The Spring 2010 runways were filled with the usual strand suspects: chignons, ponytails, afros, and braids.

But these classic styles were given a modern spin thanks to collaboration between the designers and hairstylists -- and the results have the beauty world talking about the emergence of a "new hair attitude."

Yesterday, a handful of editors gathered to hear hair maestro Guido Palau, the creative consultant for Redken, recap the major runway tress trends.

"For a long time we've seen pretty hair but now it's a bit more adventurous," said Palau.

From the touseld plaits at Alexander Wang to the extreme buns at Lanvin to the teased pigtails at Prada, spring hair is all about having fun and taking risks. But, Palau ensures us, the risks are refreshingly reasonable, and it's safe to try versions of these hair styles at home.

"Women sort of look at these styles on these young girls on the runway and think they can't pull it off - we've got to get them to try it out," he said. "It can be invigorating or confidence giving to change your hair.

"The perfection is the imperfection of these 'dos."

Palau breaks the season down into four style categories that he urges "real women" to embrace: Urban Romance (gritty and slightly disheveled); Past Perfect (playful and textured); Slick Move (wet and polished) and Extreme Measures (over-the-top).

But he admits that the standout trend for spring was this concept of an urban romance. "It's not romantic hair in the usual sense, not down and free flowing - it's more for the city woman," said Palau. "Shapes have an edge, and it's worn up in a ponytail or a knot."

For Bottega Veneta's Spring 2010 runway show, Guido created a messy ballerina bun (pictured right). The wispy strands and headband adds a youthful touch without coming across as too childlike.

To recreate this hairstyle, apply Redken Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder to damp strands and air-dry. Pull hair up into a ponytail and secure into tiny knots with bobby pins. Finish with a chic bow or band.

And viola, you're rocking spring's hottest hair trend.

We're the first to admit that we have an irrational love for Alexa Chung.

Ever since we first blogged about her last April, she's been wowing us with her wily, style-y ways.

But it's beauty moments like this that make us realize we're not just a guest on Stalk Talk -- and Chung really does deserve our reverence.

You see, last night (Nov 23rd) the MTV host attended the dressy 37th International Emmy Awards Gala wearing a messy updo featuring undone face-framing side braids.

We love this because the side-braided 'do is usually reserved for long-haired ladies (think Jennifer Aniston's Oscar hair style). But Chung proves us wrong, showing that the style looks just as good on sorter-length locks (Chung's end just below her ears, we, uh, think.)

And as opposed to braids being the ultimate girlie hair style (again, think Aniston), here, Chung makes them edgy and cool.

Perhaps the braid is on its way back to trend status -- replacing the reigning cooler-than-though 'do, the downtown ballerina bun. Only time, and Chung, will tell.

Shakira is famed for her wildly curly locks.

Which is why we paid extra attention to the lady like 'do the singer sported at the AMA's - they were so totally different from her usual look. We love it when stars step out of their comfort zones!

This is a perfect, easy hair style for those holiday parties, since it's so flattering: "Brushing hair directly back off the face complements everyone's face shape," says hairstylist Danielle Caputo.

But the key to the look is this: "When you finish the ponytail, it looks more polished to cover the elastic with your own hair," she says.

Take it from us, the hair gurus agree on this detail: Just last week celebrity hairstylist and salon owner Ted Gibson told us "Nothing is worse than a visible elastic in a ponytail. Nothing." We gulped as we covertly turned our head to hide our own very visible pony tail holder.

The star's normally curly locks were smooth and straight, with a sophisticated side part.

So how did Kidman tame her famous coils?

Celebrity hairstylist Danielle Caputo recommends this tip to guarantee super straight strands: "Mix a little bit of grooming cream with a frizz serum to infuse hair with moisture and act as a barrier against humidity."

It's also all about the brush. "One of the biggest obstacles to a sleek blow out is using the wrong brush," says Caputo. Put down those vent brushes and round brushes - a flat paddle brush with natural bristles will give the sleekest results. Natural bristles grab and hold on to hair best, while the shape will leave hair flat and straight (as opposed to the voluminous straight look a round brush will deliver).

We thought Ashley Greene was the most gorgeous gal on the Twilight red carpet last night.

And no surprise that it was celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson who created the gorgeous updo (who, shhh, happens to be at StyleList HQ today filming some top secret videos with us - but more on that later).

Here's Gibson's lowdown on Ashley's gorgeous look.

STYLELIST: What are your tips for creating Ashley's look?

Ted Gibson: "Start off with a really good blow dry using Build It blow drying spray at the root to create ultimate volume. Apply Hairsheet styling on the rest of the hair then blowdry. To create that sexy texture, curl strands with a large barrel curling iron set on medium heat. Place hair into ponytail and finish with Tame it Shine Lotion for added texture and lightweight shine."

STYLELIST: How do you work with her extensions?

Ted Gibson: "Clip ins are the best. It is a piece that gives hair fullness and length for that perfect ponytail that every girl dreams about."

STYLELIST: How do you keep Ashley's hair healthy?

Ted Gibson: Goodnite replenishing hair repair serum is a perfect way to keep hair in good condition and scalps in balance

STYLELIST: What's your preparation like on a day like this, and how long does it take to do Ashley's hair?

Ted Gibson: "It takes over an hour to create sexy, voluminous hair."

Beachy waves aren't just for the summer time. And at last night's GQ "Men of the Year" Party, Amanda Seyfried showed that this classic 'do works in fall, too.

The "Mama Mia!" star channeled the '60s with her wavy strands, pulling back pieces at the crown to show off her trademark fresh face.

To mimic Seyfried's perfect beachy look, celebrity stylist Danielle Caputo suggests curling hair away from the face. "It creates a windswept effect and helps keep it from falling forward," she said. "Use a salt-water spray (which helps create that piece-y texture) at the roots and then all over to add texture."

The angels have descended in Manhattan. Victoria's Secret Angels, of course.

Supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr, Selita Ebanks, Marisa Miller and a bevy of other beauties are back in New York City for "the sexiest show on earth."

And StyleList got a sneak peek as the long-legged ladies glammed up before taking flight on the catwalk. Here are the deets:

THE SCOOP: Victoria's Secret embodies sexy and there is nothing sexier than a confident woman wearing lingerie. So, for the fashion show's return to The Big Apple, the beauty professionals created looks that were sensual, yet natural.

Makeup artist Tom Pecheux was inspired by the models. "With a lot of new girls on the runway this season, I wanted to make it fresh," he said. "Nothing dramatic...extremely sexy and beautiful. When a lot of the body is showing, you don't want the face to appear made up."

Pecheux applied pink shimmer all over the face and added individual lashes to accentuate the smoky eye.

Hairstylist Laurent Philippon perfected loose waves for a style "that you would want to touch." Armed with hairspray, a curling iron and hair extensions, he added a touch of reality to this VS fantasy.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: All makeup and hair by Victoria's Secret. Start with a clear and smooth face. Generously dust shimmer on eyelids, temples, cheeks and lips. Apply false eyelashes and layer on mascara. Smooth on gray eyeshadow along the eyebrow. Finish the look by coloring in pout with a peachy Lip Lacquer and pink Perfect Lipstick.

GET THE LOOK - HAIR: To recreate loose, sexy waves, add extensions for length and apply So Sexy Volumizing Mousse and Supersmooth Straightening Balm. Curl hair in alternate directions and softly comb through using a 1 inch comb. Finish with Natural Hold Hairspray.

Celebrity hair stylist Tabatha Coffey is known for bringing shear terror to the salons she makes over on her Bravo reality series, "Tabatha's Salon Takeover."

Tonight, Coffey fans will see her kinder, gentler side (albeit still clad from neck-to-toe in menacing black) when she brings her talents to NBC's "The Biggest Loser," for its popular makeover episode. She reprises the role she took on last season alongside "Project Runway's" Tim Gunn.

Together they help this season's finalists cultivate new looks to complement their slimmer bodies. Gunn will be choosing new clothing, while Coffey will produce new cuts and color for the "Losers" -- and stick around to groom a few of the grizzly guys.

After they have worked their magic, contestants will unveil the new looks to family and friends flown in for the occasion in a classic television "ta-da" moment.

Coffey told StyleList helping "The Biggest Loser" contestants look great was much more fun than making incompetent salon owners cry.

"My favorite thing to do is to create styles that are transformational," she admits. So we can expect the trimmer contestants to have some great hairstyles!

StyleList caught up with Coffey before she began a day at her New Jersey salon, Industrie Hair Gurus, where she still sees clients when she's not busy with her television projects.

StyleList: Experts always say that it's not a good idea to change your look after a major life event; for example a breakup or significant loss. The people you worked with on "The Biggest Loser" are going through really dramatic changes. Was it a good idea to cut their hair?
Tabatha Coffey: Absolutely. You have to approach this kind of thing very carefully. It's a life changing thing to lose all that weight. Then you get out the scissors and say, "Now, I'm going to cut your hair." [Laughs.] It's not always going to go over very well. But I have to say, you are dealing with people, in this case, who are in a lot happier place than if they got divorced or lost their job. I don't think you should cut your hair when you are going through something bad. In this case, they were happy. So it was a little easier to convince them to let me try something new... And a lot more gratifying for me.

SL: I noticed a lot of the female contestants have long, heavy hair and it reminded me of the way some people hide behind baggy clothes to conceal their weight. Were they guilty of hiding behind their hair?
TC: You know one thing I've heard from them was, "I was a fat girl, but I had pretty hair." I did need to explain to them you don't need to hide behind that hair anymore because you are not that girl anymore and you don't have that body anymore. They were going through a very transformational experience and part of it involves looking at yourself in a new way and seeing yourself as the person you have become, not the person you used to be. Their hair needed to transform as well.

SL: Is there a hair style that is an absolute "don't" for a larger woman?
TC: Obviously using your hair to hide and wearing a lot of hair in front of your face can make you look larger, even though a lot of women think the more that's in their face, the thinner they seem. I find the opposite is usually true. Another thing that is significant is where you hair hits along the jawline. It can either thin out your face or make it appear larger. That can be a very individual thing, which is why consulting with the client is so important. I think bangs and layering around the face can make a huge difference, by slimming and showing more structure.

Ballerina buns are one of Spring's biggest hair trends.

Now, these aren't the super slicked, ear-pulling buns you paired with white tights and pliés in your childhood ballet class. The buns we saw on the spring runways were very "I don't care," worn, we imagine, by a slacker ballerina who's late to practice because her motorcycle broke down.

They're perfectly imperfect, full of "wispy imperfections" as lead hairstylist Anthony Barrow told us backstage at Charlotte Ronson.

Already glimpsed on New York City's downtown set, (we were admiring a model type's wickedly wound creation in a NoLIta bar over the weekend), Cameron Diaz is the first celebrity to wear the trend on the red carpet.

She wore the hair style last night to the premiere of 'The Box' in New York City, with face-framing wisps of hair and a golden statement necklace. Which works, because the great thing about subversive ballerina buns is that there are no rules. It was seen on runways as different as Charlotte Ronson, Lanvin and Ruffian, and paired with fashions that ran the gamut from frilly frocks to glamorous suits.

So invest in some bobby pins and practice your rusty bun winding techniques. You're a ballerina, and you're bad to the bone.

Victoria Beckham hit the basketball court with her family this weekend sporting a cute new hair style.

Her hair was wavy and tousled -- a pretty, softer look that's in stark contrast to the geometric, stylized looks the star has become known for.

Posh has been quietly growing her hair out over the last few months -- trading 2008's short pixie for a longer, straight piece-y 'do earlier in the year, and now, waves.

Andre Agassi has a secret, and he's sharing: The tennis star has worn hair pieces for years! Not just subtle, low-key ones, but full-on '80s rockstar hair, mullets and more.

While it makes perfect sense -- in fact old photos scream fake hair when we look back -- we still felt a bit shocked by the now-bald star's admission, which he made via his upcoming book, "Open: An Autobiography."

According to an excerpt from the already-published German version obtained by the Daily Mail, during the 1990 French Open, Agassi prayed, "not for victory, but that my hairpiece would not fall off."

The bio also reveals scandalous details about Andre Agassi's family trouble, Crystal Meth use and numerous personal and professional struggles that were previously unknown.

At least the star has since sorted out his troubles (and hairstyle), found love and gained renewed respect on the court.

But really, we still can't get over the fact that he wore a wig!

Big and small, chiffon and taffeta, hair bows of all shapes and sizes made a recurring appearance on the Spring 2010 fashion runways.

Worn pinned along the sides of the hair like a middle school girl at Diane Von Furstenberg, wrapped around the head like a perfect present at Jason Wu and tied around a side ponytail at Milly, bows were a beauty headliner.

Not since the 1980s have hair bows been this stylish. And the trend seems to be channeling the decade, too. Over the top and oversized (think Madonna during her Like a Virgin days), as well as smaller ones worn two and three at a time (after all, it was the decade of excess) were the most notable styles parading down the runway.

Fabrics were equally extreme, with taffeta, chiffon and patent leather among the most decorative.

According to the pros, to look less Material Girl and more modern-day, size and placement matter. "The bows on the runway were mostly oversized and eccentric, but for the every day woman, bows that are smaller and understated are more realistic," notes celebrity stylist Michael Boychuck.

As for placement, adds Boychuck, gather a small section of the hair on one side and secure it with a single bow.

Mel B started out the night completely unrecognizable at a party in London to fête the launch of Glaceau Vitamin Water's XXX Triple Berry drink.

Maybe the former Spice Girl delved into her Halloween wig drawer a little early (or perhaps she borrowed a look from ATL Real Housewife Kim Zolciak's wig line), but turns out the light locks were just the beginning.

Donning a flapper-like beaded dress upon arrival, it seems the hard-bodied singer just couldn't decide what to wear. So, in true diva fashion, she underwent three wardrobe changes.

We've seen some scary Halloween costumes, but nothing sends chills up our spines quite like a bad haircut.

And when it comes to hair-raising hair, nobody does it better than mother of eight Kate Gosselin and her soccer-mom-bob-meets-Sonic-the-Hedgehog-meets-"Edward-Scissorhands" 'do.

Q: I want short hair, but I have a round face. Can I do it?

A: Of course! With the right shape, any hairstyle works on any face shape. For rounder faces with cropped hair, it's all about having longer bangs and shorter sides. Longer bangs will help narrow the face, and shorter sides will avoid any puffiness that could add the the perception of roundness. Also, make sure you keep your cut in shape with regular trims, since when the style starts growing out, you lose these slenderizing proportions.

Another day, another blonde celebrity.

This fall, brunettes have been biting the dust like mad, trading their darker locks for a "funner," lighter hue.

But Refinery 29 brings up a great point: If Kim Kardashian's hair counts as blonde, is Raquel Zimmerman's considered radioactive white? And what about Taylor Momsen, Ashley Tisdale, and LiLo? (if you can see past her alleged plastic surgery, that is)
