We are a lash obsessed nation: Latisse, eyelash extensions, and of course mascara, mascara, mascara.

What woman isn't forever pining for long, thick lashes?

For real drama the only option has been falsies because mascara alone could only do so much -- until now, says Bobbi Brown.

The makeup artist's new Extreme Party Mascara features exclusive technology that allows you to layer and build coats of mascara for added oomph.

But the real point of difference is this: Whether you lacquer on extra layers right away or hours later, the mascara goes on perfectly smooth. This is thanks to special reactivation technology that keeps the formula flexible between coats - so it's as if each new coat is being applied to bare lashes.

In other words, no more crusty messes when you try to add mascara at the end of the day.

We'll call it "Born Again" lashes. Can we get a hallelujah?
Bobbi Brown's New Mascara Breakthrough originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 12:50:00 EST. Bliss has become a worldwide phenomenon thanks in part to original founder Marcia Kilgore's unique medley of wit and luxury.

Kilgore sold Bliss to LVMH in 1999 for a reported $30 million and Starwood bought it from the luxury conglomerate in 2004 for a reported $25 million.
According to WWD, Bliss' annual sales are approximately $85 million.

Steiner's president and CEO Leonard Fluxman talked about "the opportunity to introduce Bliss products and broaden the appeal of the brand through our distribution channels," with Wall Street analysts via phone, reported the source.
Model Agyness Deyn gave Lady Gaga competition in the wacky department at last night's ACE Awards.

The raven-haired British beauty wore a pair of feathered false lashes on her lower lash lines, to create an effect that could only be described as "sad clown."

Well, sad, goth, clown.

While the creativity was all Deyn's doing, she may have been inspired by Lady Gaga's current influence on makeup. "Lady Gaga is known for her 'sad' makeup," MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Romero Jennings told us at a recent photo shoot. "The shapes always go downwards."

A few companies sell flutterly lashes like these -- Sephora Black Feather False Eye Lashes, $15; Make Up For Ever Strip Lashes in 116 Jane, $15 -- which can be used on the upper or lower lash lines for different effects.

To recreate Deyn's look, first trim the lashes to fit the lower lash area before gluing them on - this easy tweak will make the application process much easier.

And for the full effect, we suggest blowing it out with a trendy pair of fangs.
Agyness Deyn Does 'Sad Clown' in Feathered False Eye Lashes originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 13:30:00 EST. One hundred percent of proceeds are slated for the MAC AIDS Fund.

Celebrities in Dark Lipstick

A deep, dark, Goth-inspired lip is one of the season's boldest trends. And while black was the shade puckering down the runways, deep plum and bold crimson are the colors blowing kisses along the red carpet. From Salma Hayek to Jessica Alba, Hollywood has fully embraced their version of the trend. Check out which stars have gone to the dark side-good and bad.

Getty Images

Application is key when wearing dark lips. Rhianna's look is a little messy here - if you look closely, the lipstick jumps outside of her lip line at the edges.

Tip: Before applying a bold lip color, line lips with a neutral liner. It makes the application more precise and when the color wears off, it leaves you with a natural-looking lip line as opposed to an obvious ring around the lip.

Getty Images

The ultimate beauty risk taker, Taylor Momson will try anything, including a dark lip. At a magazine party in New York City, her bold lips were a little too severe for her porcelain skin tone, but her rock star vibe managed to make it wearable.

Getty Images

Catherine Zeta Jones' over the top lashes and loud, berry-red pout looked more clown-like than classy. While her dark lips are undoubtedly pretty, they don't work with the fan-like fringe.

Tip: When wearing a dark lip, keep the rest of your makeup to a minimum. You only want to play up one feature at a time.

Getty Images

Dark lips are sexy, which explains why Megan Fox pulls them off flawlessly. A modern-day femme fatale, her raven locks and black frock paired perfectly with her sultry pout.

Getty Images

Brilliant actresses don't always make wise lipstick decisions. While Anne Hathaway normally wears a bold lip beautifully, at the Get Smart premiere her glamorous hair and makeup called for a softer lip.

Tip: When wearing a dark lip, keep your hair and the rest of your makeup simple. The lip makes enough of a statement.

Getty Images

Dark lipstick can be jarring on fair skin, but not on Heather Graham, who chose the right shade. The deep, brick red color complemented her golden undertones.

Tip: Choosing the right shade is critical. As a rule of thumb: deep plum and rich wine shades complement dark skin tones, while burgundy and warm crimson colors wear well on medium to fair skin.

Getty Images

This songstress is completely out of tune. Her bold lips clash with her bleach blonde locks and pale skin, creating a look that is anything but harmonious.

Getty Images

At a cocktail party in Italy, Jessica Alba looked stunning with burgundy lips.

Getty Images

Audrina Patridge is always on the pulse of the trends. The Hills stunner sported dark raspberry lips (this fall's most notable beauty look) to the Surfrider Foundation's 25th anniversary gala in Los Angeles.

Blackface is making headlines for the third time in as many weeks.

The upcoming issue (#62) of V Magazine will feature model Sasha Pivovarova in dark body and face makeup, in an amorous embrace with relatively pale model Heidi Mount.

The spread is accompanied by the quote, "Black is the new black," from James Kaliardos, Creative Director, L'Oreal Paris International, who created the look as part of the feature "Beauty 2010" for which V asked the world's leading creative directors, makeup artists and hairstylists to define what's beautiful for the new decade.

"2010 sounds like the future, and this is what it will look like," touts the magazine.

This is hot on the heels of last week's "America's Next Top Model" episode which featured the contestants painted in varying degrees of dark makeup to depict bi-racial women, and last month's critically debated issue of model Lara Stone in blackface for the October issue of French Vogue.

Last week, we polled StyleList readers on how they felt about the use of blackface on "America's Next Top Model," and out of nearly 21,000 readers, 53% thought the photos were a beautiful celebration of bi-racial women and only 11% found it offensive.

We're interested to see if readers feel the same way about this instance in V, or if it brings up parallel concerns with French Vogue's use of blackface: Why didn't the magazine use a darker-skinned model instead of painting a white model black?
As a mother of two who is far from a sample size and living in a non-fashion capitol, many trends touted by the Vogues, Glamours and W's of the world -- not to mention seen on designer runways -- might not actually be meant for me. It's time to put them to the test.

The Trend: Black Lipstick

Black lipstick is for Goth chicks, KISS tribute bands and Lily Munster right?

Well, apparently, it's now for fashion trendsetters, too. Rachel Roy, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen are among the designers who chose to send models with black pouts down their runways.

Cosmetic companies are joining the dark side, too. MAC's Style Black collection includes black lipstick and gloss, Chanel's Noir Obscurs features lipsticks in "eggplant black," "deep black red" and "brown black," Lancome's Piha Black gloss is launching soon and Urban Decay's Oil Slick lipstick is glossy black with sparkles.

Yep, fall's fashion roster is suiting up in black. But is it possible for black lips to score points, or will you just end up sidelined, looking like a "True Blood" extra?

What I Wore: MAC's Black Knight lipstick, a "creamy true black," $14 at maccosmetics.com.

I searched my neighborhood Rite Aid, Sally Beauty Supply and Ulta for a cheaper black lipstick brand, but came up empty.

Red lips may be an "it" makeup look for fall but if you're not into a bold pout, don't fret -- a well executed smoky eye is always in style.

I stopped by the gorgeous new Chanel Makeup Studio in Bloomindale's 59th street in NYC to get professional smoky eye instructions from one of Chanel's top celebrity makeup artists, Kate Lee. She's wielded her skills on celebs such as Diane Kruger, Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Anne Hathaway, just to name a few.

Here is Kate's smoky eye how-to:

Use a black kohl eyeliner to line the inner rims of the eyes, top and bottom. A little liner will seep out and Kate says to blend the smudges around the eye so it looks sexy and disheveled.

Line the upper lash line with the pencil and go over it with dark, matte shadow.

So you may not bleed black.

But goth - or grown up goth - is a fall trend you want to dabble in.

The good news is that goth has grown up: Black nail polish, sun-deprived skin and blood-red lipstick are no longer reserved for moody teenagers and Hot Topic employees.

As we've seen on runways, celebrities and even (shock!) conservative politicians, the dark side of beauty is out in full force.

We chatted with celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles about how you can go goth without looking like Marilyn Manson gave you a makeover.

When it comes to dark makeup for the eyes, lips and nails, Stiles says, "You still have to feel pretty or else it will just be scary."

Here's how to do just that!

As we've seen on runways, celebrities and even (shock!) conservative politicians, the dark side of beauty is out in full force.

We chatted with celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles [link: www.fionastiles.com] about how you can go goth without looking like Marilyn Manson gave you a makeover. When it comes to dark makeup for the eyes, lips and nails, Stiles says, "You still have to feel pretty or else it will just be scary." Here's how to do just that!

Rob Loud, Getty Images

Black-rimmed eyes are a goth staple (as are velvet capes, but we won't go there), and look just as hot with jeans and a t-shirt as they do with a cocktail dress. Just skip the freaky white-iris contact lenses and you're good to go.

When it comes to black and charcoal, "skip the eyeliner and keep it as a wash of powder shadow," explains Stiles. "Then it won't be so dense and heavy." She says to stick to shadows with a slight shimmer because matte looks too ghoulish. And if this is a look you want to frequent? "Have your colorist lighten your eyebrows just a tiny bit, especially if your brows are darker than your hair. It makes it all look less theatrical. That's how Jennifer Lopez can wear strong eye makeup -- if she didn't lighten her brows it would look crazy."

Try the trend:
Becca Eye Colour in Velvet, $24

Lancome Virtuose Mascara, $24.50

Courtesy of Becca, Lancome

An alternative to black eye shadow is a palette of somber but sexy forest green, mahogany and plum. Hey, if the Corpse Bride can pull off deep purple eye shadow, why can't you?

Fiona suggests using a small, domed eye shadow brush to softly blend color on the top lid and underneath the eye, "but you don't have to do the same color on top and bottom," she explains. Two of her favorite goth-nouveau color combos are eggplant/dark taupe and dark gray/light gray, keeping the darker color on top.

Try the trend:
Chanel Les Folies Noires, $60

Coutesy of Chanel

With lips it's a simple matter of choice. There's dark, film noir-esque burgundy, overripe berry a la the Twilight gang, ghostly purple or sheer, inky black.

Stiles says that if you're doing one of the bold eye looks you should stick with lighter, sheer lipsticks and glosses. Sheer berry is universally flattering, and she likes cool dark purple gloss. "It's a 'cold' color but still incredibly flattering. And it looks great on brunettes." Stiles warns that dark lipstick can be aging, "so find a nice maroon or purple and blot it down so it looks more like a stain." (Blood stained, perhaps?) You can also use a sheer black gloss over lipstick you already have to give it a gothic edge - or dab on bare lips if you're feeling bold.

Try the trend:
Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick, $14

When you're far too melancholy to face the outside world, your skin takes on a lovely shade of alabaster - not to mention all the wrinkles and sun damage you're preventing by forgoing the beach for an afternoon inside listening to Joy Division.

As tempting as it may be to let your moody eyes and lips do the emoting, Stiles says "don't skip blush, just make it subtle. The just-eye-and-lip look works for runway, but not real people." Pale skin channels a delicate Edwardian aristocrat but "you still want some life to it." Stick to blushes that add just a tiny bit of warmth without being too rosy or shimmery. "And if you are on the pale side," continues Stiles, "give skin some luminosity with a loose translucent powder. Nothing too shiny."

Try the trend:
Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, $22

Courtesy of Philosophy, Laura Mercier

Forget the sun-kissed highlights - Goth hair is dark and sultry. Bonus points if you create matte volume with powder like the Victorians (and Angelina circa 2000) used to do. But not too much or it will look costume-y.

Unless it's your natural color, super dark hair is a tough one to pull off. "If the color is too dark next to your skin it can wash you out, bringing focus to wrinkles or dark circles around the eyes," says Bumble and Bumble colorist Mercedes Mueller. Stick to warmer shades of auburn and chocolate if that's what suits your skin, but ask your colorist to keep it one rich allover hue.

Remember when Angelina dressed like a witch and made out with her brother? And then she carried around a vial of Billy Bob Thornton's blood? We do!

This is an extreme nod to goth and would be a big, giant DON'T for pretty much anyone besides Angelina. Big black hair, winged eyeliner and her trademark matte lips -- a look not for the faint of heart.

David McNew, Getty Images

Hey look! It's Wednesday Addams! Christina Ricci was a poster child for angsty adolescence, and although we love her grown up glam look, part of us will always identify with her rebellious black hair, shun-the-sun pale skin and big, mournful gaze.

Dave Hogan, Getty Images

One of her first movie roles was in "Practical Magic," she dated Marilyn Manson and now plays the Queen of the Vampires on "True Blood." Goth overload!

Since this picture was taken Ms. Wood has colored her hair to a softer, less morbid shade: copper red. But we love this example of how dark hair and makeup can work on the red carpet. Notice her brows are lighter than her hair? Makes the entire look seem less harsh.

Scott Wintrow, Getty Images

It's so rare to see a celebrity take a risk with her makeup on the red carpet - especially when it's a tough shade to pull off like blackberry.

Rachel Weisz makes it work by pairing rich lipstick with clean skin. Feathery eyelashes and a pretty pink frock help make the overall look bold but not too bold.

I'm about to blow the lid on an entire industry - celebrity swag.

You know the "stars have it so good" columns in all the weeklies - who has what, where they're going, etc?

And you know those "candid" shots of - I don't know - say Lindsay Lohan, walking down the street, holding - prominently, I may add - nicotine gum to stop smoking?

Well, they're not always accidents: Brands are paying for this placement.

As every brand knows, being able to say a celebrity has or uses your product is the best implicit endorsement there is. Plus, it's a quick means to instant press. Hence, celebrity gifting. There are a few ways to get your products in the right hands.

1. Get lucky, bump into someone, have your product on you, hand it over, and try to sneak a photo of them holding it. One of my summer interns used to have celeb sightings daily. A-list ones. I gave her a bag of products to pass on to anyone she saw. She got shewed away by Gwen Stefani's nanny once in Gramercy Park. Oh well. It made for an excellent Facebook update!

2. Know someone who knows someone - a friend of a friend. That is how I got to the lovely Nicky Hilton, FYI, though I have met her many times in the past and think she is an absolute doll. Saying her name got Huge Lips Skinny Hips in Life & Style!
Continue reading Celebrity Swag: How to Get Stars to Use Your Products - Beauty BLab

Celebrity Swag: How to Get Stars to Use Your Products - Beauty BLab originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 09:00:00 EST. Continuing the resurgence of a makeup practice long considered taboo, "America's Next Top Model" featured a number of models painted with dark makeup to resemble bi-racial women.

On the episode, which aired tonight (Oct. 28), host Tyra Banks said the goal was to create an editorial celebration of the "Hapa" (that's Hawaiian for mixed-race) children of immigrants who relocated to Hawaii to work as sugar cane farmers in the mid-19th century. Barack Obama is the most famous Hapa.

Banks tasked models with interpreting exotic racial combinations like "Russian-Moroccan," "Native American-East Indian," and "Botswanan-Polynesian," photographing them herself in the green reeds of a sugar plantation on the island of Maui.
The models -- Jennifer An, Nicole Fox, Laura Kirkpatrick, Sundai Love, Brittany Markert and Erin Wagner -- were styled in clothing stereotypical to the ethnicities they were asked to portray. For example, Markert, who was "Native American-East Indian," was dressed in a feathered headdress and a sari. And Love, as a "Russian-Morrocan" was styled with Russian Ushanka hat and a large walking stick.

Then, the models were sent to makeup, where each was painted with varying degrees of dark body makeup to match the perceived skin tone of the corresponding race they were conveying.

This is the second time models have been shown in dark makeup in recent weeks.
Continue reading Blackface on 'America's Next Top Model'

Blackface on 'America's Next Top Model' originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 01:15:00 EST.
First, Jennings turned the skin a ghoulish shade of gray. He used MAC Chromacake, mixing together the white and black shades to make gray. To do this at home, Jennings suggests scraping black eye shadow into a light foundation. mixing well, and blending it across the face.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Jennings blacked out the brows with carbon gray Eye Shadow in Print. He then highlighted beneath the brow with Eye Shadow in Nylon. "This shade will camouflage any growth under the brow," said Jennings. "It's a great substitute for tweezing."

To take the lashes up a notch on the fab-o-meter, Jennings used black paper to extend the lashes at the outer corner. He cut black carbon paper into really thin strips, curled them with his fingers, and applied them with tweezers and lash glue.

"I used black carbon paper, but you could use something metallic or sparkly," explained Jennings. "You can take the look to whatever level you desire."

For most New Yorkers, going to Duane Reade is all about stocking up on toilet paper and toothpaste and then waiting an hour to check out--not exactly a luxury shopping destination.

But all that is about to change.

Today marks the opening of the New York City drugstore chain's 14,000 square foot, two-story stab-at-prestige beauty retailing in Herald's Square, reports WWD.

The new beauty department, called Look Boutique, boasts 5,400 square feet of upscale brands, including Too Faced, Lierac, Pop Beauty, and La Roche-Posay.

The new Duane Reade is no slouch in the fragrance department either. The store now stocks Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Lovers, Juicy Couture, Burberry, and a Demeter Fragrance Library, reports the paper. Other beauty bells and whistles include a Ramy brow-shaping station, where for $30 you can get your brows done by the makeup artist staff, and a physician-manned health clinic.

According to the source, the chain will open 30 more new or renovated stores next year, half of which will contain the Look Boutique. Duane Reade's chief merchandising manager Joe Magnacca told WWD: "It's a big step up for drugstore beauty."

Another bonus, the new Herald Square Duane Reade is open 24 hours should you have a 3am lip gloss craving.
Duane Reade Beauty - The New York City Drugstore Gets a Makeover originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 17:30:00 EST. Burberry has already successfully dipped its toe in the beauty industry with a dozen or so signature fragrances, but now the purveyors of plaid are diving head first into beauty with their first color cosmetics line, set to debut in July of 2010, as reported by WWD.

Burberry is planning an ambitious launch of about 100 products for eyes, lips and skin. Chairman and managing director of Inter Parfums SA, which has the Burberry beauty license, told the paper that the new collection "gives another dimension to the brand."

Indeed it does, but other design houses have dabbled in cosmetics and the results have been mixed.

For every designer makeup success story (Giorgio Armani, Rock & Republic) there are more than a few failures (Versace, Calvin Klein, many times). The jury's still out on whether or not the new-ish Dolce & Gabbana and CK Calvin Klein (the latest Klein incarnation) makeup lines are going to go the distance.

Burberry does have one advantage, though. Die-hard fans will buy anything with the iconic plaid, and we predict a signature patterned lipstick tube would be a smash hit.
Burberry to Launch Color Cosmetics Line originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 17:15:00 EST.
Whether it's totally fabulous or borderline insane, her fashion-forward sense of style is artistic, gutsy, and really fun to write about. Which is why we think Lady Gaga is one of 2009's best Halloween costumes (edging slightly ahead of Balloon Boy, in our book).

In fact, one StyleList staffer and a group of her friends are all dressing as Lady Gaga - each one in a different epochal costume she wore in the past year.

So we begged Romero Jennings, the MAC senior artist responsible for many of the amazingly technical looks we see backstage at fashion week, to come to our offices to transform our intern, Lindsey, into Lady Gaga

This Halloween, put on your best "Poker Face," with our guide looking as glamorous as Lady Gaga. MAC senior artist Romero Jennings takes us through the steps to create the look. Fourteen easy steps, and you'll be ready for the "Paparazzi!"

- By Laura Kenney

Elizabeth Lippmann

This look features a white card over one eye, and half-brows over the other, so the first step is to make the brows disappear.

First paint each brow with MAC Duo Lash Glue, and then dust your pressed powder or powder foundation on top. The powder will stick to the glue and help your brows match your skin tone.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Use a white eye pencil to stencil the shape for the eye card and lips before applying the rest of your makeup.

"Lady Gaga's lips are stylized, said Jennings. "The shape is very Lucielle Balll meets Judy Jetson - old school but high tech at same time.

To get the look, draw short, cartoonish lips that don't extend all the way to your lips' natural corners - a rounded heart shape on top, and a rounded half circle on bottom lips.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Fill in the lips with Use MAC Lips Pencil in Red to draw a Blank out the rest of the lips with foundation.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Then fill in the stenciled white lines with MAC Pure White Chromocake, painting the color on the eye lids and lashes, and dusting everything with Prep and Prime Loose Powder on top. "The thing that will make this stay put is the powder," says Jennings. "That just seals everything."

Elizabeth Lippmann

"I'm edging this with Cork Eye Shadow, so the white really stands out," said Jennings. Then, he use MAC Sculpting Powder to contour around the white edges to create dimension.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Define half of the brow, using MAC Sculpting Powder to contour from the inner crease and arching up and over. Then, to visually erase the rest of your brow, Jennings has a cool tip: "When you want to visually erase something for the camera, use a shiny shadow on the area. Then when you take a picture using flash, all you see is the shine." He used this trick on the outer half of the brow, layering the area with Eye Shadow in Nylon, a shimmery, buttery white.

Elizabeth Lippmann

"Lady Gage is known for her 'sad' makeup," said Jennings. "The shapes always go downwards." He used Black Track Fluid Line Gel Liner on the lid (technically, it's a liner but works great as shadow base for smoking up the eye), and smudged out the color to create a triangular shape and lined under the eyes with it.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Using MAC Brush in 208, Jennings lined beneath the bottom lid with Black Track Fluid Line Gel Liner, and worked the upper lid with Fluffier Brush 224 to create well blended, airbrushed look. He brightened the inner corners of the eye with MAC White Pigment, a super shimmery powder that will give a wet look when photographed.

Elizabeth Lippmann

Jennings opted for MAC Lashes #44. "They're new lashes that are very long and fluttery," he said. "And for extra impact I'm going to layer a few pairs together before we put them on."

It's not as complicated as it sounds: Jennings simply dabbed a tiny bit of lash glue on the bottom of each lash strip, and tripled up the lashes to tripled them up before applying them.

Jennings the used MAC Lashes in #35 on the bottom. "The have spaces between the lashes for a clumpy, Twiggy-like effect," he says. Another tip: Always use mascara on top of the false lashes. "It fuses your lashes to the fake ones," says Jennings.
