been there! Luckily, we're certain the star has a stylist on call for touch-ups.
If you're a female, and you've ever watched "Gossip Girl," chances are you have -- if only for a moment -- envied Blake Lively's Hair. In fact, salons across the country are reporting that women are clamoring for the iconic cut.

For her role as NYC socialite Serena Van Der Woodsen, Lively has the long, luscious locks that only an Upper East Sider with mom's credit card could possibly maintain. Or, at least that's the idea behind the style.

While this latest must-have haircut is somewhat similar to Farrah Fawcett's hot style of the '70s and '80s, it bears no resemblance to the last hair craze in recent history: The Rachel.

Jennifer Aniston's famous "Friends" haircut was shoulder-length, heavily layered, and varying shades of light warm brown, while lively's look is all about the long, blonde, bombshell effect.

The look requires an overall golden blonde tone, with some lighter highlights for shine. The cut is fairly common -- long layers -- but what sets the look apart is all in the styling.

The on-set stylist, Jennifer Johnson, told the NY Times that she creates the loose, tousled look by letting Lively's hair dry in a chignon. This creates some shape and gives sexy volume when the bun is unraveled.

For those who don't have the time (or the naturally straight hair) that Lively and her character do, you can mimic the effect by using a large barrel curling iron on sections of hair, holding the iron vertically and curling away from the face to create loose, not stiff, curls.

Will it make everyone instantly look like a sexy young socialite? Nuri Yurt of NYC's Toka salon told the Times, "if anybody can handle it -- that's a question mark."

So as long as your expectations are reasonable, it's worth giving "The Serena" a try.

XOXO,

When we regular gals have a bad hair day, it's probably because we're either too lazy (read: broke) to hit the hair salon.

But when a supermodel like Kate Moss is flashing dark roots and a messy mane, as she was last night (above right), something more sinister must be at play.

Like the rumor that the usually well-coiffed catwalker has fallen out with her hair stylist buddy James Brown and is reportedly doing her own hair, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The paper is speculating that Brown's reality show, "James' Salon," has caused him and his star client to clash after Moss reportedly balked at having too-prominent of a role in the series, rather than a cameo.

"It has become 'The Kate Show,'" she reportedly sniped to pals, sources told the Daily Mail.

Brown also admitted to the paper on Sunday that he is hoping to focus more on cutting hair, and that he only "sometimes" tends to Moss' hair.

"She maintains her hair herself nowadays," he said.

In that case, Kate, we have a tip: It's called Nice 'n Easy!

Maybe Kate Moss has been too busy throwing model parties for eight-year-olds to tame her tresses?
Kate Moss' Dark Roots and Messy Hair.
Paris Hilton and the Celebrity Styler

Paris Hilton Is known for her famously blonde mane, whether it's short and sassy or long and, well, fake.

We asked the star which look she likes better, and to 'fess up about what type of extensions she uses.

"I love changing my hair all the time, but right now I'm really into the long blonde bombshell type of look, so I use my Dream Catchers hair extensions," she told StyleList.

Extensions aren't Hilton's only foray into the haircare business -- she's launching a line of hair tools this month through Sally Beauty Supply stores.

Her pet product, the Celebrity Styler, is an all-in-one straightening and curling iron, which combines glam features (like the pink and black color scheme) with technical ones (like ceramic tourmaline plates and digital controls).

We only had one question: do her famous friends and family members use it?

"Yes, my friends and sister have tried my hair products," Paris told us.

The star also revealed her personal hair maintenance regimen: "I usually have my hair trimmed and highlighted every few weeks to maintain it. Since I travel so much, I have a hair stylist who comes on the road with me. His name is Frederic and he calls me his Barbie Doll that he plays dress up with. He is the best!"

Even with superstar stylists like Frederic on call, Paris still admits to having the occasional hair flop. "Everyone has bad hair days once in awhile. It happens to us all," the star said.

Maria Shriver looked gorgeous at last night's Glamour Women of the Year Awards.

The 55-year-old beauty wore a black lace bustier, going strapless with ease thanks to her toned shoulders. (Watch out, Mrs. O!)

She accessorized with a long, beaded necklace, and finished the look with a sleek blowout to frame her face.

Shriver's hair color is youthful and flattering -- a soft medium brown (not too warm, not too ash) works for multiple skin tones, and never looks harsh.

Her makeup, a mix of nudes and browns, is a great look for anyone who wants to shave off a few years. Shriver defines her eyes and keeps the rest of her face subtle and glowing with peachy brush and neutral lipstick, which helps the effect appear young instead of overdone.

We love it!
Madonna's son David Banda may have the designer shades and chic little-man bag, but Cruz Beckham -- son of David and Victoria Beckham -- has got the toddler trendsetter game locked down.

The precocious (and precious) four-year-old tyke proved he's a chip off the old <strike>hawk</strike> block by rocking a mini-me Mohawk just like papa at yesterday's LA Galaxy game, plus a stylin' white tee worn under a black blazer.

The kid looks like he's headed to hot spot Mr. Chow, not Mommy & Me!

Older brother Romeo, meanwhile, went the classic and conservative route in a traditional suit. It's cute, but it's going to take more than a tie to steal the spotlight from the world's youngest heartthrob.

Banda, Kingston, it's your move.

Now excuse us while we inform our boyfriends that they've been sartorially "served" by a four-year-old.
Shakira hit the stage at last night's MTV Europe Music Awards ready to rock out.

How do we know?

She wore dreadlocks.

The fiesty she-wolf posed on the red carpet with her hair slicked back into a super-sleek, super-long ponytail.

But when it came time for her to perform, Shakira had something else in store for her fans.

The pop star emerged in a jeweled, cutout mini dress that reminded us of a funky Cleopatra throwback. She swapped her ponytail for a half-back hairstyle that had sections twisted into dreads.

The look gave Shakira an edgy, don't-mess-with-me vibe on stage.

The star's lengthy 'locks dropped to hip level -- perhaps a subtle reminder that those famous hips do not, in fact, lie?
Shakira Rocks Dreadlocks at MTV Europe Awards originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 11:50:00 EST.

Ballerina buns are one of Spring's biggest hair trends.

Now, these aren't the super slicked, ear-pulling buns you paired with white tights and pliés in your childhood ballet class. The buns we saw on the spring runways were very "I don't care," worn, we imagine, by a slacker ballerina who's late to practice because her motorcycle broke down.

They're perfectly imperfect, full of "wispy imperfections" as lead hairstylist Anthony Barrow told us backstage at Charlotte Ronson.

Already glimpsed on New York City's downtown set, (we were admiring a model type's wickedly wound creation in a NoLIta bar over the weekend), Cameron Diaz is the first celebrity to wear the trend on the red carpet.

She wore the hair style last night to the premiere of 'The Box' in New York City, with face-framing wisps of hair and a golden statement necklace. Which works, because the great thing about subversive ballerina buns is that there are no rules. It was seen on runways as different as Charlotte Ronson, Lanvin and Ruffian, and paired with fashions that ran the gamut from frilly frocks to glamorous suits.

So invest in some bobby pins and practice your rusty bun winding techniques. You're a ballerina, and you're bad to the bone.
Cameron Diaz Wears a Ballerina Bun originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 17:15:00 EST. Michelle Obama was quite busy yesterday entertaining guests at the White House for a day of functions, including the Coming Up Taller Awards and a classical music concert. And for both events, the First Lady wore her shoulder-skimming locks in a sleek updo (pictured above).

While we've previously spotted Mrs. O's hair styled in a "tuck up," this polished, yet feminine look is reminiscent of First Ladies of years past. Has Michelle traded in her modern flair for something more classic? What do you think of Michelle's latest 'do? Leave a comment below.
